Florence Price was born in Little Rock, Arkansas and studied at the New England Conservatory, but it was in Chicago that her composing career accelerated. The concert in 1933 at which her Symphony No. 1 in E minor was premiered was the first time a major American orchestra had performed a piece written by an African American woman. Influenced by Dvorák and Coleridge-Taylor, she drew on the wellspring of Negro spirituals and vernacular dances, full of lyricism and syncopation. The Symphony No. 4 in D minor demonstrates her tight ensemble writing, her distinct sense of orchestral color, her Ellingtonian ‘jungle style’ language and her penchant for the ‘juba’ dance.

The musical language of the New York-based Arnold Rosner (1945–2013) had its roots in the modal harmony and rhythm of pre-Baroque polyphony. It evolved in an array of unusual directions, producing a style that is instantly recognisable and immediately appealing – as can be heard in the three works on this album, all receiving their first recording. Rosner’s Nocturne suggests the immensity – and the implacable violence – of outer space. His overture Tempus Perfectum has its starting point in Renaissance dance. This is the tenth release in the Toccata Classics exploration of the music of the Hungarian composer Ferenc Farkas (1905–2000). Here his chamber music with flute is in the spotlight. As with previous albums in this series, the music here highlights the characteristics that make Farkas’ music so appealing: catchy tunes, transparent textures, buoyant rhythms, a fondness for Baroque forms and a taste for the folk-music of his native Hungary that marks him out as a true successor to Bartók and Kodály. Some of these pieces speak a tougher language that shows Farkas to have been in touch with his times, but it is the infectious melodic appeal of most of the music here that carries the day. This album features twelve works comprising 35 individual movements and eleven different combinations of performer. The central performer here is one of Europe’s finest flautists, the Hungarian-Danish András Adorján.

The great Viennese musical tradition, as represented by Beethoven, Brahms, Bruckner and Mahler, found itself straining the limits of tonality during the first two decades of the 20th century. Schoenberg, Webern and Berg consequently forged a new compositional world, engaging in what they saw as the historically inevitable development of the system of atonality. In contrast, however, Karl Weigl continued to pitch his marvellous music in a more traditional style. Schoenberg wrote in 1938 that 'I always considered Dr. Weigl as one of the best composers of the old school; one of those who continued the glittering Viennese tradition'. This is clearly heard across Weigls entire output - in his symphonies, songs, concertos, string quartets, and the chamber works for piano, cello and violin in various combinations.

Energetic as well as poetic is Karola Obermüllers music, and it reveals hidden and unknown elements underneath the multilayered musical material. Zooming in on musical details is a special feature in several of her pieces as in 'Pulstastung' for example. Obermüller is inspired by ancient poetic texts as from the greek poet Sappho. Here she finds the essences of human existence like light and night, eros and longing. In 'Untergegangen der Mond' and 'silbern.' her music tries 'to create moments of magic' (Volker Blumenthaler in the booklet of the CD). In 'Myrmecia' microtonal shiftings are confronted with percussive making of sound, which are creating a 'strange, crackling, and insisting stream of sound', the composer compares to the wild activity of the primordial ant, the title is derived from.

Gustav Mahler's Second Symphony started life as a single-movement tone poem called Todtenfeier(‘Funeral Rites’). Completed in 1888 – one year before Richard Strauss's Death and Transfiguration –it echoed the composer's vision of seeing himself lying dead on a funeral bier surrounded by flowers. Deciding to use it as his opening movement, Mahler didn't finish the complete five-movement symphony until more than six years later, the longest time he spent on any work. The huge scale of the work apart, its weighty subject matter may well have contributed to the slow progress: Mahler himself outlined a scenario making references to the ultimate meaning of life and death (first movement), recollections of lost innocence and the desperation of unbelief (second and third movements), the return to naïve faith (fourth movement) and final redemption from the last judgement (finale). To convey this he took recourse to the human voice: incorporating a solo alto in the 4th movement Urlicht, he went on in the finale to risk comparison with Beethoven's Ninth Symphony by introducing a choir, as well as soprano and alto soloists. Minnesota Orchestra and Osmo Vänskä have received praise for their previous Mahler recordings (‘Vänskä and the orchestra are among the finest exponents of Mahler’s music...’, allmusic.com). The team is here joined by soloists Ruby Hughes and Sasha Cooke and the Minnesota Chorale in the deeply moving close to the vast and tumultuous panorama that is his Second Symphony.

