The Clientele return in September with Music for the Age of Miracles, their first release of new music since 2010’s Minotaur EP and their first album on Tapete Records. After The Clientele released Minotaur, Alasdair MacLean, singer and principal songwriter for the band, made two wonderful albums with Lupe Núñez-Fernández as Amor de Días, issued a Clientele best-of called Alone and Unreal, oversaw reissues of Suburban Light and Strange Geometry, and played shows solo or as part of Amor de Días or The Clientele. He and Lupe have also been raising a family, so the prospect of a new Clientele record seemed to be diminishing. It seems fitting, then, that a chance meeting with a ghost from the past/future is what led to Music for the Age of Miracles, the first album of new Clientele songs in seven years. MacLean and Anthony Harmer knew one another and played music together in the mid-1990s but had lost touch. “I had often wondered what had happened to Anthony since,” writes MacLean. “It turned out—he told me—he’d studied the Santoor, an Iranian version of the dulcimer, and over decades become a virtuoso, at least by my standards. He suggested we have a jam together. Ant and I now lived three streets away from each other, it turned out. He started to arrange my songs. He let me write and sing them, and he came up with ideas for how they should sound. This carried on until we had an album. I called up James and Mark and asked them if they wanted to make another Clientele record. They did, and this is it.” So, a new collaboration with an old acquaintance led to a new Clientele album. On Music for the Age of Miracles, Harmer joins the line-up of MacLean, James Hornsey (bass), and Mark Keen (drums, piano, percussion), contributing string and brass arrangements as well as guitars, vocals, keyboards, saz and, yes, Santoor. There’s something rapturous about the ways in which tracks on side one such as “Falling Asleep” (featuring the Santoor) and the exquisite “Everything You See Tonight Is Different From Itself” stretch out in choral harmony and rhythmic syncopation. Leon Beckenham’s trumpet solo on the latter is a highlight of the record, as is the way the words “ballerina, breathe” reappear at the three-minute mark. Similarly, Keen’s beautifully evocative interludes “Lyra in April,” “Lyra in October,” and “North Circular Days,” the last of these featuring a recording of the wind captured outside the late filmmaker Derek Jarman’s house in Dungeness on the Kent coast, mean this album sounds subtly but significantly different from previous ones. Birth, rebirth, the ghost in the trees, something on the edge of sight, the faces we love, childhood, parenthood, the dance of our days;
music for the age of miracles, indeed.

These days, the apocalypse is no longer the sovereign territory of survivalists, science fiction writers, and religious zealots: in one way or another, the end of the world is something we're confronted with every day. It's headline news, it's the subject of our favourite films, and it might just be real. "Revival Beach", the eighth LP from Canada's The Burning Hell, is a response to that, and the songs on the album imagine different angles and aspects of how it all might end, whether that's a long way off or just around the corner. The Burning Hell has changed a number of times over its ten year history, and Revival Beach sees the band morphed into a trio, with the three members pushing themselves in new directions: Ariel Sharratt on drums and bass clarinet, Darren Browne on bass and bouzouki, and Mathias Kom for the first time ever handling all guitar duties. The songs highlight the musical diversity of the band, shifting from jangly garage rock to 50s ballads, rembetika-tinged instrumentals, waltzes, and delicate, tiny bedtime songs, all while keeping Kom's storytelling as the central focus. Even though it's about the apocalypse, Revival Beach is not a grim record: it suggests that, despite how badly we've messed things up, there might still be something worth redeeming in us. The anonymity creates equality, and prevents a cult of personality... and makes it easier to swap out band members without anyone noticing. It wasn't until 2014 that BRIQUEVILLE released their self-titled debut album, four tracks that all conclude around the 10 minutes mark. Upon release, the band buried 20 copies at various locations across the country, and gradually released the coordinates on their facebook page, animating fans to dig them up from the soil. The idea was met with great enthusiasm among their quickly growing fanbase, and will be revisited and extended for the release of Briqueville's mesmerizing 2nd album, aptly titled ,II", which is to be released now!

