The album is an exhilarating collection of indie anthems, with Emma's candid songwriting and heartfelt vocals at the fore. Chugging away like a great lost Weezer record, the songs are bold, loud and outrageously catchy, with lyrics that hit just the right chord, exploring the burgeoning responsibilities of being in your late 20s/early 30s. When the much-loved Standard Fare called it a day after nine years and two albums, Emma Kupa upped sticks and moved from Sheffield to Cambridge, where she recruited Mark Boxall (bass) and Tom Barden (drums). Previously the bassist and lead singer in Standard Fare, Emma relished the switch to guitar in Mammoth Penguins, allowing her the space to deliver her trademark soaring vocals and to indulge in the occasional mean guitar solo. Recorded by producer Owen Turner (Magoo, Factory Floor), Hide and Seek captures the band at the age they're at right now, reflecting on different aspects of being in their late twenties. Some songs explore the more serious side of life and relationships, such as "Make a Difference". On the other hand, the jaunty "March of the Penguins" deals with having to act like an adult when you still feel young. Elsewhere the rip-roaring "Propped Up", with call-and-response backing vocals, talks about how we're all dependent on others to distract us from negative thoughts, and the infectiously poppy "The Hermit" tells the story of trying to get in touch with a friend who has withdrawn from society. Encapsulating the album's dilemma is the final track, "When I Was Your Age", a gloriously messy and loud song about feeling inadequate about one's achievements.

For years now HANNO LEICHTMANN has been one of the most prolific protagonists of Berlin's electronic music scene and beyond: as experimental percussionist and electronic artist LEICHTMANN has released several albums under his real name, aliases such as STATIC and THE VULVA STRING QUARTET or in bands like GROUPSHOW (with JAN JELINEK and ANDREW PEKLER) or DENSELAND (with DAVID MOSS and HANNES STROBL) on labels like CCO, KARAOKE KALK, M=MINIMAL, DEKORDER, STAUBGOLD LEICHTMANN also composed and produced the soundtrack to CHRISTOPH SCHLINGENSIEF's "The African Twintowers" (the DVD will finally be released this summer , 5 years after SCHLINGENSIEF's tragic death). Besides his musical work, LEICHTMANN also curates conceptual music festivals, like "My Favourite Thing" in 2008 and "Letra/Tone" in 2014. In 2013 he released "Minimal Studies" where he started building tracks mainly by using super short loops from various sample sources. When asked to contribute to TAPEWORM's ongoing tape series, he browsed the remaining 30+ remaining cassettes of his once huge collection, took little snippets of favourite songs, ran them through a modular synthesizer system and created about 40 short pieces, all about 1m30s long. LEICHTMANN: "They are highly influenced by and, at the same time, a hommage to: JOHN OSWALD's "Plunderphonics", STOCK, HAUSEN & WALKMAN's "Me" 7inch and above all YASUAKI SHIMIZU's "Music for Commercials"." Originally released in a limited tape edition (200 items), "Unfinished Portrait Of Youth Today" is now available on LP for the first time - including 6 bonus tracks that were previously unreleased. The artwork was provided by STEPHAN MATHIEU and CARO MIKALEF, the tracks especially mastered for vinyl by KASSIAN TROYER

The name Jesse Hackett may not immediately seem familiar, but the London-based producer has been on the radar of those in the know for several years, recording under the alias Elmore Judd as well as spearheading other projects like Owiny Sigoma Band. Now, Hackett is stepping out as a solo musician under his own name with the album JUNK on the new imprint of Stones Throw, Circle Star Records. Following the self-release of the Elmore Judd LP ‘Angel Sound’ in 2005, Hackett released an album shortly afterwards and was given the opportunity to work with Damon Albarn. In 2010, he toured with Gorillaz as the group’s synth player, and became a mainstay of Damon Albarn’s Africa Express project. Along with Kenyan musicians Joseph Nyumungu and Charles Okowo, and London’s Tom Skinner and brother Louis Hackett (aka Louis Slippers), Hackett also formed Owiny Sigoma Band. The group released two albums on Gilles Peterson’s Worldwide label and toured Europe and Africa. Another fortuitous connection was made – this one with Thom Yorke, who invited Owiny Sigoma Band to join him on tour in 2013. On JUNK, Hackett created the sounds with a Yamaha PSR-110 that he literally found in a recycling dump. Hackett was inspired to work within the parameters of the keyboard as a template and see how far he could take it. “I like the idea of making beauty from rubbish – or so-called rubbish,” he says.“I wrote all the songs in different styles from glam rock to sleazy lizard lounge punk-funk,” he explains, on a “pretty ropey” keyboard. He explores a range of themes on JUNK: on ‘Closet Jazz’, a musician hides his jazz tendencies for fear of being ridiculed by his friends, and ‘I Don’t Wanna Get Old’, tackles fear of ageing via lyrics about an amphibian man. But there’s a bleaker underbelly to many of the songs. Hackett is unafraid to tackle weightier subjects, from a relationship that reached a “sacred oblivion” to imminent apocalypse. Hackett may have been releasing music for a while, but between working under his own name and signing to a new label, in many ways JUNK feels like the beginning.

