This fall, trumpeter and composer Josef Leimberg will launch his debut full-length Astral Progressions. It also continues the momentum Leimberg achieved on the Kendrick Lamar Grammy Award winning album To Pimp A Butterfly. A hybrid state of jazz fusion, world music, R&B and golden era hip hop instrumentalism. Josef Leimberg has created a rich tapestry of sound that fits right in with the resurgence of progressive music in the 2010’s, launching out on his own terms after an impressive career of guest work. Leimberg gained a unique level of traction with his work on the multiple Grammy Award winning Kendrick Lamar LP To Pimp A Butterfly. Credited under the LoveDragon moniker with Terrace Martin, his time with To Pimp A Butterfly only represents a small fragment of his accomplishments. His collaborative resume over the decades is astounding, consisting of production, writing and feature credits with Snoop Dogg, Erykah Badu, Robin Thicke, Shafiq Husayn, Funkadelic, Freestyle Fellowship, Dr. Dre, Murs, King Tee, Suga Free, Saafir and Busdriver. These connections have undoubtedly spread life all over Astral Progressions. Leimberg’s debut album features an array of innovators and game changers in modern progressive music. Kamasi Washington, Bilal, Georgia Anne Muldrow, Kurupt, Terrace Martin and Miguel Atwood Ferguson are just a small list of the brilliant minds that make the Astral Progressions outing special. Many of the featured artists became with the LP through world renowned creator Shafiq Husayn. Leimberg would connect with various musicians associated to his camp through studio recordings, gigging and rehearsals, building on his compositions in a very organic and social way. Kurupt connects with Astral Progression’s cosmic message unlike anything else he’s done before, lending his verbal talents over a cosmic west coast flavor. Goergia Anne Muldrow and Bilal add considerable weight as well, taking direction into spiritually tinged fusions of R&B and soul. The ending track pays special homage to Leimberg’s mother, including a recording of her speaking about the complexities of life and where we all fit into the bigger picture of this universe. To describe this record in full would take volumes of thought, bridged under the vision of Leimberg in every note and measure. Leimberg takes the sonic power of Astral Progressions back to the origins of the ‘70s jazz fusion movement. Included is a superb Miles Davis cover of ‘Lonely Fire.’ Originally recorded and featured on the 1970s Miles Davis studio album Big Fun, Leimberg revamps the spiritually tinged piece with uptempo pocket driven drum work, flaring solo’s and a sense of heightened energy that transforms the chord arrangements of the original into something entirely new. Paul Livingston adds lush sitar, tambura and sarod, bringing the Indian influences shed on the original composition into the 21st century state of Leimberg’s vision. It’s a perfect summation of how organic, fluid and exotic the record is as a whole. The artwork and design packaging pulls back to the narrative of prolific album cover work that enhanced many of the world’s most celebrated jazz fusion albums. Artwork created by Tokio Aoyama, the vibrant color schemes intertwine into deeply interwoven symbols, coalescing to form a powerful story before a single note is even heard. Ray Barretto disliked his music being labelled 'Latin Jazz' - yet the album "La Cuna" is one of the most memorable of this genre, since it amalgamates the diverse moods of both Americas. In this album, the expertise of the legendary producer Creed Taylor is combined with an all-star ensemble and the supreme musicality of the skilful jazz percussionist Barretto to create a tightly-knit performance. The title-giving opening number sails along merrily with a salsa swing, but then the soaring flute melodies and the powerful piano improvisations cool down the Caribbean rhythms. How the players mingle driving patterns with delicate melodies to form beautiful song is demonstrated best in "Doloroso" and also in "Mambotango", whereby the latter exudes controlled coolness in the somewhat electric mood. John Tropea leans seemingly intentionally towards Santana and his art of guitar-playing, and this is further enhanced by the late Joe Farrell's phenomenal performance. A further tribute is paid to one of the greatest musicians ever to combine various styles and trends with a speeded-up version of Stevie Wonder's "Pastime Paradise". To conclude: if not Latin Jazz, then definitely Latin AND Jazz. This Speakers Corner production was manufactured 100% analogously, with the use of the analogue mastertape and analogue mastering. По словам саксофониста Джейка МакМерчи, "этот LP одновременно более эзотеричен и физически осязаем, и в то же время более тщательно проработан", сохраняя при этом фирменную смесь сильных мелодических идей, диких ритмических заморочек, жестких композиционных структур и свободных импровизаций. Трубач Пит Джадж соглашается: "Все это звучит более бесстрашно и уверенно, чем раньше" Особого внимания заслуживает неожиданное выступление легендарного композитора и музыканта Роберта Уайатта - восхитительный хорал без слов на томной "American Meccano", записанной в студии в Линкольншире, где в промежутках слышно пение птиц и проезжающие машины. Get The Blessing носят свое джазовое происхождение с легкостью и вызовом. A few decades ago, when the release of a George Benson album was an event for either jazz guitar or R&B vocal enthusiasts, his projects indeed lived up to the album title he employs here. While the new collection probably won't be an essential part of the Benson enthusiast's library, it's fun to see him trying to stay in the post-millennial urban groove hip with some of the younger generation's top songwriter/producers like Joshua Thompson (who's produced for O-Town, Aretha Franklin, and Babyface) and Joe. Those who wish he'd remember his prowess as a jazz guitarist have to content themselves with its general background capacity behind pleasant romantic vocal textures and easy grooving hip-hop shuffle grooves. Fortunately, Benson's in particularly fine voice, and most of the hooks are catchy from the get go. Conceptually, the best tunes are "Six Play" (which we soon realize is a love song to his six-string) and "Cell Phone", which postulates the idea that God and our late loved ones are accessible by wireless. There are a few stylistic deviations from the basic cool formula here, most notably the gospel-tinged "Whole Man", and the lush, gently exotic, flamenco-flavored soul tune "Strings of Love". The hope is that Benson's collaborations with the hipsters will expose his legendary talents to the kids who might otherwise shy away from the charms of an elder statesman. As a child in rural Fyledalen in southern Sweden, Magnason would compose songs on the piano and dreamed of being a concert pianist. She broke off her composition studies at the Gotland Composition School in 2004 in order to learn by doing, and has developed a strong, personal voice: jazz/pop music with classical elements, and whimsical lyrics. "Woman Travels Alone" follows her début album "Edda Magnason" (2010, Caprice) and "Goods" (2011, Adrian Recordings). It's difficult to meet an artist who matches Magnason’s gushing enthusiasm. And her dedication evidently made an impression on Per Fly, the director of "Waltz For Monica", the movie that changed her life. She started working on the album right after leaving the set almost two years ago, and her sudden fame has given her own career a significant boost. Without the success, she acknowledges humbly, she wouldn’t have had access to the resources – the top-level professionals – which she has now. The same goes for the audience. "Waltz For Monica" became the most viewed Swedish film in 2013, also scoring a Guldbagge (the Swedish equivalent of the Oscar statuette) for best actress. Рэнди Вестон, ныне старейший государственный деятель и один из немногих современных свидетелей и соавторов расцвета жесткого бопа, до сих пор гастролирует по Африке, Европе и Азии из Бруклина. Настоящий мультикультурный. Особенно местная музыка Марокко является кристаллизатором его мощных мазков; прекрасное восприятие звуков североафриканской мелодии и ритм-инструментов обогащало его на протяжении многих лет.

