UK dubwise reggae and dancehall featuring international vocalists. It's time to Pack Up And Run! Glaswegian producer Escape Roots has been steadily plying his trade crafting steady rocking dubwise riddims and remixes for artists such as Daddy Freddy and Parly B as well has holding down a residency at Mungo Hifi's legendary "Walk & Skank" weekly session, supporting a who's who of UK and international reggae all stars. Along with regular appearances at festivals such as Boomtown and Kelburn Garden party over the last few years, he has been building an arsenal of his own productions and killer dubplates. Always built for soundsystem, his production has grown and developed immensely over the last few years and the added dynamic of an amazing selection of vocalists really helps to deliver a deeper message. Kicking things off comes "One Step At A Time" featuring veteran Jamaican singer Black Warrior, then regular collaborator Tom Spirals steps up alongside sweet vocalist George Palmer for a wicked combination, having first met at International Dub Gathering in France 3 years ago. Unit 137 MC Jago then takes control of the mic, urging us to "Cool Down" with backing vocals from fellow sparring partner Deemas J, followed by Dark Angel aka Mowty Mahlyka who comes in strong with "Turn Ya Lights On" - a cautionary tale warning us to be wise to the corruption and confusion in the world. The 'Doncaster Raggamuffin" Parly B then blesses us with his trademark style and pattern on the heavy "Nah Get A Look In". Hempolics and The Drop frontman Dandelion is next with the massively popular "Ganja Socks", whilst Irish singjay Cian Finn takes things deep and brooding with his take on the traditional gospel song "Sweep Over My Soul" in a space dub style. Elsewhere rising Jamaican singer Skari and El Fata supply sweet vocals to "Feel Good" (previously heard on Scotch Bonnets "Puffers Delight" compilation) and "This Melody" before Russian soundboy Tenor Youthman leaves his trademark hill and gully rider style on "Dilemma" atop a classic riddim. Rounding things off is another Unit 137 cohort and long time friend Galak Spiritual for "Hold a Meditation", bringing his sweet singing style combined with a roughneck attack in the verses. Unifying an international line up of vocalists is no mean feat, but Escape Roots handles it with ease on this future classic slice of reggae and dancehall that runs tough not only in the dance, but is contemplative enough for repeated home listens too.

The first steelpans where invented in the 1930s in Trinidad, designed from the tradition of rebellion against the colonial powers in Trinidad & Tobago. More than 3000 years back dates the earliest version of the Kalimba, also known as Mbira/ Thumb Piano. However, those u are about to hear on this production where handcrafted in today's Austria. Communicating with the mighty sounds of Courtney Jones Steel Pan & the fragile sensitive layers of Lore's flute, the Kalimba merges the old and new world with its distinctive sound.âÇ" The environment in which these musicians live and work is Vienna, in the middle of Europe, an austere ancient city in transition. A multicultural "market place" set alive by its multi ethnical inhabitants and their wish to respect the roots of their individual culture as they are melting with the colorful life of 21st centuries Europe. In respect to Courtney Jones, who passed away during this production, Ali Tersch (aka Alex X) finalized the production, conscious of the responsibility to keep the vibes authentic and the music well produced, just as Courtney would have loved it. An album that fuses "authentic world music" but also modern beat, hip hop and dub. On this, the band's first album, the focus is firmly on an amalgamation of so called world music, with the genre's elementary electronic facets. They grab reggae flavoured by the roots in their inimitable way and build a varied cocktail of roots, soundscapes, hip hop and dub.

Gone Clear, is the quintessence of reggae and groove, as only Manu Dibango can conceive them. After a stay in Nigeria and a great tour with the Ivorian Radio-Television Orchestra, the Cameroonian saxophonist landed for the first time in Kingston, Jamaica, in 1976. Just a few steps away from Bob Marley's home (taking the time to greet him every day on his way to the studio to say “hello”!). It was with the cream of the crop of musicians at that time (Robbie Shakespeare and Sly Dunbar, Randy and Michael Brecker, Lou Marini...) and in the legendary Dynamic Sounds Studios that he shaped this 100% roots album. With a slightly relaxed and positive atmosphere, far from the usual militant style lyrics, Manu's reggae invites you to "chill out", and is supported by a highly effective backing choir. Like most of his albums, Manu's reggae is also very mixed, blending African, Jamaican and American inspiration with danceable funk on tracks such as Goro City and Happy Feeling. The cherry on the cake is his hit Soul Makossa - sampled without permission by Michael Jackson and Rihanna a few years later – and arranged in a Caribbean sauce in a slower version, renamed Reggae Makossa. If there's one thing we can truly salute here, it is that Manu Dibango can compose reggae with respect for tradition while adding his own personal touch. We can see this touch later in the album Cubafrica, where Manu was able to surround himself with the best Cuban musicians (the Quarteto Patria), to deliver a very high-quality Afro-Cuban album, adding a new gem to his fabulous discography.
