After releasing the heaviest album of their career with 2010's If Tomorrow The War (produced by Justin K Broadrick of Jesu/Godflesh), Constants' fifth studio album Pasiflora reveals a very different side of the band, this time with an emphasis on shoegaze and an almost retro-sensibility. Whispering vocal harmonies, walls of chorused synths and booming Peter Gabriel-esque drums coalesce into an album landing somewhere between M83 and Mew. Simply put, Pasiflora might just be their best and most creative release yet. Late last Summer, with nine years, four critically acclaimed albums and countless international tours under their belts, the members of Constants began to feel pigeonholed into the "post-metal/post-rock/post-whatever" scenes. So they set out to write an album that would redefine their already genre-bending sound from the outset, but it wasn't until drummer Rob Motes presented a batch of bedroom demos that the new album really began to take shape. The group scrapped 6 months and 10 songs worth of material to embrace the vibrant and textural sound that would become Pasiflora. "We aim to surprise people with every record and like to work outside of our own safe zone as much as possible. The challenge is to shape the result into a clear, consistent album," says guitarist/vocalist Will Benoit. "We're genuinely excited to have found something fresh at a point in our timeline where most bands become stagnant." The band were once described by Pitchfork as "simultaneously beautiful, jagged, atonal, and supremely melodic" and "Strobosphere" emerges at a time when the band's trailblazing sound has never been more relevant. Revered as one of the loudest and most intense live bands of all-time, they haven't lost any of their bite or their love of tone, dissonance, and melody. The first single "No Sense" darts, snaps and swirls with alternating snare cracks, atmospheric surges and dirty buzz, featuring Parker's distinctive vocals. Originally a member of The Gordons, Alister Parker formed NELSH BAILTER SPACE with former Clean drummer Hamish Kilgour in year 1987. Shortening the name to BAILTERSPACE, they eventually incorporated his former band mates from The Gordons, including Brent MacLachlan who has remained integral to the band since 1989. They won praise as "the Sonic Youth of the Southern Hemisphere" with several Melody Maker singles of the week. Relocating to New York brought about greater harmonic exploration whilst their Flying Nun and Matador releases established them as a distortion-led tour de force. After announcing a hiatus, the band never truly stopped working together, occasionally sneaking out to play an unusual show and building a stockpile of ideas, they way they always done. Fire reissues "White Trash Heroes", the final album from Archers of Loaf. Remastered by Bob Weston it features re-imagined cover art and new liner notes. Gatefold coloured vinyl. Archers of Loaf almost called it quits after All the Nations Airports due to the strain of touring and the rut of the album cycle (i.e., make record, make video, do interviews, tour, tour, tour; repeat) but decided they would make one more album and see how they felt after that process. They again enlisted the help of Brian Paulson to record the album that became White Trash Heroes. On this album, the band added keyboards to several songs as well as vocoder, and debuted the lead vocals of Matt Gentling on the track "I.N.S." "Banging on a Dead Drum" found all the members swapping instruments and featured some of the worst cowbell ever attempted. In the liner notes for Fire's reissue of the Archers' final album, Josh Modell says, "In hindsight, it's easy to read White Trash Heroes as both the stormy end to a legendary band and as the beginning of something else: Bachmann's next project, Crooked Fingers. We realize every couple months that after close to thirty years we are still and always will be a band. Still playing the "live" shows, thinking of ridiculous song titles, and speaking our own language in front of other people who could never quite understand. amusing each other, which is more important than any of the rest of it. So, sticking to the process that had worked for us all along, and lifted us to the lofty heights which we had scaled, we convened half-heartedly in Kurt's basement with no plan or idea of what, if anything, we hoped to accomplish in the 12 hours we'd made available to each other. Most importantly, we just wanted to hang out, and by hang out, I mean being in the same room together except for the times when personal lives decreed some of us must vacate the premises. As with our last record, the impossible-to-overrate I THINK THIS IS, Kurt managed to record the damn thing and play lead guitar at the same time, without compromising his integrity or ability. We learned the songs on the spot, which we combined with finishing the actual writing of the compositions, played them a couple times, and moved on.
