A “live album from Toro Y Moi” makes sense, then, when you consider Live from Trona wasn’t recorded from an actual concert or festival appearance: rather, the show was performed in front of no one, amidst the beautiful landscape of Trona—three hours away from Los Angeles and a town home to about 3,000—the perfect showcase for a set of Bundick’s laidback tunes. Still, how does the beatmaker and songwriter translate live? In a live club setting, it works, because small, indoor venues amplify his layered, dense rhythms that propel his post-2011 output (and accentuate his penchant for catchy, striking riffs). But how does it work from the middle of a canyon? Bundick circumvents this by crafting a set that mostly sticks to the guitar-laden What For?. By tackling some of his least-loved songs head-on as the centerpiece of this record, Bundick shows a continued willingness to tinker with his work until he’s completely satisfied with the final product, which has been a hallmark of his career. Live from Trona also asks you to consider Bundick’s artistic output as a whole: by exploring sounds we never would have expected to hear from him in 2010, he’s continually evolving. The album leaves you wondering what his next pivot could be.

Nine Suns, One Morning’ is the third album from The Silence since their formation in Tokyo in July of 2014. The Silence transpose ecstatic moments from the rock and roll dreamscape into all-new, living music. ‘Nine Suns, One Morning’ is one of the most explosive, far-ranging albums you could hope to hear in 2016. The Silence employ a great variety of instruments with tremendous discipline, always in service of the songs, which share a goal of finding new lines of expression, no matter where the starting point. While ‘Nine Suns, One Morning’ is a fully-developed album of modern rock and roll that moves fluidly between all styles of music, many listeners are still unaware of The Silence, who have yet to tour outside of Japan but are anxious to do so. Masaki Batoh is the leader of the group, which he formed after dissolving the legendary Ghost in 2014. Forming the sound of The Silence, Batoh draws upon the indigenous and the mysterious aspects of the spiritual world, as exemplified by Western rock, blues and British traditional music. He is supported in his endeavour by keyboardist and Bulgarian Tambula player (and original Ghost member) Kazuo Ogino, jazz saxophonist Ryuichi Yoshida, bassist Jan Stigter and drummer Futoshi Okano (Subvert Blaze, Hijokaidan). These musicians bring together a combined understanding of different values of music, literature, film, culture, psychology, philosophy and the spirit world that informs and expands everything they play together as they work to transcend the illusions of music that have existed until now. Previous album ‘Hark The Silence’ emphasized the solvent quality of open air and the liquidity of free-flowing improvisation from which songs might eventually appear. ‘Nine Suns, One Morning’ departs from the brooding gothic skies under which ‘Hark the Silence’s slow-boiling jams unfolded, revisiting the song-based fixation that marked The Silence’s debut album. The difference this time is that the deep space accessed on ‘Hark The Silence’ strikes into the new songs, infusing them with wider reach and greater cosmic power than before. The song orientation of ‘Nine Suns, One Morning’ is further expressed by the inclusion of two cover versions. ‘Louie Louie’, the most elemental of rock songs, is shaken violently in best Silence fashion, while ‘No Expectations’ is given a gossamer gospel treatment. The Magnetic Fields' 1999 magnum opus 69 Love Songs is getting a vinyl reissue - and it looks amazing. The deluxe box set will feature 6x10" discs, with a full-size, 24-page colour booklet, complete with liner notes from A Series Of Unfortunate Events' Daniel Handler (aka Lemony Snicket) including an "in-depth interview and a track-by-track with songwriter, producer, and multi-instrumentalist Stephin Merritt." The record, which features 69 tracks, is described as "a celebration to the beauty, magic, humor, frustration, longing, and tenderness of the human condition." It was supposed to contain 100 tracks and be a "live musical revue", but was cut with Merritt feeling 100 was a bit long. Merritt will release a new 50-song record in "early 2017". 69 Love Songs is reissued 28 October via Domino. The box set is limited to 1000 copies

