Don't expect anything simpler from me!' Emmanuel Nunes (1941-2012) was an artist of almost intimidating ability and self-confident stubbornness much like his teachers Karlheinz Stockhausen and Pierre Boulez. Apart from early works and large musical drama projects, his output consists primarily of two large-scale cycles. The first contains nine works, including Minnesang for twelve vocal soloists: a mystical and spiritual work that translates the medieval art of Minnesang into modern terms and whose musical effects are founded on the intelligibility of the texts. Nunes also composed a number of pieces not included in these cycles, among them the orchestral work Musivus, which was written for Expo 98 and premiered in a revised and expanded version in Cologne in 2001. Musivus is 'a monument of spatialization' that can make the listener dizzy with its tiny fields of musical activity that bloom into a gigantic visual and acoustical mosaic that is extremely changing to a traditional, process-oriented way of listening.

Alberto Nepomuceno was a herald of Brazilian musical nationalism. He was one of the first composers in his country to employ elements of folklore in his compositions, he encouraged younger composers such as Villa-Lobos, and his music was conducted by Richard Strauss. The Prelude to O Garatuja, an incomplete opera, is one of his best known works and an example of a truly Brazilian lyric comedy. Série Brasileira is a vivacious suite that employs maxixe rhythms and ends with the feverish batuque dance, while the Symphony in G minor is one of the earliest such examples by a Brazilian, a heroic and lyric structure revealing the influence of Brahms.

The excellent soloists of this recording are Johanna Winkel, soprano, and Michael Nagy, baritone. Recorded at the NOSPR Concert Hall, 2017.

In his short life (1839–72) Eduard Adolf Tod garnered a reputation as one of the finest organists of the day: Liszt praised his playing, and he gave a recital in the Royal Albert Hall in the very year of its opening. Most of Tod’s handful of works for the organ – solo and as a duo partner – have not been recorded before. Here they are joined by three other little-known German organ sonatas – by Ludwig Thuille, Carl Reinecke and August Ritter – to give an overview of the genre as it evolved from its well-behaved Mendelssohnian origins into late-Romantic grandeur.

His appointment in 1757 as maestro di capilla and organist at the Escorial, the royal palace established by Philip II of Spain, allowed Antonio Soler to mix with fellow court musicians, among whom was Domenico Scarlatti, whose influence was to remain profound. Soler wrote some 150 sonatas, his greatest compositional memorial, most for the young prince, Don Gabriel. The works in this volume reveal Soler’s mastery of dashing bravura and his exploitation of a full keyboard range in Sonata No. 88, felicities of hand-crossing in Sonata No. 89, and his awareness of the contemporary influence of Haydn in Sonata No. 92.

Mstislav Rostropovich (1927-2007) is unquestionably one of the great personalities of the 20th century - as a cellist, as a pianist, as a conductor, but also as a politically active citizen, who made use of his international artistic renown to help dissidents or strengthen democracies. After it became known abroad that he had written to four Russian newspapers in defence of Alexander Solzhenitsyn, he found it harder to work in the Soviet Union and he and his wife, soprano Galina Vishnevskaya, were eventually stripped of their citizenship. Although rehabilitated by Gorbachev and awarded the highest order of merit by Putin, they declined the restoration of citizenship, preferring to remain stateless. The recordings compiled into this set were made when Rostropovich was already famous in the Soviet Union (Stalin Prize 1951, Lenin Prize 1961) but largely unknown in the West. They document the early career of Mstislav Rostropovich, which is of particular significance for the premieres of major works by Shostakovich, Prokofiev and Kabalevsky.

This new release features Schumann violin sonatas played with period instruments, including an Anselmo Bellosio violin, ca. 1770 with Gut strings and an Erard piano, serial number 32602, built in 1862. Maalismaa and Holmström have worked as a duo since 2011. They are co-directors of both the Ristiveto Festival, which specializes in performing late 19th-century music on period instruments, and the Classical Hietsu concert series in Helsinki. Finnish violinist Eriikka Maalismaa plays in a variety of ensembles and collectives and visits frequently as leader of orchestras. She is fascinated by saying Yes to things that scare her. Performing music of our time as well as collaborating with composers is one of her biggest interests. She finds it a musician's duty and a privilege. As a quite natural part of the profession, Eriikka loves setting her violin up with raw gut strings and finding sounds and colors that are no longer available to listeners of modern-day instrumentalism. Emil Holmström has performed as a soloist, chamber musician, and ensemble keyboard player throughout Europe, the Americas, Japan, and Australia. He appears frequently at Finnish music festivals and concert series and has been a featured soloist with the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Lapland Chamber Orchestra, and the Lahti Symphony Orchestra. An ardent champion of new music, Holmström is a member Finnish groups defunensemble, the Uusinta Ensemble, and the Tristero Piano Trio, and plays as a regular guest with the Avanti! Chamber Orchestra.

Gottfried von Einem was one of the great composers that played a major role in rebuilding the Austrian music scene post-1945, following the devastating cultural policies of Austro-fascism. These policies were conspicuously hostile to modern trends, even more so than those of the Nazis. We remain indebted to von Einem, not least for his rescuing many scores by banned colleagues from destruction. Catchy thematic and melodic ideas, sharply accentuated rhythms, strong gestural and dance-like energy, a distinct feeling for differentiated timbres: these elements determined Gottfried von Einems musical voice from an early age, and remained his hallmark throughout his life.
