For Sugar At The Gate, their third and most ambitious album to date, Montreal's TOPS peaced out to LA. They lived and recorded at "Glamdale", a mini-mansion and former brothel located in the Jewel City, Glendale, CA. The unassuming record unfolds slowly, taking time to reveal itself. Like nearly everything TOPS does, multiple meanings overlap with the album's title referring to orgasm, but also to carrot chasing, gatekeeping, and the social contract. "Living in LA was living out a teenage fantasy," says vocalist-songwriter Jane Penny, "living with your band and practicing in the garage. It was also the first time we've ever had that much space to make music. I took the experience of living LA as a challenge to make music that I know is real to me, in the sense of it feeling true and containing true feelings, but also recordings of great songs, the real thing." Layers of sarcasm and sincerity seem to enfold the group like flower petals, yet TOPS' flawless musicianship and p rofound grasp of pop fundamentals are the surest sign that at the core, it's all as real as it sounds.

Because of her troubled family history she was looking for an escape of reality. After surviving a heroin addiction and a brief stint as a bank robber, Sill turned her rather intense passions to music. She released two albums and partially completed a third album before her death in 1979. Sill's music was complex, elegantly crafted and yet completely devoid of pretension or overwrought melodrama. Unfairly lumped in with other female, proto-adult contemporary songwriters like Joni Mitchell or Carole King, Sill was much closer in spirit to Brian Wilson, Nick Drake, or one her idols, J.S. Bach. She had a gift for making very complicated things sound simple, beautiful. The second album Judee Sill made, proved to be her last. Instead of using an outside arranger for the strings for her album Heart Food (as she did on her previous album), Sill did all of the work herself.

"I released the original 12" volume of FIVE FINGERS OF DEATH BATTLE BREAKS way back in 1998, while I was living in Oakland and then San Francisco during a time of incredible movement and creativity within the suddenly exploding Scratch DJ scene. The term "turntablist", coined by DJ Disk, had yet to really catch on outside of the Bay Area scratch fraternity. Having recently moved to California from New York, Paul's turntable aesthetics were strictly 80's East Coast and was more concerned with "catching doubles" (beat juggling) and overall party rocking. In other words, the science of scratching was not something I was even contemplating. Needless to say, I was completely amazed and overwhelmed with what DJs like QBert, Shortcut, Apollo and Mixmaster Mike were doing. It was also around this time that I had discovered that these guys were giving a lot of play to an independently pressed beat record I had made before leaving NY. "Fists of the White Lotus" was originally on an instrumental EP I did with my mentor Joey T on his Empire Records label (Beats Anonymous Vol.1). I remember when QBert found out I had made that record. His immediate response was, "Holy shit! I love that record!" I said back to him: "Can I quote you on that?" I pressed up the first couple of hundred copies of FIVE FINGERS OF DEATH BATTLE BREAKS complete with a sticker on the shrinkwrap containing Q's quote. Those first couple of hundred quickly turned into a thousand. Then 3 thousand. Then before you know it, Volume 2. And 3. And so on. This record now is a nostalgic return to these days for me. "?" -?- (German for "question mark") is the second album by German pop-rock band Nena. It was released in 1984, just a year after the band's first album Nena. Like its self-titled predecessor, this album was produced by Reinhold Heil and Manne Praeker of Spliff. The album's title track was co-written by Nena and the band's keyboard player Jörn-Uwe Fahrenkrog-Petersen. It reached #3 in the German charts in 1983. The lyrics - written by Nena - comprise the thoughts of someone racked by indecisiveness ("Today I'm coming, today I'm also going..Perhaps I'll stay, Yesterday that wasn't for me, Today I need endless love"). The song is a mainstay of Nena's live concerts and seems to be particularly popular with female fans although it is not uncommon for Nena to interrupt her performance of the song, apparently to laugh at the absurdity of the lyrics. Two more singles were spawned;
"Rette Mich" and "Lass Mich Dein Pirat Sein". Fragezeichen -?- reached the number 1 spot in the German, Swiss and Austrian album charts and was certified platinum.

