At Puccini’s time, transcriptions were very important and widespread, you just need to take a look at some of the scores published by Casa Ricordi to get an idea: in fact, on the back cover (of the enclosed booklet) you would be able to read an astonishing list of transcriptions, of fantasias and pot-pourris, either rewritten for piano solo, or for piano four-hands, or for various other ensembles. It was the result of a publishing policy that was in full swing at that time and that was addressed to a large public of amateurs, a public keen to learn the repertoire. These pieces were often played at home, in front of a very small and select audience; amateurs often wanted to perform operas that they had attended. But that is not all. These performances were also able to popularize compositions that would otherwise have been left unknown. In the sixteenth century the transcriptions for piano, especially for piano four hands, were an important vehicle for the diffusion of musical knowledge. On this CD the piano duo of Fabrizio Datteri and Nadia Lencioni performs compositions inspired by the famous works and the immortal melodies of Giacomo Puccini.

Josè Daniel Cirigliano, who is considered 'one of the best contemporary clarinettists' (Roberto Zecchini, in 'Musica', May 2015, no. 84), after the CD Opere Contemporanee per Clarinetto, offers us a new, stimulating excursus in the contemporary music for solo clarinet of the last few decades. Within this CD we see various twentieth-century composers challenging clarinettists and pushing the boundaries of the clarinet: from William Overton Smith, winner of the 'Grand Prix de Rome' in 1957, to the young Roman Alessandra Ravera, through figures by the great personality such as Giacinto Scelsi, or masters who left their mark like Bruno Bettinelli, or specialists of the clarinet technique like Antonio Fraioli and Giovanni Mattaliano.

The organist Pier Damiano Peretti - living in Vienna since 2009 as a teacher at the Universität (formerly Hochschule) für Musik und darstellende Kunst - on this CD is tackling the very difficult organ pages of the well-known composer from Puglia, Biagio Putignano. Peretti performs on the 1995 Mathis organ, located in the Scottekirche in Vienna, alongside soprano Marie-Antoinette Stabentheiner. So, it seemed therefore logical in the conception of this CD, to counterpoint the poetry of the 'new Middle Ages' (U. Eco) obbligato music by Biagio Putignano, with excerpts from the earliest surviving Italian keyboard music collection, the 1420 Faenza Codex: secular intabulations of great ingenuity. For the performance of these pieces, Peretti uses an organ from the Neapolitan School of the eighteenth century belonging to St. Ursula Kirche in Vienna.

Within this recording the reading of the 'Historia del Beato San Martino', a devotional text from the beginning of the sixteenth century is brought to light for the first time on CD. The music narrates in a fresh and popular language the events of San Martino of Tours, through a colourful account of his life, which plunges us into the typical mixed atmosphere of divine and profane of the end of Humanism and beginning of the Renaissance. The reciting voice of Roberto Cascio is flanked by the instrumental ensemble of the Cappella Musicale di San Giacomo Maggiore in Bologna. The choice of music was based on the particular period of Italian music prevalent at the end of the 1400s and the beginning of the 1500s, and, in particular, on the widespread devotional-laud genre and the use of spiritual camouflaging (in fact, the melodies derived from the secular repertoire, which, in turn and very often, came from the many French composers who, at that time, frequented the most important Italian courts).
