Ici d'ailleurs is proud to present the second instalment of the Mind Travels collection with a radical new studio album from Manyfingers - "The Spectacular Nowhere". Bristol born Chris Cole, has been with the label since 2005, having contributed on several albums notably with Matt Elliott as well as The Dark, by Third Eye Foundation, and as a member of the all-star band, Numbers Not Names, whose first opus What's The Price? was one of 2012's most striking hip-hop records. Back after an ten year hiatus, with this third album under the moniker Manyfingers, The Spectacular Nowhere is clearly the product of several years hard work - the result, an innovative and diverse album unconfined by genre. The depth and scope of the album reveals an eclectic style - incorporating neo classical composition, experimental, avant-garde, moments of pop dynamism and filmic score. There are nods to Philip Glass, Steve Reich and Moondog, where "Ode to Louis Hardin" becomes a love letter to the late, great 6th Avenue Viking, and more pop based references echoing Hood and Portishead. The Spectacular Nowhere invites the listener into a world of aural intrigues - some bittersweet, some melancholic and others full of joy and wonder. The album may aim to be dark and disconsolate at times but also offers more luminous, less anxiety-inducing moments as if to provide an antidote for the traumas it depicts. Notably, the album features contributions from the legendary David Callahan - he of Moonshake and The Wolfhounds fame, and long time hero of Cole. Callahan doesn't just lend his vocal style and lyrics, but gives the listener modernist urban fables, touched by cynicism, lending the album a black humour making this a quintessentially British sound. Their new EP is Stockholm Death Star which is recorded in the band's own studio in Sweden's capital and consists of four new tracks. Produced by the bands guitarist, singer and main songwriter during the dark months of the Scandinavian winter, the music still has an ethereal light glimmering through the blissfully stoned vocal harmonies and chiming twelve string guitar riffs. " If you live in a dark and cold city covered in snow and the times around you are dark as well, you have to look extra hard and try to find a little spark of light inside yourself" as Joakim Âhlund puts it. The Helsinki-based band Kesä (Summer) is gearing up for the release of their eponymous debut album, set to hit the streets on April 30th via Svart Records. Drawing inspiration from the new wave of punk, New Romanticism, and the 1980s, the songs on their debut album create an otherworldly mood, bringing to mind things such as Tangerine Dream's movie soundtrack works, Berlin's mega-hit "Take My Breath Away," or cold, clinical post-punk. "I fell in love with music at a time when Finnish rock music was fascinating. It has been said that the music that touches us first determines our tastes for the rest of our lives," says vocalist Toni Salminen of the philosophy behind Kesä, the band, and his lyric writing. Salmimen's lyrics contain memories, profiles of past people, and scenery from the backyards of the human mind. Despite the at-times grinding and industrial overtones of the debut, the band has striven to include a hint of ethereal warmth and organic energy in their sound. Although Kesä began in the summer of 2014, the quintet's members have a long history in the local punk and hardcore scene, including Lighthouse Project, ILLS, and Total Recall to name a few. For its members, Kesä represents a newfound sense of liberty and the opportunity to throw caution to the wind and dive back into the music that these children of the late '70s and '80s first fell in love with. The band does stress, however, that their intention is to steer clear of being a pure nostalgia-driven vehicle and instead strive to grow, progress, and thrive as a modern creative collective. At first sight, it does not look as though Elvis's 31st album was destined to be a hit. But if you take a look at his artistic biography in the year of its release - 1968 - then you will recognise the clever gimmicks that his wide-awake management employed to captivate rock 'n' roll fans when Elvis was somewhat 'stiff in the hips'. In this fourth Gold Edition, a tried and tested method was used to create a new LP: namely, a compilation of single hits from the years 1961 to 1967. The result was just what fans wanted! Alongside sentimental songs such as "Love Letters", the tearjerker "Lonely Man" and the sobbing, heartstring tugging ballad "It Hurts Me", we find spirited rock 'n' roll ("Witchcraft", "Ain't That Loving You Baby") and honky-tonk blues ("A Mess Of Blues") in a toned-down 12-beat measure. In contrast, "Don't Drag That String Around" is cheerful, light and springy and, - for a change - not a blues number. Then we have the country song "Devil In Disguise" with its angry lyrics, and the soul title "What'd I Say" by Ray Charles with an electric sound that is lent by the Rhodes piano. All in all, this LP is a great collection from the grand old days of rock 'n' roll.