Social Decay expands on their intense approach to techno with nods to noise, industrial and drum &
bass. The Manchester duo's second LP-a triple vinyl package-follows 2014's Cosmic Microwave Background, which also came out on Speedy J's label. Although there are hundreds of newer electronic music acts who wield heaviness and saturated sound as their primary weapons, AnD keeps finding bold new ways to separate themselves from the rank and file. The production duo of Andrew and Dimitri - conduits for the industrial music legacy of Manchester - excels at showing that aesthetic extremity does not have to equal monotony, and that it can be applied to any number of song forms. Their new Electric Deluxe LP, Social Decay, is simultaneously one of their most overwhelming and most innovative efforts. This visceral new release comes from the same hazardous, blasted terrain that informs the work of kindred spirits like Kerridge, Oake, and Justin Broadrick's many projects (Broadrick has incidentally remixed material from AnD's previous LP). However, there is lots of room to maneuver within this landscape of constant tension, and AnD brings a diversity and story arc to their overloaded attack that distinguishes them from their peers. Whereas AnD's previous LP Cosmic Microwave Background utilized the duo's intensity to pay homage to the enormity of the universe and the incomprehensibly violent processes involved in its creation, Social Decay takes things back to earth and right down to a 'street view' more gritty and contentious than what Google Maps often reveals. While AnD could have easily made a topical album in the way that classic hiphop considered itself an alternative news source, they sidestep obviously current affairs in favor of broad concepts that could be applied to any point on the timeline of human struggle. Beginning with a feedback-drenched, shuddering premonition of things to come ('The First Element'), each successive side of the album presents a new level of intensity, itself brought about by increasing levels of tempo and compositional coherence. The first suite of tracks, including 'Corrupted Structures' and 'Anarchic Rhapsody,' is pure industrial music comprised of multi-layered noise collage, venomous and halfcomprehensible whisperings, and rhythm structures that compel listeners to maintain an obedient posture rather than to ecstatically hit the dancefloor. Without completely abandoning this atmosphere, the next four or five tracks flirt more heavily with hip-hop inflected beats and an unmistakable sense of hyper-urban vigilance. Window-rattling tracks such as 'Pandemonium' come across like urban audio camouflage meant to defend its users against surveillance by shadowy and invasive entities, while 'Screaming Voices' adds infectious EBM sequences to the mix. Just as it seems like the duo is settling in to a groove, the mutant drum-and-bass rhythm and cinematic bombast of 'Resisting Authority' strikes with explosive high-tempo energy. As carefully planned out as a well-choreographed, climactic sequence from a Hong Kong action thriller, this is one place where AnD's dedication to narrative really shines through. 'Taking Control' and 'Kepler' provide the effective aftershocks to this number, while 'Disturbed Reality' closes out the album in an unexpected sense. While many would rely on a reflective, ambient 'outro' to help fade listeners back into reality, AnD just keep continuing to deliver the crunching beats and looped warning cries, maybe hinting at the fact that reality is not far removed at all from this record's representation of it

"Kodama" the fifth album from Blackgaze pioneers, Alcest, marks the French duo's ferocious return to the stylistic maximalism of its early albums while continuing the band's relentless pursuit for new sounds and fresh ideas. "Kodama" is the Japanese word for 'tree spirit' and 'echo' and from the album's structure and dynamics to its cinematic sound, "Kodama" indeed 'echoes' Alcest's 2010 classic, "Écailles De Lune". But this is no simple back-to-the-roots album: the band has more punch, rhythm and organic feel than ever before. While clearly influenced by bands like The Smashing Pumpkins, Tool, Dinosaur Jr, Grimes and The Cure, "Kodama" ultimately reveals itself as Alcest's 'Japanese album', drawing substantial inspiration from Japanese art and culture. Originally triggered by Hayao Miyazaki's anime film "Princess Mononoke", "Kodama" picks up on the fate of its protagonist and, at its core, deals with the sensation of not belonging;
of living in between worlds, be it city and nature or the physical and spiritual one. Duality is also crucial for the visual approach of the album, realized by French graphic designer duo Førtifem. Paying tribute to Japanese illustrators like Takato Yamamoto, the visuals portray contrasting elements like nature/urbanity, youth/death, femininity/animality and combine poetic elements with darker ones that were not present in Alcest's earlier works. By giving the album a cultural, stylistic and compositional narrative, Neige and Winterhalter keep "Kodama" from just being the latest improvement on the Alcest sound and instead make the album a most rare and exciting thing: a vital, relevant record from a pioneer that not only upholds the band's trailblazing legacy but actually makes you want to see where they go next.

With this Wall Of Sound in the back, Mark LeBosch sings the soul out of his body. Vocal and multifaceted: sometimes soft (It's Alright) times rough (Pretty Boy). He also sang some interesting encounters on tour (Angie (AWW)), the rocky road to the spotlight (Skin Me Alive) and of course the heartache: sometimes hopelessly vulnerable (tears), sometimes desperate and boiling with rage (I'll Be Leavin 'You). His lyrics are always pointed, poetic and unpopular. At first sight, "A SASSY NATION" appears like an utterly delirious delusion of a "SASSY SOCIETY", but on closer listening the emotional depth and the musical diversity that these 12 songs show.
