Heavyweight vinyl! Northern soul boy, crate digger and tastemaker, Keb Darge is a name which needs no introduction to lovers of rare music the world over. His ‘Legendary Deep Funk’ night at Soho’s seminal strip club turned music venue Madame Jojo’s introduced obscure dance-floor soul music to an eager London club crowd, sparking a global appetite for raw, visceral funk. Keb’s search for rare ‘45s took him across the globe, obsessively searching dollar bins, private collections and in some cases, artists homes to discover hidden gems recorded by local bands on regional record labels and pressed in tiny quantities. The rarity of the music combined with Keb’s exquisite ear and DJ ability meant that these records quickly became highly collectible (not to mention expensive) and even made ‘deep funk’ a recognized genre all its own. Keb’s passion paved the way for the modern funk revival, spearheaded by bands like The New Mastersounds & Quantic, even hitting the pop charts with the likes of Mark Ronson. In 1997 BBE released the first of three compilation albums of ‘Legendary Deep Funk ’, among the first LPs issued by the label. Equally loved by fans and loathed by vinyl price-gougers, the music contained on these albums took the world by storm, offering a refreshing change from the same old well-loved funk tunes endlessly re-issued on cut-price comps. The music felt fresh, exciting, full of energy and more authentic than anything all but the most dedicated collectors had heard before. Fittingly enough, to celebrate BBE’s 20th year, we’ve asked Keb to select his greatest hits from the ‘Deep Funk’ series, presented on heavyweight vinyl, CD and digital formats. Thomas Lang is a Liverpool based singer – songwriter, who was signed to SONY records that produced the albums “Scallywag Jaz” and “Little Moscow”. Their heavy, churning rock/metal/punk buzz was a crucial part of Sub Pop's early years, and, along with peers like Mudhoney, Nirvana, and Soundgarden, they defined the sound that reinvigorated the rock world in the early '90s. TAD was led by the physically imposing yet incredibly sweet singer/guitarist TAD Doyle, with bassist Kurt Danielson (ex-Bundle of Hiss), drummer Steve Wied, and guitarist Gary Thorstensen. With an image that sometimes cast the band as deranged lumberjacks, and influence from Head of David and Killdozer, TAD put a uniquely rain-and-fog-coated Northwest spin on '80s underground rock. The band released two albums and a few EPs on Sub Pop between 1988 and 1991, all of which are now lovingly remastered by the band's friend and engineer Jack Endino (Soundgarden, Nirvana, Mudhoney, Screaming Trees) and repackaged with bonus tracks and expansive liner notes. After their 1989 debut album, God's Balls, TAD continued to write and record, releasing a string of singles and the Salt Lick EP between 1989 and 1990. Salt Lick features the single "Wood Goblins," the video for which MTV banned because it was, to the delicate eyes of MTV programmers, "too ugly." The sounds of Salt Lick are, indeed, wonderfully ugly, thanks in part to the involvement of noise-rock technician Steve Albini (Big Black, Shellac, Nirvana, The Jesus Lizard), who recorded the EP. The band continued to release singles and gain momentum in the press. As TAD himself puts it: "Lyrically we had a lot of subject matter that was meant to be tongue in cheek from the beginning but had been presented by Sub Pop and ourselves as true-to-life. As a result, the press had taken it all seriously and began to feed on and ravenously devour the mythology that we had created." This reissue of Salt Lick includes tracks from the "Wood Goblins" single, a split 7" with Pussy Galore, and the "Loser" 7". This material has been out of print on vinyl/CD for many years, and this is its first digital release

God's Balls, TAD's punishing, noise-drenched debut album, was recorded with Jack Endino at Reciprocal Recording in Seattle in 1988, and released early the following year. In addition to their usual arsenal of guitars, bass, and drums, the band employed a variety of unusual instruments - an empty gas tank from a car, a hacksaw, a large brass tube from a microwave transmitter, CB radio mics, a cello bow used on cymbals to emulate guitar feedback - to thunderous effect, adding a Neubauten-esque clang to the band's rock riffs. After releasing God's Balls, TAD flew to Europe with Nirvana for both bands' first European tour. The now-legendary, month-long tour took the bands to the UK, Ireland, Scotland, France, Belgium, Switzerland, Germany, Austria, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Italy, Denmark and Sweden. This reissue of God's Balls features CD bonus tracks from TAD's 1988 debut 7", plus the previously unreleased "Tuna Car" from the 7" session. God's Balls has been out of print on LP/CD for many years, and this is its first digital release.

