180 GRAM AUDIOPHILE VINYL 4 PAGE INSERT Dhafer Youssef is a composer, singer and oud player from Tunisia. The oud is an Arabic lute, a pear-shaped string instrument that can achieve a beautiful sound from those who know how to master it. Youssef developed an interest for jazz music at an early age and started singing when he was still five years old. Music comes natural to him as he is derived from a long line of muezzins and mastering vocal performances is to him a heritage and a family tradition. Later he left his homeland to start a jazz career and has lived in Europe since 1990, usually in Paris or Vienna. He also works in avant garde and world music where he has been nominated for awards. Today he is considered to be the most inventive oud player and a leader of the movement referred to as contemporary music, which fuses Eastern and Western music. Dhafer Youssef's talent extends to the world of film music. Critics note his outstanding performance in the soundtrack of Black Gold composed and conducted by the legendary James Horner in 2011. The latter invites him to a new collaboration in 2012 for the soundtrack of The Amazing Spider-Man. In 2013 Dhafer Youssef released his album Birds Requiem. This album is a very personal recording that has been prepared at a turning point of the artist's life. The album is structured around the Birds Requiem Suite ("Birds Canticum", "Fuga Hirundinum", "Archaic Feathers" and "Whirling Birds Ceremony") and can be posed as music for an imaginative movie. The artist, lead singer and song writer Beady Belle will release her first album as a solo artist in May 2016. The Beady Belle band split up in 2015. The Beady Belle artist will from now on continue the journey on her own. The new album is symbolically entitled "On my own". On this new album (as also on all the previous Beady Belle albums) she has written all the music and lyrics. The famous jazz pianist, Bugge Wesseltoft is the producer of this new album and he also plays all the keyboards (Grand piano and Fender Rhodes). Beady Belle followed her dream. The "On my own" album was recorded in New York City, with world class American jazz musicians; Gregory Hutchinson (drums), Reuben Rogers (bass) and Joshua Redman (saxophone). The atmosphere from the pulsating city was successfully captured into the intimate recording studio on Manhattan. All songs live recorded. The sound of the album gives associations to the 70s. Recorded at Eastside Sound Studio (established in 1972) - with acoustic drums, double bass, grand piano and Fender Rhodes. There's a feeling of excellence. All the way from the sublime lyrics, the strong songs, the virtuoso musicians in the band and the featuring soloist to the intimately soft lead vocal. It's playful yet under control. Smooth yet with friction that bites. The songs are: melodic, groovy, powerful and alive! Each song is a mixture treat of genres - jazz, pop, soul and R&B - simply Beady Belle. Beady Belle (the band) is dead; long live Beady Belle (the solo artist). Recorded at Eastside Sound Studio in New York City, the album features a strong – but not overpowering – undercurrent of 70s soul and vocal jazz, mixtures of intimacy and exuberance, and pulsations both urban and urbane. The musicians include Bugge Wessletoft (who is also the album's producer) on keys, Gregory Hutchinson on drums, Reuben Rogers on bass and Joshua Redman on saxophone. While primarily an album of superb songs highlighting Beady's honey-smooth-yet-gutsy voice, the musicians are given plenty of room to shine, with high-end solos and great chops on display. Beady's compositional and lyrical skills are also showcased here as never before, offering us further dimensions only hinted at on previous releases. Melodically gripping, harmonically intricate, lyrically intelligent (without pretentiousness), and underpinned by solid grooves, the songs mine rich seams to bring many treasures for fans and newcomers alike. Whether warm and easygoing like a smoky late evening bar, or bright and sunny (with your iced coffee of choice), the album moves through a huge variety of moods, hues and colors, tones and shades. Further backline support comes from Mathias Eick, whose plaintive trumpet lines weave gracefully with Beady Bell's vocals, while Audun Sandvik's cello on "Almost" adds a unique resonance that lends the song a cinematic quality. Torun Eriksen and Anja Martine Mørk accompany on backing vocals with a high level of perfection, sounding as one. The album's guitar chops are provided by Fran Cathcart, and round out the diverse palette that constitutes a jewel in the Beady Belle crown. However, the true glint of that jewel is, as always, the stunning voice of Beady Belle herself, plaintive, seductive, exuberant, moody, evocative and unique. With each new release, Beady Belle's voice has become richer, more capable, and laced with nuance and subtle expressiveness. The Nubians of Plutonia is an album recorded by Sun Ra and his Myth Science Arkestra c.1958 - 1959 and released c.1966 on his own Saturn label. Originally released in a blank sleeve under the title The Lady With The Golden Stockings, the album had gained its current title, and sleeve by Richard Pedreguera, by 1969.[3] In common with most releases by Sun Ra at the time, the record was printed in extremely limited numbers and primarily available at concerts and mail-order. The record was reissued by Impulse! in 1974, and on CD by Evidence in 1993, backed with the contemporaneous album Angels and Demons at Play. The Nubians of Plutonia... evidence an Arkestra moving into ever looser, more abstract ground. The percussion becomes more varied and moves ever closer to the foreground. 'The Golden Lady' seduces with a swaying groove created by a combination of simple parts: hi-hat, cow bell, wood blocks, rolling floor toms and bass. Ra then sets up a dark melodic theme, and then the Arkestra proceeds to weave a series of jaunty, blues-tinged solos into the fabric of the groove. 'Nubia', 'Africa' and 'Aiethopia' continue this excursion into more mystical, rhythm-based territory. The Arkestra utilizes the same ominous, simmering percussion beds, now augmented by more exotic instruments like Pat Patrick's 'space lute', which gives a playfully sinister sound to 'Africa'.... This powerful, multi-faceted music is a great place to start if you are just beginning to travel with Sun Ra, or a great way to continue the journey. Although Eero Raittinen was mostly known as a pop singer in the 1960s and then rose to brief international fame as the lead vocalist of Tasavallan Presidentti, his 1970 solo outing is a more down to earth affair. Recorded with a superstar lineup (Jukka Tolonen, Paroni Paakkunainen, Vesa Aaltonen, Eero Koivistoinen...), Eeron Elpee was a more personal thing for Raittinen. Owing a lot to the British R&B movement of the sixties, Eeron Elpee moves smoothly between more standard blues and moody jazz arrangements. Commercially the album was a failure, as people wanted pop hits from Raittinen. But as a cult item the album's worth has only grown during the past five decades, and Svart Records are happy to bring it back on vinyl. This Anthology includes 17 tracks from the sixteen albums he recorded for the label. His music was very popular on the London Jazz dance scene in the late 80's and 90's and still is today having been championed by Gilles Peterson and many other DJ's. The song he wrote about the scene 'Ding Walls ' is included, this being the first time that track has ever been released on Vinyl. It takes a very special singer to take a well known Beatles song and re-interpret it with a Big Band arrangement, and make it his own. The first album by Nina Simone was recorded for the Bethlehem label in late 1957 and released in February 1959. It contains the biggest hit that Bethlehem Records had during its existence, the Gershwin ballad "I Loves You, Porgy". It also contains the song "My Baby Just Cares For Me", which became a hit in the mid 80's generated by an animated music video heavily played on MTV. Nina Simone was paid a one-time $3,000 for the royalties for the recording.