Special double 10" edition. With many new roads traveled over the last few years, The Gaslamp Killer is back with the full-length LP Instrumentalepathy. Releasing on vinyl, CD and digital formats September 16th, GLK will initiate his new imprint Cuss Records with Instrumentalepathy. A limited run of double 10” records on black and colored vinyl in tip-on gatefold jackets will be available in an edition of 2,000. French surrealism artist Albane Simon designed the cover, supplying an array of psychedelic imagery that contains a brilliant sense of connection to GLK’s music & the chaos he's survived. Instrumentalepathy features an impressive cast of artists tied closely to GLK over his music career with Brainfeeder, Low End Theory and beyond. Guests include Gonjasufi, Miguel Atwood Ferguson, Niki Randa, Kid Moxie, Mophono, Amir Yaghmai and The Heliocentrics. It’s been over a decade since GLK and Gonjasufi have collaborated on new music, bringing the two natives of San Diego back together for something truly special. As many know, GLK used the triumphs of battling a near death experience three years ago when shaping his debut Cuss Records album. A handful of the tracks were even captured from his bed, unable to walk, with morphine running through his veins and staples in his body. A musical illumination that one could argue helped save his life and steared him towards the achievements he has accumulated with his live band The Gaslamp Killer Experience. Instrumentalepathy marks the catalyst point of an important road for GLK and the electronic community at large. Instrumentelephy, like his latest releases, continues down the rabbit hole of his debut full length Breakthrough (Brainfeeder) and the recent live record with his band The Gaslamp Killer Experience. Molding psychedelic ethos and heavy drum breaks with the traditional music language of his ancestors and the futuristic landscapes of modern electronica, GLK continues to push the boundaries of contemporary music. Instrumentalepathy was recorded at GLK’s personal home studio among other locations and was mastered this year with Daddy Kev at the Cosmic Zoo.

In view of this broad range of activities it was not such a big surprise after the EURYTHMICS’’ (temporary) split to see DAVE STEWART pull THE SPIRITUAL COWBOYS out of his hat in 1990, a band that musically had little to nothing in common with the synth pop of his duo with Annie Lennox. Three guitars! Two drum kits! Up to now, that was only known from southern rock/ jam bands like THE ALLMAN BROTHERS, GRATEFUL DEAD and LYNYRD SKYNYRD. Behind one of the drum sets sat Martin Chambers whom STEWART had borrowed from Chrissie Hynde (PRETENDERS) - if Chambers did not hurry to the front edge of the stage to shake the maracas or sing backing vocals. Guitarist John Turnbull, too, with a history of being in IAN DURY & THE BLOCKHEADS was not an unknown figure within this seven person line-up. Yet, in all the coolness: On the big stage DAVE STEWART and the SPIRITUAL COWBOYS are full power on immediately, unfolding their massive wit with the first Rickenbacker riff of the opener ‘Love Child’ – to draw on their full potential of repertoire during the following 80 or so minutes. The very BOWIE-esk ‘Soul Years’ is standing besides the wistful memory ‘This Little Town’ for that STEWART even unpacks his harmonica. The gospel inspired hymn ‘Love Shines’ lifts off no less (but totally different) than the smooth blue-eyed soul of ‘Jack Talking’ that not only reminds with its title of the best funky times of the brothers Gibb. The epic ‘Heaven & Earth’ finds its natural place here as well as the glam rock overtones of ‘Fashion Bomb’ and the psychedelic wall of sound of ‘On Fire’. And how much the man enjoyed playing his Fender Stratocaster extensively! Not only in the track ‘The Devil’s Just Been Using You‘.

Downloadcode. Europa, the second album from Shrubbn!!, the duo of Ulli Bomans (Schieres) and Marco Haas (T. Raumschmiere), displays a map of Europe on it's cover, as might be expected from the title. The song titles on Europa also draw from the inexhaustible riches of the dialects and villages. From a musical perspective, this record is like an amazing journey through a Europe that is fed by more than just numbers, tables and statistics. Unlike it's predecessor Echos (STRIKE 136LP, 2012), which represented something rather hidden and gloomy, Europa changes direction towards land and people. All the tracks on Europa are named after cities. "Elk" is the sound of the universe screeching as it lands on earth. With saw-toothed flowers and an utterly beautiful intro, the universe finally lands on the lost Alp. "Lom" is cubist electronics over a dense beat. "Eskilstuna", somewhere in Scandinavia, sounds something like snow and rock crystal. One melody after another sits between the round and beautifully layered chord pads. "Vovchans'ki" is a typical track from the Europa phase - A European yearning for the avant-gardist of 1922, modern and extremely brilliant. "Äthäri" sees Schieres and T. Raumschmiere manoeuver through snapshots, waves and highways in a meadow from elsewhere. "Anenii Noi" is a fantastic Shrubbn!! track that still breathes the spirit of Echos. It has a wonderful delayed beat, painted in tonal drums. With "Mondragon", a European spirit is conjured again, one that is much freer and more beautiful, and seems lost for nearly 100 years - crashing layers of melodies and clear sounds of a modern age from the past. "Shumen", previously called "Kolarowgrad", wanders from A to B. "Freistritz an der Gail" is composed of sound. Shrubbn!! builds a wall-of-sound out of hisses, synth teeth and flashes of genius. "Drunen" and "Nöo" are sort of downbeat, but definitely beat. Very dream-like and beautiful. "Nea Koroni" sounds a bit like the Alps and the mountains and valleys and meadows and bells. Shrubbn!! go through "Hrafnagil" and leave the listener in "Leirbotn". If the previous album Echos can be described as a profoundly intense journey through spaces and depths, reverb and shaft, Europa warms up like a dream landscape of earth and clay. The tracks have their own dialects;
they are either coming from or traveling to someplace. There are colorations and stories told.