The Finnish 4-piece rock n' roll band Hard Action will be releasing their first full length album 'Sinister Vibes' on Svart Records in June 2015. The music is deeply rooted in 1970's rock and late-70's punk rock, and the simple-yet-catchy songs are topped with burning hot lead guitar parts, so expect nothing less than an album filled with electric guitar worshipping rock music. You put 2001's "Revolution Rock", 2003's "Secret Alphabets" and 2007's "Agents Of Ahriman" on and you're going to have a hard time taking them off. The band cooks, because they've got that special ingredient. Like their other releases, "Vipers" is a righteous kick in the ass and a testament to the almighty riff. This time, Tommi and Bengt are joined by Oskar Cedermalm (Truckfighters) on vocals, Olle Mårthans (Dozer) on drums, Johan Rockner (Dozer) on guitar, and a handful of guest appearances. Take note - this is what rock bands should sound like. Make way for the "Nest of Vipers." Barry Thomas Goldberg was 23 in 1974, the year his Minneapolis power pop group, The Batch, split up. Rudderless, he set about recording solo album Misty Flats, and though few would hear it in its day, he hit on something very special indeed. "In 1974, the world was weary, the Vietnam War was ending, America was at this place where it didn't know where it was heading, it was the fumes of Watergate days," says Goldberg now. "I'd just left my band, and I didn't know where I was heading either. And that's what Misty Flats represents: neither high road nor low, but somewhere in between." Where The Batch were a harmony-drenched power pop band in the mold of Big Star and The Rubinoos, Misty Flats was an album of ecstatic desolation, an unhinged loner-folk gem that came from a unique place: "I wanted to make the first punk rock album, and if I'd recorded those songs with a band, maybe that's what it would've been," Goldberg says. The album was, instead, recorded in mono in a two-day recording binge on a two-track Ampex tape machine. It features just Goldberg and his friend Michael Yonkers, author of the cult 1968 LP Microminiature Love, playing guitar, bass, harmonica, and vocals between them. In it, we hear echoes of Goldberg's childhood in Las Vegas, where trips to the movies were surrogate babysitters for his single mother. "Hollywood" and "Stars In The Sand" dream of LA life, where "Pop And Ice" has a narrative straight from hard-edged '70s cinema about a drummer who's drafted into the army. "Never Came To Stay" details his return to Minneapolis, where he remains to this day, working as an administrator for the Minnesota Twins baseball team. Back in '74, Yonkers had crushed several vertebrae at work and used his payoff to fund five albums: four of his own and Goldberg's Misty Flats, which was pressed in a run of just 500. "We were into art, not commerce," notes Goldberg now, but at the time he was frustrated his album was allowed to drift off into obscurity. Goldberg forged ahead to record a 24-track rock album called Winter Summer which languishes in the vault to this day;

On the surface, Live at Bush Hall would appear to be a niche product, more for bed-rock aficionados of the late Gary Moore than your average blues fan. After all, the new Eagle Records release — recorded on May 17, 2007 in the Victorian intimacy of the 400-seat Bush Hall in London — finds Moore trying out new songs from his soon-to-be-released Close As You Get album, rather than tramping through a string of better-known moments. Elsewhere, the set is dotted with a choice few older favorites like “Don’t Believe a Word,” from his fellow Lizzy comrade Phil Lynott, his simmering original “Still Got the Blues,” Chuck Berry’s “Thirty Days” and — as the bottleneck-powered closer — a new take on “Sundown” from Son House. And there’s a band that included former Thin Lizzy bandmate Brian Downey. But most of Live at Bush Hall features contemporary compositions like the deeply intriguing opener “If the Devil Made Whiskey,” many never before released in a concert format. Yet, it unfolds as a must-hear primer on blues guitar in general, and Moore’s in particular. As he runs through a dizzying gamut of emotions, styles, tempos and feel, this Belfast-born master remains a wonder of eclecticism — and a performer of powerful subtlety, beyond his initial rock- or fusion-focused leanings. Much of this coalesces in a brawny reading of his own “Hard Times,” which moves from grinding danger to scalding catharsis, even as its lyric hints at the sad fate that lay ahead for Moore. Live at Bush Hall holds no hint of sad reminiscence, though. Instead, Moore is heard here barreling ahead, at the top of his considerable game — doing a bit of it all, and doing it with fiery determination and still-remarkable skill.
