180 GRAM AUDIOPHILE VINYL 1972 CULT ROCK ALBUM BY EX-SPIRIT MEMBER Kapt. Kopter and the (Fabulous) Twirly Birds is a 1972 studio album by Randy California. This album was recorded and released following Randy California's departure from Spirit. Spirit's fourth LP, Twelve Dreams of Dr. Sardonicus [MOVLP555], reached the charts but took an inordinate amount of time to receive attention. The album would eventually be certified gold by the RIAA in 1976. Following the departure of Jay Ferguson and Mark Andes in early 1971, Spirit recruited John Arliss (and later John Fine) on bass and resumed playing live shows in March 1971". Randy California, however, was also growing disenchanted in Spirit and left the band in July 1971, along with bassist John Fine. Randy spent much of his time afterwards in jam sessions with various musicians in Topanga Canyon clubs, particularly a club known as The Corral. Some of the musicians who appeared in these jam sessions, along with Noel Redding (under the pseudonym 'Clit McTorius'), Leslie Sampson (the drummer from Noel's band Road, under the pseudonym 'Henry Manchovitz') and Ed Cassidy (as 'Cass Strange'), would end up working with Randy when he started recording solo material in 1972. The resulting album featured numerous covers of the works of contemporary acts such as the Beatles and James Brown, with less emphasis upon original material by Randy. The album was also heavily influenced by the death of Jimi Hendrix in 1970, who had been friends with Randy since they played together in Jimmy James and the Blue Flames. Their third album following the acclaimed Will Ever Pray (2011) and Blind Mouths Eat (2013). On this occasion they have discarded Mark Kluzek's vocals in favour of two twenty minute instrumentals that continue Kluzek's obsessive and singular foray into early colonial history while being a significant departure in terms of approach. The underlying themes for each track are contrasting yet tie together via their historical context; a period where indigenous Australian belief systems and day-to-day lives were irrevocably assaulted. The song Burrowed into the Soft Sky is based on a passage from Patrick White's novel Voss. The book is very loosely based on the final journey through the northern regions of Australia by explorer Ludwig Leichardt. Kluzek took a passage from the book where a comet passes over and Voss, his team and a tribe of Australian Aboriginals engage with and interpret the experience until it is 'burrowed into the soft sky'. The Blood Dimmed Tide is Loosed takes a significantly darker turn shining a light on a pattern of atrocity that took place in the north east of Australia at a time where a dynamic of back and forth, invariably initiated by colonists, took place and culminating in a "dispersal" of a tribe. Who had survived the appearance of Tito (Larriva) and his tarantulas in the Titty Twister, lived since then in an excited anticipation of the next album. What most people forgot in their vest work was that this was the second album, which was notorious in music circles, the successor, who is often only a pioneer. In fact, Tarantism's successful formula on Hungry Sally remained largely intact. Musically, Tito & Tarantula dared a good bit further. The production sounded more sophisticated and more sophisticated, not as rough as the first one. Their “sweat-soaked, pit-ready punk and metalcore,” as described by Alternative Press, will have you paying attention right off the bat. Hailing from ‘America’s Finest City,’ the San Diego five-piece first came into motion in late 2010, claiming their name from watching America’s favorite pastime. “It may sound cliché but it’s a commonly used phrase in sports and it was fitting for our style of music. We are a team, and a team does not step up to the spotlight to fail,” remarks vocalist Kyle Christensen.