"Голубой Моисей" 1972 года был создан после семи лет без записей в студии Руди Ван Гелдера. Долгие путешествия через Северную Африку в Нигер и незнание американских рекорд-компаний стали причиной долгого перерыва. Только продюсер CTI Крид Тейлор (Creed Taylor) нашел уши Рэнди Вестона и смог заплатить за более широкий состав из 23 музыкантов и Дона Себески (Don Sebesky) в качестве аранжировщика.

Четыре темы - лучшая основа импровизации для солистов, львиную долю в которой занимает фортепиано Рэнди Вестона. Флейтовое движение является еще одним доминирующим, неудивительно, что Юбер Лоус руководил им.

Возможно, многие поклонники джаза в семидесятые годы перевернут страницы в музыкальных магазинах у буквы "W" Рэнди Вестона. Настало время исправить эту ошибку этим переизданием.

When Adderley formed this group, including Cannonball’s brother Nat Adderley (1931-2000) on cornet, and the superlative pianist Bobby Timmons (1935-1974). Timmons, then 23-years old, was already working with Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers, who enjoyed tremendous success with the pianist’s composition “Moanin’” and the album built around that tune. The Cannonball Adderley Quintet in San Francisco marked Adderley and Timmons’ first of only two collaborative recordings. Their second and final album together, Them Dirty Blues, was recorded on February 1, 1960 (that album introduced the tune “Work Song”, a composition by Nat Adderley which would become one of Cannonball’s greatest hits).

This switch from jazz instrumentalist to R&B/pop vocalist was successfully made.
