While the connection between Cuban pianist Omar Sosa and Italian trumpeter Paolo Fresu was established back in 2006, their partnership truly blossomed with Alma (Ota Music, 2012), a beauty of an album with a soft sell approach. That record—quite possibly the most moving item in either man's discography—prioritized heart over all else, and this follow-up date follows suit. Eros—the god of love—serves as muse and sculptor on this easygoing outing. Sosa and Fresu are both in fine form, lulling the listener into a space where the many different faces of love serve as guides, and they bring a smart mixture of passion and prudence to bear in the music. That's evident from the start, as "Teardrop-Ya Habibi"—a clever take on a Massive Attack song, featuring vocalist Natacha Atlas—takes flight. Arabian sounds, hints of neo-soul, and moody notions are all blended and molded into a shapely design that's simply mesmerizing. Elsewhere these two move in different stylistic directions while maintaining that same balance, addressing the need for emotional release and restraint. "Sensuousness" and "What Lies Ahead"—pieces which utilize the rich cello work of Jaques Morelenbaum—capitalize on candidness. Lyricism and wistfulness take hold and never let go. Then there's "Zeus' Desire," a number that blends new age sentiments with quaint thoughts and positive spirits; "My Soul, My Spirit," a work that features Atlas and operates in a cinematic realm not too far removed from the work of Lisa Gerrard with Hans Zimmer; and "Eros Mediterraneo," which opens on Fresu in a pensive state before shifting to sunnier environs. All of it is of a piece, yet each track has its own identifying markers and personality traits. Both Sosa and Fresu are masters of putting across moving thoughts. The Frank Cunimondo Trio is also a fixture of the Pittsburgh Jazz scene. Frank's most popular recording "Feelin' Good" (from the album The Frank Cunimondo Trio Introducing Lynn Marino [MOVLP1821]) was used in a commercial by a popular beer brand and became an international hit. In the 80s Frank owned a jazz club in Pittsburgh called "Cunimondo's Keyboard Jazz Supper Club." In 1989, he was voted "Best Jazz Pianist" in Pittsburgh. His style is most often compared to pianist Bill Evans. The Frank Cunimondo Trio originally released Sagittarius on Mondo Records in 1975. It includes a cover of Herbie Hancock's "Chameleon". On the album Frank Cunimondo plays acoustic and electric pianos, string ensemble, synthesizer, conga and cabasa while Ray Russell plays bass and Lenny Rogers drums. Vinyl re-issue of neo acid jazz classic from 1998. Brooklyn Funk Essentials remembers the days when you could say "acid jazz" without snickering. The dozen-member collective's 1995 RCA release, "Cool Steady and Easy", placed them in the thick of the jazz-funk big band race.Their follow up, In the Buzzbag (Shanachie 5050, 61:05) doesn't tinker with the basic formula that much-you'll hear plenty of retro funk and smooth soul, with some occasional island flavors thrown in for good measure. And there is acknowledgement of current flavors; the disc kicks off with the drum-n-bass flavored "Bye and Bye". The most noted addition, however, is Laco Tafya, a group of Turkish/Romanian gypsy musicians (the collaboration was inspired by a spot on the World Music Festival in Istanbul in 1996). The title track - a six plus minute workout shares its name with an inexpensive brand of Turkish wine. The troupe adds flavoring throughout ("Zuma Preserve" "Istanbul Twilight"), working best on the infectious "Ska Ka-Bop ". It may not turn anyone's head around, true, but "Buzzbag" has enough bite to keep from completely blending into the scenery. As groove jazz moves into the hip-hop era, it's tougher and tougher to get attention with an old-school funk flavor. For evidence of this, look no further than the legions of corny converted rockers devoted to "getting down and funky"; often coming off like those goofy cover outfits playing through the commercial breaks on "Jenny Jones". Bottom line: If you are doing funk nowadays, you better be tighter than a clam with lockjaw. Few outfits are tighter than New Orleans' Galactic, whose sophomore album, Crazyhorse Mongoose (Capricorn, 314 558 842-2). From the opener -"Hamp's Hump" through the slinky "Tighten Your Wig" this sextet nails every groove, every bridge, every second line slide with uncanny skill. Though the band was originally