Ronald Brautigam has recorded more than 60 discs for BIS, including the complete solo keyboard music by Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven on the fortepiano. But his first releases on the label, in the mid-1990s, were Felix Mendelssohns concertante works for piano and orchestra on modern piano. When he now returns to these scores, it is on a copy of a Pleyel grand piano from 1830 the year before Mendelssohn composed his Piano Concerto No.1 in G minor. And the orchestra supporting him is the period band Die Kölner Akademie under Michael Alexander Willens, the same team that he has already collaborated with for an acclaimed 11-disc survey of Mozarts keyboard concertos. The historically informed accompaniments and the clarity of the solo instrument contribute to performances of a great charm and freshness, shedding a new light on these works. Composed between 1831 and 1838, they were all written primarily for Mendelssohns own use as a touring concert pianist, but soon entered the repertoire of many other pianists especially the G minor concerto, which was extremely popular in the composers own time.

Within this recording the reading of the 'Historia del Beato San Martino', a devotional text from the beginning of the sixteenth century is brought to light for the first time on CD. The music narrates in a fresh and popular language the events of San Martino of Tours, through a colourful account of his life, which plunges us into the typical mixed atmosphere of divine and profane of the end of Humanism and beginning of the Renaissance. The reciting voice of Roberto Cascio is flanked by the instrumental ensemble of the Cappella Musicale di San Giacomo Maggiore in Bologna. The choice of music was based on the particular period of Italian music prevalent at the end of the 1400s and the beginning of the 1500s, and, in particular, on the widespread devotional-laud genre and the use of spiritual camouflaging (in fact, the melodies derived from the secular repertoire, which, in turn and very often, came from the many French composers who, at that time, frequented the most important Italian courts).

Leonie (‘Lony’) Fraenkel was a German-Jewish exile from Nazi Berlin who set up the Café de Paris on Beethovenstraat in Amsterdam in 1939. In late 1939 she sent a card to greet Peter, her first grandson, newly born in safety in England, and over the next three years she sent a series of letters to Peter and his mother, Lony’s daughter. In 1943 she was deported first to the Westerbork transit camp, and then to Theresienstadt and, finally, in October 1944 to Auschwitz, and was gassed within two days of her arrival. Many years later, that grandson, Peter, now a grandfather himself, discovered Lony’s letters, had them translated and brought them to the attention of the composer Ronald Corp. Ronald Corp has set Lony’s letters in a series of lyrical arioso recitatives for mezzo-soprano, string quartet and piano, lasting just over an hour. Alpha and the Festival of Aix-en-Provence continue their Young Talents series, in which Laureates of the Académie of the Aix Festival are each accorded an album. The American baritone John Chest enjoys a brilliant career that has already led him to Glyndebourne Festival and the BBC Proms. In partnership with the Brazilian pianist Marcelo Amaral, he presents Die schöne Magelone by Johannes Brahms. Among all the wealth of Lieder that Brahms composed, this is his only real song cycle. Brahms had known these popular tales since his childhood, but it was thanks to Schumann that he discovered the novel published in 1797 by Ludwig Tieck, entitled The Love Story of the Fair Magelone and Count Peter of Provence. The work is representative of the poetic, idealised reinvention of the Middle Ages so characteristic of German romanticism: stories of star-crossed love, that usually end happily… ‘What strikes the listener most of all is the song cycle’s epic scale – it is a veritable pocket opera, supported by pianistic writing of great complexity,’ writes Timothée Picard in the libretto accompanying this disc – which is illustrated by an original design by Maia Flore, a laurate photographer of the HSBC Foundation: her poetic universe has already featured in the preceding number of the series, Black is the Colour
