Sonny Clark's reputation as one of the finest jazz pianists of his era has grown in recent years, with many folks rediscovering his classic Blue Note recordings like 'Cool Struttin', 'Dial 'S' for Sonny', 'Leapin' and Lopin', as well as session work with Lee Morgan, Grant Green and others. Cut down by heroin addiction at age 31 in 1961, Clark's legacy continues to expand. The Time sessions were produced by the late Bob Shad, owner of Time and Mainstream Records. The reissue includes the original Time album re-mastered from the original tapes by Dave Donnelly, plus an extra disc of alternate takes previously unavailable on vinyl. Nat Hentoff wrote the original liner notes, included in the reissue package, and former New York Times critic Ben Ratliff contributes a new 3500-word essay. Saxophonist Winston 'Mankunku' Ngozi's 1968 masterpiece Yakhal'inkomo stands in the front rank of global jazz recordings. A certified jazz classic in South Africa, it has sold hundreds of thousands of copies and has never been out of print. But like so many other crucial South African jazz LPs, it was never released outside the country, and went unheard at the time by the wider world. This reissue is the first time that this truly essential jazz recording has been properly available outside South Africa. Mankunku's masterwork is one of those rare recordings whose audience saw at once that it embodied the spirit of the age. The title, 'Yakhal'inkomo', refers to the bellow made by a bull just before it is sacrificed, and the mourning cries of its fellow cattle as they see it struck down. For South African listeners, the reference was understood as a cry against the violence and brutality of the times, and an act of mourning for all those who were suffering under the barbarity of apartheid. Mankunku's horn spoke eloquently and profoundly for and to an oppressed people, and like Coltrane's A Love Supreme, the album became the musical touchstone for a generation. From today's historical vantage point, Yakhal'inkomo appears as not just an indispensable lost element of the international jazz canon, but as one of the towering cultural documents of its time. Fully licensed, and packaged with a new sleeve note by Francis Gooding and prevoiusly unpublished photographs from the Basil Breakey archive, this trail-blazing release on Jazzman allows Mankunku's classic work to gain its deserved place on the international stage. The first album by Nina Simone was recorded for the Bethlehem label in late 1957 and released in February 1959. It contains the biggest hit that Bethlehem Records had during its existence, the Gershwin ballad "I Loves You, Porgy". It also contains the song "My Baby Just Cares For Me", which became a hit in the mid 80's generated by an animated music video heavily played on MTV. Nina Simone was paid a one-time $3,000 for the royalties for the recording.

They are a Dutch quintet led by pianist Cees Slinger and were based as a resident band at the famous "Sheherazade" jazz- club in Amsterdam. They enjoyed quite a popularity. Playing all over Holland, accompanying expatriate American musicians on their visits to Amsterdam and even made a trip to the international jazz festival in Antibes on the French Riviera. The quintet stayed at the "Zade" for four years. Many guests appeared with it, notably Stan Getz, organist Lou Benneth and many other famous American musicians who were doing concerts in Holland and who took the opportunity to come to the "Zade" to jam with the Diamond Five members: practically all the musicians in Quincy Jones's ill-fated 'Free and Easy' band, Elvin Jones, Roy Eldridge, Jay Jay Johnson and many more. However, when the club closed its doors due to a shift in popular interest from jazz to rock music, the quintet disbanded soon after. The musicians are unique in their style, as Slinger plays sparse notes on his piano and tenor saxophonist Harry Verbeke solos are filled with a multitude of notes. Cees Smal playing different horns, while the bass and drum player support it by keeping it tight and bluesy. Highlights are "Johnny's Birthday", "Lutuli", by composer Ruud Bos and the final track "Monosyl, composed by Cees Smal are all included on their first full length album.