Recorded at Smart Studios in Madison, Wisconsin with Butch Vig, whose work with Killdozer the band admired, 8-Way Santa finds TAD pushing their sound in new directions. Not a band to rest on its laurels, TAD began to add melodic touches to their sound, as evidenced by the lead single, "Jinx." Many touring dates and shows followed the record, plus a copyright-infringement brouhaha over the original album cover - which was quickly pulled from stores when the couple portrayed in the cover photo objected. 8-Way Santa was the last record with the original TAD lineup, and their last album for Sub Pop before jumping to a major label. This reissue of 8-Way Santa includes tracks from the "Jinx" single, a 1990 EP, and a handful of unreleased album demos recorded by Jack Endino. This material has been out of print on vinyl/CD for many years, and this is the first digital release for the bonus content

Classic power pop reissue from '83 with unreleased studio track DIG! Records is proud to announce the archival reissue of THE STRAND's debut album, Seconds Waiting, originally released by Wasp Records in 1983. An unlikely piece in the underground rock'n'roll puzzle - as much so then as it is now - THE STRAND hail from Old Town, Virginia, a city known more for it's Presidential Masonic temple than an original independent music scene. Situated on the Potomac River across from D.C. and its much-lauded hardcore scene, its no surprise that with the exception of diehard music nuts the THE STRANDS recorded output has remained an obscurity. NO MORE. By design, pop back-catalogues are a mess of two-or-so minute sides: one-hit-wonders, near misses and flat out failed attempts. SECONDS WAITING, recorded in '82 at Hit & Run Studios (yeah, like the early Void demos), makes good on POPS PROMISE with an full album worth of hits - take your pick! It's a rare instance of the power pop gestalt fully realized. "You and Me" kicks the album off with a spot on slice of teenage naivety and a "96 Tears" caliber organ run. "Popular Girl" and "I Understand You" sidestep the saccharine moves of their bubblegum and glam rock neighbors, for more austere vibes of Kinksy doom and gloom, residue from a Brit-invasion hangover. Feedback cues the blitzkrieg of supercharged guitars on "Kids Today", while the previously unreleased studio track, "Scarred Streets", showcases the band at their most agro! "One More Ring" rivals Protex, The Nerves and Badfinger in the category of All TIME GREATEST POWER POP SONG FEATURING A TELEPHONE. Post punk menace weighs in on the second half of the album, oddly climaxing with minor chords and a haunting bridge on the albums title track, for an out-and-out KILLER long player throughout!

It was only last year that Shirley Collins celebrated her 80th Birthday in fine style which included an intimate gathering in the basement of Cecil Sharp House where she treated her gathered fans to song. Folk Radio UK were at this auspicious event which James McKinnon reviewed here. One thing that stuck with me from that review was this: When asked by compere and former English Folk Dance and Song Society Library Director Malcolm Taylor why she has chosen now to break her silence she mulls the question over for some time before concluding “Because I can’t give up. I’m still utterly enthralled by songs and I’m still learning new ones at 80.” Clearly, not a truer word said as Domino records have just announced that they are to release a new Shirley Collins album called Lodestar which will be released on 4th November. This release marks her return to recording after 38 years. The first track to be shared from Lodestar is ‘Cruel Lincoln’. Shirley explains the history of the song: “This is an ancient ballad, found only rarely in England. The theory is that Cruel Lincoln was a mason who was not paid for the work he did for ‘the Lord of the Manor’ and so extracted a terrible revenge”. It also features bird song recorded at the back of Shirley’s cottage.

Formed in 2002, RUINS are from Hobart, Tasmania, Australia. They blend ominous dark-death metal dynamics;
powerful, menacing, melancholic, yet eerily seductive black metal styles;
diverse and intense rhythmic structures;
and both venomous and summoning vocal presence. The writing/recording nucleus of RUINS consists of guitarist/vocalist Alex Pope, formerly of the post-punk noise-rockers SEA SCOUTS;
and drummer Dave Haley, currently also drumming with PSYCROPTIC. Both have also recorded and performed with THE AMENTA, and various other groups and projects over the last decade. Dave’s brother Joseph Haley is delivering the darkest riffs on the new album. The new album ‘Undercurrent' is a new beginning. A reexamination of the thematics in which we have worked for the first four albums. RUINS have achieved a higher order of refinement, after nearly three years in production As the title suggests, it presents an ominous and forboding sense, looming within a strict and powerful framework. In a flooded market, populated by predominantly superfluous material, RUINS with the vital, timeless and true feeling of black metal.

Radian will release a new album, On Dark Silent Off, via Thrill Jockey in the fall. The long-standing experimental group has already released three albums with Thrill Jockey—the last one being 2009's Chimeric. Their new record, which incorporates guitars, drums, bass and a host of electronic hardware, is, according to the label, all about "the juxtaposition of extremes, the contrast between light and darkness;
and in musical terms, sound and silence and brightness/darkness of timbre." It takes inspiration from modern and contemporary works of art, from the abstract paintings of Ad Reinhardt to Outer Space, an impressionistic horror film by fellow Austrian Peter Tscherkassky. "Radian likes to deal with sound that could be seen as byproducts of a musical process and incorporate them into its pieces," Thrill Jockey explains. "The sound of a cable entering the socket of a guitar, the sound of a switch, hums, sound of the fingers tapping on the string of a bass or the sound of the hand gliding between two chords of a guitar. These sounds are not deleted, or hidden, they are often transformed into central elements of the pieces

Remixes come from France's dub scientist Moresounds, who ups the jungle influence with a classic Reese-style bassline and signature rolling snare chops, whilst retaining the balance between dark & light and Montreal-based newcomer Thomas White who flips the vibe completely for a slo-mo Soulection style builder.