The opto-musical agglomerate is the pairing of British musician Dan Hayhurst (media devices, electronic instruments) and New Zealand animator Reuben Sutherland (video zoetrope turntable, animation, optix). In Fact, Form Foam isn't only a record with music on it, it's also a movie on your turntable. It's simple: To see the video content, direct a bright lamp at the record as it plays and then film the surface of the record as it spins. The camera will need to shoot progressively at a very high shutter speed with a frame rate of 25fps. Alternatively, view the disc under a strobe flashing 25 times per second. This makes listening to Form Foam on headphones something like watching a 3D movie without the glasses on. But even without Sutherland's visual input, the record has an immersive feel. Sculpture's music is fantastical and absurd, like being plonked down on the set of a particularly wonky Jeunet film. It's gooey and dense, overflowing with seemingly random sequences of musical code, dislocated samples and woolly drums.

Tenderlonious is in a rich vein of form following killer 12”s for Soul Jazz Records’ Sounds Of The Universe imprint, Osunlade’s Yoruba Records and his own 22a label. He delivers a supremely swung house groove characteristic of Peckham’s dancefloors as much as it is reminiscent of Detroit’s heartbeat. When the singer/guitarist of aband spends nearly a year privately piecing together melodies on voice memos and scraps of paper, choosing deliberately not to share with the rest of the band, the result could possibly be tumultuous. But for Ontario's Safe To Say, it ended up being just what they needed. The result of their unconventional process is an unconventional product, "Down In The Dark". It's one that embraces the pop-punk that Safe to Say mastered on their previous EP Hiding Games even as it breaks its own rules.

Ltd / Downloadcode. With his latest record, Notwist singer & guitar player, film soundtracker and label boss Markus Acher, aka Rayon, offers up a sparse, intoxicating LP of instrumentals. As the name suggests, the spaces between notes here are treated with as much gravity as the notes themselves – arpeggios spiralling upwards, conflicting yet interlocking in a dizzying overlap of time signatures. An obvious reference point is Javanese gamelan, with its ensemble of hand-beaten metallophones and bamboo flutes, pulling in all directions at once and yet, like a starling murmuration, maintaining shape as one, rippling whole. Eschewing electronic equipment, the title track sees marimbaphone, piano and vibraphone appearing to mimic a delay pedal, giving the effect of rain falling with odd regiment into a singing bowl. This melancholy but weirdly uplifting arrangement surfaces throughout the record, punctuated by mossy synth hums and subterranean rustling. Like much of Rayon’s work, “A Beat of Silence” beams across like a soundtrack for some forgotten documentary: dusty archive footage of cities being built and eroded in time-lapse seeming to flicker across the screen. Closing tracks “To the Quiet”, a tentative, almost impossibly fragile ballad, and “Kona”, a stretched and mangled wash of orchestral drone akin to Plinth or Edmund Finnis, leave the listener fully enveloped, as this incredibly sensitive work draws to a close. DELUXE VINYL EDITION!!! On 16th March 1996, the Ramones played a farewell concert to 45,000 fans in Buenos Aires in what had been initially planned as the final show of their storied 20-year career. The River Plate Stadium, home to one of South America’s most famous football clubs, had filled to the brim, while none other than Iggy Pop played as the opening act before the Ramones took to the stage. The band returned to the States on the Lollapolooza bill, playing their last show in Los Angeles on 6th August 1996. Nonetheless, they had built such a fiercely dedicated fan base down south that they had become, as branded by a major Buenos Aires daily paper, The Argentine Punk Band, “La Banda Punk Argentina.”