started by bassist Robert Mercurio and guitarist Jeff Raines, drummer Stanton Moore is the unspoken focus of these relentlessly propulsive tunes. A former student of Crescent City drummers like Johnny Vidacovich and Russell Batiste, Moore (whose solo disc is well worth checking out) pokes and prods, driving Mercurio's sludgy bass and Rick Vogel's languidly greasy keyboard. He and sax player Ben Ellman take it back to the chicken shack on the laid back disc ender, "Quiet Please". Add singer Theryl de Clouet's soulful vocals and you have a must-get groove disc. 180 GRAM AUDIOPHILE VINYL 4 PAGE INSERT Dhafer Youssef is a composer, singer and oud player from Tunisia. The oud is an Arabic lute, a pear-shaped string instrument that can achieve a beautiful sound from those who know how to master it. Youssef developed an interest for jazz music at an early age and started singing when he was still five years old. Music comes natural to him as he is derived from a long line of muezzins and mastering vocal performances is to him a heritage and a family tradition. Later he left his homeland to start a jazz career and has lived in Europe since 1990, usually in Paris or Vienna. He also works in avant garde and world music where he has been nominated for awards. Today he is considered to be the most inventive oud player and a leader of the movement referred to as contemporary music, which fuses Eastern and Western music. Dhafer Youssef's talent extends to the world of film music. Critics note his outstanding performance in the soundtrack of Black Gold composed and conducted by the legendary James Horner in 2011. The latter invites him to a new collaboration in 2012 for the soundtrack of The Amazing Spider-Man. In 2013 Dhafer Youssef released his album Birds Requiem. This album is a very personal recording that has been prepared at a turning point of the artist's life. The album is structured around the Birds Requiem Suite ("Birds Canticum", "Fuga Hirundinum", "Archaic Feathers" and "Whirling Birds Ceremony") and can be posed as music for an imaginative movie. This Meets That finds guitarist John Scofield looking both backward and forward. Never one to rest on his laurels, Scofield has throughout his career applied his virtuosity to several different streams of jazz, ranging from fusion-esque to orchestral to straight bop. "This Meets That" is something of a mixed bag. The opening track, the Scofield-penned "The Low Road", is a swinging funk jam that's one of several tunes on the record to employ a four-piece horn section. It's a smoker of a track, with Scofield often teasing with distortion but never straying so far away that it might be called unmelodic. In addition to the Scofield originals, three left-field cover songs demonstrate Scofield's ability to apply his technique and imaginative thinking to just about anything he chooses. Perhaps one shouldn't be surprised that a musician always looking to expand his reach would try his hand at squeezing a classic country hit into a jazz framework, but that's what Scofield does on the old Charlie Rich ballad "Behind Closed Doors". It's a sweet, bluesy take and Scofield maintains a pure, clear, non-ironic tone as he explores the song's nuances. The album-closing "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction", from the Rolling Stones' songbook, is treated much the way Otis Redding once did, as a forceful soul stomper (albeit with brilliant soloing), and "House of the Rising Sun", a traditional blues recorded by dozens of diverse artists, but perhaps best known from the Animals' 1964 hit, veers far from its familiar melody as Scofield plays tag with guest guitarist Bill Frisell and Stewart and Swallow race around each other and the two stringsmen. "Heck of a Job", its title an obvious reference to President Bush's much-ridiculed "heck of a job, Brownie" statement in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, does use as its foundation a rhythmic base that could have come from New Orleans' Meters, while "Strangeness in the Night" isn't that strange at all, with its stop-and-go rhythm and punchy interplay. "Pretty Out", however, is pretty out there, not quite anarchic but open-ended and frisky. "This Meets That", as its title implies, is less of a thematic album than some of Scofield's more recent endeavors, but it's one that reminds listeners that both his chops and sense of adventure are not only intact but still growing.
