180 GRAM AUDIOPHILE VINYL - GATEFOLD SLEEVE Out Of The Cool is a Jazz album by The Gil Evans Orchestra, recorded in 1960 and released on the Impulse! label the following year. The album was one of Impulse!'s first four albums, released together, and featured a gatefold design and high production values. Gil Evans recorded the album a short time after completing a six-week job at the Jazz Gallery club in New York;
the personnel was largely the same, with Elvin Jones being added. The first track, "La Nevada", was also recorded by Evans less than two years earlier for the album Great Jazz Standards;
the version for Out Of The Cool is given a consistent rhythmic structure by Elvin Jones playing shakers, giving the rest of the band greater freedom and leading to a less boppish version than the earlier recording. "Where Flamingos Fly" has a melody stated by trombonist Jimmy Knepper, and uses an earlier Evans arrangement done for vocalist Helen Merrill. The music on this album was part of a move by Evans towards greater freedom in his compostitions and arrangements, this "new work integrated the written and improvised, at times allowing the balance to shift imperceptibly". The Penguin Guide to Jazz selected this album as part of its suggested "Core Collection", calling it "Evans' masterpiece under his own name and one of the best examples of jazz orchestration since the early Ellington bands"

Johnny Winter And is the fourth studio album by Texas Blues guitarist Johnny Winter, released in 1970. It was also the name of his band for a short time. After two late-'60s albums on Columbia, Johnny Winter hit his stride in 1970 working with Rick Derringer and the McCoys, now recruited as his sidemen and collaborators (and proving with just about every note here how far they'd gotten past "Hang On Sloopy"). In place of the bluesy focus on his first two albums, Winter extended himself into more of a Rock-oriented mode here, in both his singing and his selection of material. This was Hard Rock with a Blues edge, and had a certain commercial smoothness lacking in his earlier work. Derringer's presence on guitar and as a songwriter saw to it that Winter's blues virtuosity was balanced by perfectly placed guitar hooks, and the two guitarists complemented each other perfectly throughout as well. There isn't a weak moment anywhere on the record, and if Johnny Winter And wasn't a commercial success, it was mostly because of the huge amount of competition at the time from other, equally inspired players, that kept numbers like the Winter originals "Prodigal Son" and "Guess I'll Go Away" as well as Derringer co-authored pieces such as "Look Up" from having the impact they should have had on FM radio

Blue Sky On Mars (1997) is the sixth album by Alternative Rock musician Matthew Sweet, who emerged in 1991 as the leading figure of the American Power Pop revival. Like his British counterparts Teenage Fanclub, Sweet adhered to traditional songcraft, yet subverted the form by adding noisy post-punk guitar and flourishes of country-rock, resulting in an amalgam of the Beatles, Big Star, R.E.M., and Neil Young. For the next five years, as Alternative Rock was the dominant commercial force in Rock & Roll, Sweet was a popular concert attraction, and his reputation as an alternative Pop singer/ songwriter was at its peak: his next two records, Altered Beast (1993) and 100% Fun (1995), were both critically acclaimed and relatively successful albums, with the latter reaching gold status and making many year-end best-of lists. Running up to his sixth album Blue Sky On Mars, multi-instrumentalist Sweet worked with musicians and producers known for their work with Lou Reed, Richard Hell, Television, Pearl Jam, Stone Temple Pilots, Fleetwood Mac, and more. Produced by Brendan O'Brien, with its lead single "Where You Get Love" and a strong album opener "Come To California", Blue Sky On Mars got right on the good foot. The cover of the album features an image by Viking 1, the first spacecraft to land on Mars;
the album's liner notes include additional imagery of the planet's landscape as taken by the spacecraft on July 20, 1976. The text on the cover was done by artist Roger Dean, best known for his work on album covers for bands such as Yes. The song "Hollow" was featured in the film The Game, and "Come to California" was featured in the film Nancy Drew.

Crazy Eyes" is the sixth album by the country rock band Poco. The album pays homage to Gram Parsons, as Richie Furay sings both the title track, which he wrote in honor of Parsons, and one of Parsons' own compositions, "Brass Buttons". The album was released just four days before Parsons' death on 19 September 1973. The third biggest-selling album in the group's history, Crazy Eyes is also the group's liveliest and most bracing work and contains some of their most soulful music. In short, it's the fruition of everything they'd been working toward for four years. Curiously, it's also one of a handful of examples of their use of outside help, including Chris Hillman on mandolin. The resulting sound is richer than anything found on any other Poco album, and the only tragedy is that the band reportedly cut enough tracks for two whole albums - one longs to hear the material that remained in the can. As it is, there's not a weak song, or even a wasted note anywhere on this album, and most bands would kill for a closing track as perfect as "Let's Dance Tonight

The Living End is a Hüsker Dü live album recorded at various venues in October 1987 but not released until 1994. It spans the band's entire recorded output, from "Data Control" off Land Speed Record, the band's debut, to a healthy dose of songs from the band's last studio album, Warehouse: Songs and Stories. There are also some unreleased tracks and a cover of the Ramones' "Sheena Is A Punk Rocker." Guitarist Bob Mould and drummer Grant Hart handled the overwhelming share of songwriting duties in the band. Of interest is "Everytime," a rare solo credit for bassist Greg Norton. The track listing is reflective of the band's set lists. "New Day Rising" was a common choice to open shows. As explained in the liner notes, the band preferred to group like-minded songs into what they called "packs of three." Examples of these "packs" include "Standing in the Rain" followed by "Back from Somewhere" and "Ice Cold Ice," as well as "Terms of Psychic Warfare" followed by "Powerline" and "Books About UFOs"

Ancient Melodies of the Future is the fifth full-length album released by indie rock band Built to Spill. The album was recorded at Bear Creek in Woodinville, Washington. With Ancient Melodies of the Future, Built to Spill expanded on the big sound that they crafted with 'Keep It Like a Secret'. "In Your Mind" is a beautiful track with its Far Eastern guitar lines and thumping beat. "Alarmed" spirals into a satisfying guitar and keyboard noise jam, while "Happiness" is like a speeding car - it has the intensity, rush, and twanging swagger of an automobile race. The album closes with "The Weather," a shimmering love song that begins with a resonant acoustic guitar. The narrator describes being "outside in the cool night, and the stars gravitate towards you." These few lyrics are a fitting description of Built to Spill, a band that goes on and on, always changing, always moving forward, but somehow always staying the same - familiar and comforting - as they carry the ancient melodies of personal histories, theirs and yours, into the future

As the Soft Machine's first bassist and original principal songwriter, Kevin Ayers was an overlooked force behind the group's groundbreaking recordings in 1967 and 1968. Joy Of A Toy is his debut solo album, its whimsical and unique vision is a clear indication of how Soft Machine might have progressed under Ayers' tenure. On the LP he is accompanied by his Soft Machine colleagues Robert Wyatt, Mike Ratledge and Hugh Hopper. After a Soft Machine tour of the USA with the Jimi Hendrix Experience, Ayers had decided to retire from the music business. Hendrix however, presented Ayers with an acoustic Gibson J-200 guitar on the promise that he continue his songwriting. Ayers repaired to a small London flat where he composed and arranged Joy Of A Toy features many of Ayers' most enduring songs from "The Lady Rachel" to "Girl on a Swing". It was on this album that Ayers developed his sonorous vocal delivery, an avant-garde song construction and an affection for bizarre instrumentation that would have a deep influence far into the 1970s and indeed the present day