Reveling in dreamy pop music, the three Danes once again pass the product test. »Visuals« is a round, beautiful album without a barb or flat aftertaste. Jonas Bjerre's often hailed falsettoes throw a long shadow towards Death Cab For Cutie, but they are, of course, far away from the Dream-Pop roots underlying the Danish band Mew. Perhaps it is a basic prerequisite of this faded-hearty music sub-genre that one can not pick out any real hooklines. Also the seventh album of the trios from Hellerup, self-produced and recorded in Copenhagen, sounds first and foremost pleasing, exhilarating and beautiful - without any lasting moments, sounds or vocal lines remaining in the long term. Bombastic drums fills, sugary harmonies, melancholic soundscapes, confidence and melancholy. More, a band like Mew perhaps does not even have to muster in order to meet their own requirements. Especially since the songwriting of the band went this time easily from the hand, as Bjerre explained;
A creative high during the last tour made nails with heads and then moved Mew straight to the studio to immortalize the live feeling adequately on record.

After ten years in the instrumental ensemble Balmorhea, Rob Lowe is releasing his first R&B-inflected solo LP, Slow Time, under the moniker RG Lowe. The record, while incorporating elements from pop and choral music, largely looks back on the warmth and spiritual ecstasy of early R&B through the disjunctive lens of contemporary life. Lowe, who plays keys, guitar, and provides the vocals on Slow Time, wrote and arranged about forty songs from 2014 to 2015 at his studio in Austin, TX, where he resides. He then headed to Philadelphia to record most of the album with producer Jeff Ziegler, whose raw and energetic production work on albums by Kurt Vile and The War on Drugs had inspired him. Though his wordless vocals appeared occasionally on Balmorhea's albums, on Slow Time we hear the impressive range and malleability of his voice as he glides from hymnal backing harmonies, to melismatic bridges, to punchy choruses and pained screeches that stretch his voice to its unbeliev able limits.

Everyone is angry nowadays. The internet is awash with anger and people on the streets are angry. LIFE are no exception, they are the untapped anger of the British working class in 2017. Their last offering, Euromillions, was a piece-de-resistance, provocatively released on the day of Donald Trump's inauguration - taking aim and swiping hard at the so called 'Alt right'. "You have the right to bear arms if you've got the right coloured arms" bellowed lead singer Mez Sanders-Green over a cacophony of noise. LIFE are based in Hull, a classic underdog city made good by its new found status as 2017 UK City of Culture. But beneath the cultural progression and media attention there is still fear in the air. It's this fear that runs through the heart of the band's debut album, as explained by Mez: "Popular Music sounds like panic and anxiety, it's the sound of shitting it about whatever happens next week, about what you can weigh through on the self-checkout to get your beans cheaper. It's an LP made up of the psyche of everyone who can see they're getting fucked and there's a lot of people getting fucked right now." The album was produced and mixed by Grammy award winner, Ian Dowling at The Fish Factory in London. It's a blistering, thunderous album that barely leaves room for breath. A quintessentially punk record in the spirit of Sham 69, new single In Your Hands (the LP opener) is indicative of the flavour to come. Anger, restlessness, tension. Lefto (Belgium) and Free The Robots (California) found themselves on tour together a year and a half ago. They decided to cook up a record with the beats they were making from the inspiration collected along the way. Fast-forward to the present and that idea has grown into Karavan, an album full of international exotic melodies and heavy rhythms that reflect the sounds gathered through their years of consistent nomadic touring. Karavan is out on May 19th on vinyl and digital. Lefto. World renowned, he regularly blesses sound-systems from Tokyo to Seoul and Singapore to New York, San Francisco and Los Angeles. He has been a resident deejay for Gilles Peterson's Worldwide Festivals since 2008. Camera under the arm, he is also one of the few deejays on this planet who can play somewhere and have a nice movie on the internet a couple hours later, with over 250 videos on YouTube and Vimeo. It's very impressive. The travels resulted in the Worldwide Family Vol. 1 compilation on Gilles Peterson's Brownswood Recordings with partner in crime DJ Simbad in 2011. In 2012, he put out two compilations, one for American brand 101 Apparel and the other one for Universal Music. Chris Alfaro is Free The Robots, the beatmaker/DJ known for his unique sound, hinting at jazz, blues, psychedelic, electronic, and hip-hop, while remaining undefinable. Using everything from dusty, obscure samples, mind-warping analog and digital synths, and live instruments, his dirty drums and progressive melodies blend everything together into sonically rich compositions. His ever-evolving, imaginative sound breaks free from any boundaries and flows away from robotic monotony. As one of the pioneering artists to come out of the Los Angeles beat movement, Alfaro continues to expand minds around the world with his line-up of original recordings and energetic live performances, sharing stages with the likes of DJ Shadow, Prefuse 73, Flying Lotus, and DJ Krush.
