This Anthology includes 17 tracks from the sixteen albums he recorded for the label. It includes all of his great tracks including vocal versions of the Jazz classics, Oliver Nelson 'Stolen Moments', Freddie Hubbard 'On the Red Clay', Herbie Hancock 'Cantaloupe Island' and 'Maiden Voyage' , McCoy Tyner 'Effendi' and John Coltrane 'Naima', most of which he wrote the lyrics for. He also put beat poet Jack Kerouac's words to music for the track 'Be Bop Lives (Boplicity)' The Anthology also includes his interpretations of Brazilian songs 'Waters of March or 'Two Kites' written by Antonio Carlos Jobim and 'Empty Faces' co-written by Milton Nascimento. The more soulful side of Mark is illustrated by the Stevie Wonder song 'Looking for another pure love' and 'I Don't want to cry anymore'. His music was very popular on the London Jazz dance scene in the late 80's and 90's and still is today having been championed by Gilles Peterson and many other DJ's. The song he wrote about the scene 'Ding Walls ' is included, this being the first time that track has ever been released on Vinyl. It takes a very special singer to take a well known Beatles song and re-interpret it with a Big Band arrangement, and make it his own. Axiom has significant historical importance by being what is quite possibly the first European free jazz record, even if it was not released at the time. Recorded in Copenhagen in October 1963, it should have been Tom Prehn Quartet's debut album for the Sonet label. But by the time the test pressings arrived, a couple of months later, the music already sounded old to them and Sonet subsequently pulled the plug. A few sleeves and labels had been printed but only two complete copies survived, making it one of the rarest jazz albums ever. Axiom is expressive, full frontal free jazz of the highest order, and to think it was created by Danish musicians, most of them barely into their twenties, in 1963, is frankly mind-boggling. On the other hand, Scandinavian audiences, especially in Denmark and Sweden, had already welcomed controversial musicians like Albert Ayler and Cecil Taylor with open arms.. Needless to say, we're very proud to release this album for the first time on vinyl. The original sleeve has been painstakingly recreated by Kim Hiorthoy. No ifs and buts! Ray Charles belongs in every jazz collection. Friends of pure jazz tend to forget this in the light of his numerous hits in categories such as gentle ballads, and even country and western songs, and rhythm’n’blues during the more than 60 years of Charles’ extremely successful (also financially speaking) career. The producer Neshui Ertegun gathered together a star-studded cast for this Atlantic Records studio recording. There was David Newman on the tenor sax, Joe Harris on the drums, and even Oscar Pettiford on the bass. Not forgetting Ray Charles himself who was an excellent jazz pianist. The studio was saturated with the blues! A relaxed mood prevailed, just as one might imagine it. The musicians came to the studio after a concert, they were completely drained, worn out, exhausted: they had the blues and then they played the blues. Even a standard work such as Gershwin’s "The Man I Love" was turned into an elegy. Only "Ain’t Misbehavin’", which reminds one more of Earl Hines than Fats Waller, and "Charlesville" - a fast blues number - were treated to a change of tempo. "The Genius After Hours" is a self-portrait that exhibits the less well-known talents of this exceptional artist during the second half of the last century. It makes great listening for all lovers of jazz, soul, blues, rhythm’n’blues, country and western, pop, funk … You name it, Charles has got it! Общая любовь к раннему квартету легендарного саксофониста Орнетта Коулмена вдохновила их на смелый монофонический инструментарий. Сложная, но абсолютно надежная ритм-секция является тем клеем, который держит Get The Blessing вместе, а два фронтмена на саксофоне и трубе работают с басом, создавая мелодии и гармонии.
Наряду с джазовыми корнями, в Get The Blessings прослеживаются и другие разнообразные влияния.
