SILENCE EQUALS DEATH is a New Jersey hardcore band that uses its creations as an extension and expression of emotions poured out through music. Formed in 2011 after several of the members spent time together in successful hardcore mainstay act IN SEARCH OF (Stillborn, Scorpion Records), SILENCE EQUALS DEATH is comprised of vocalist Scott Earth, guitarists Fred Delacruz and Wade Culleny, bassist Brett Holloway, and drummer Ryan Bertone. With several multi-talented musicians hailing from diverse in their musical backgrounds and interests, SILENCE EQUALS DEATH keeps their writing process fresh and innovative. Lyrically the group finds it important to address social issues as well as using the platform to connect with listeners on a more personal level. On their anticipated full-length debut End Times vocalist Scott Earth confronts deep personal issues such the loss of a loved one on the song “Devotion,” and puts out a rallying cry of revolt on the songs “End Times” and “Peacemaker.” “Common Ground” celebrates the unity between the band and its fans, while “Hope” screams of perseverance in the face of adversity. End Times was recorded at Scorpion Studios in late 2016, mixed and mastered by Kevin Carafa with additional mastering by Michael White, and artwork by Carlo at Kill Carlo Boy Designs. Band members and friends Nick DiSalvo, Jack Donovan and Matt Coutoalready dismissed any last remains of stoner metal stereotypes on Lore (2015). Their current album, which was written following the long and acclaimed Lore tour in moments of intense creativity, is a journey into prog rock and psychedelic worlds. Six monumental songs, huge in sound, each of them their own cosmic expedition. What begins as driving mid-tempo rock filled with heavy guitar riffs repeatedly erupts into melodic tangents and clever variations. The high demands that DiSalvo places on his own songwriting seem to become more unfettered from minute to minute – as does the pleasure of listening to him. Guest musicians Michael Samos and Mike Risberg have added additional guitars, pedal steel and keyboards to the trio, making Elder’s sound more voluminous than ever, and the influences found here range from 70s prog dinosaurs such as Yes, King Crimson or Pink Floyd to their kindred spirits Motorpsycho or legendary 90’s band, the God Machine. And it is of course a cliché, but Elder bring their own organism to life from all these influences. Elder already strike out on their chosen path on the album opener “Sanctuary”. What begins as a trademark stoner song turns on its own axis several times at minute four, morphing into lyrical polyphonic pickings and using a Mellotron to sweet-talk its way to an unfathomable and brutal finale. “The Falling Veil” moves between Thin Lizzy with palpitations and Motorpsycho (era “Heavy Metal Fruit”). Those who think of Kyuss during “Staving off Truth” won’t be able to hold that thought the entire 11 minutes of the song. And as hymn-like as the riffs can be, the band never settles down to one part for longer than two minutes. But at the same time, the songs never lose their coherence, because all parts are logically woven into one another. And it could be that “Sonntag”, a detour into the Krautrock motor functions of Neu!, most clearly shows the limitless cosmic ambitions of Elder. This album is of epic proportions and fans of the likes of Russian Circles, Ocean Size, 65 Days of Static, Kyuss, the aforementioned Motorpsycho and The God Machine will find much to love here. Art of Propaganda is proud to present Gloson's highly anticipated debut album, Grimen. Earlier in 2015, Gloson's originally self-released Yearwalker EP was reissued by Art of Propaganda to widespead critical acclaim. Although post-metal might be a very millennial creation, with peaks and valleys of creativity across an expansive spectrum, Yearwalker proved that fire still rumbles down below and newcomers can still offer new twists on an oft-tired subgenre. But now, with the release of Grimen, Gloson show that not only was that EP not a fluke, but more so that powerful, poignant art can emerge from humble beginnings and that "post-metal" is merely a springboard for bolder, more daring excursions into the beyond. In the summer of 2012 in Sweden, a group of individuals came together with a solitary goal in mind: to create dark music offset with the smallest glimmer of hope. Thus are the beginnings of Gloson. Instead of being inspired by political or religious themes, the band turned to their own personal and internal wastelands - to see what would manifest from their subconscious, writhing within this very cruel world. The first manifestation was 2014's Yearwalker. Comprising four songs in 32 minutes, Yearwalker was initially released independently by Gloson, but re-released a year later by Catatonic State in their homeland of Sweden and Art of Propaganda for all other countries. The record would garner glowing reviews worldwide, thus setting the stage for Grimen. Gloson's life as a band begins anew with Grimen. Yearwalker already evinced the elan of veterans; Gloson's grasp of sludgy, sometimes-sinister post-metal belied their young years as a band. On Grimen, the extremes subtly suggested with Yearwalker open wider and make for an experience even more dynamic than its not-inconsiderable short-length predecessor. Glosonalready had a penchant for the epic on that EP, and stay the course on Grimen. And yet, that "course" encompasses both darkness and light - and even grey, especially - both earth-moving heaviness and sky-scraping airiness, density and drift. It's a spaciousness that was only hinted at on Yearwalker, and which blooms fully on Gloson's debut album. Within that slo-mo maelstrom, dual vocals wage narrative war, lending yet more dynamics to the band's increasingly finessed sound. This is all given robust, almost-Technicolor clarity courtesy of Cult of Luna's Magnus Lindberg, who mastered Grimen while Gloson's very own Mikael Sällström mixed it.
