Musica per commenti sonori is a cult series within the diverse world of Italian library music. In the late sixties and seventies, the small record label Costanza Records has published several releases precisely focusing on 'background music', including works of great composers such as Peppino De Luca, Roberto Pregadio, Franco Micalizzi, Vito Thomas, Giancarlo Thomas Puccio Roelens, Riccardo Luciani, and by the protagonists of this long-time due reissue: Sandro Brugnolini and Stefano Torossi. The two musicians, who had also worked together on the masterpiece Feelings (1974), have often collaborated and delivered some of the best Italian library music of all time. Musica per commenti sonori is certainly one of the most interesting. On the two equally split sides of this LP, the first for Torossi and the second for Brugnolini (but it seems that this partition was exclusively dictated by legal demands), there are twelve amazing tracks that will excite lovers of the wildest funk, producers in search of rare breaks, and those with a penchant for the psycho-beat atmospheres of the sixties. Among the most heated tracks featured on Torossi's side, we can't pass over the amazing Sweet-Beat, Interrupted (perhaps the best track of the album) and Repetition while Polyphony, Motuproprio and the closing track Flyer shine on Brugnolini's. Virtually impossible to find, even at astonishing prices, this reissue puts back into the market one of the best examples of 'The Italian Art of Library Music': a genre worldwide envied and collected

Black Marble release their second full-length, It's Immaterial. Their first for Ghostly, It's Immaterial follows up their highly acclaimed debut full-length A Different Arrangement (Hardly Art/October 30, 2012). Still featuring Stewart at the helm along with select collaborators as supplementation, the band's recent shift in locale from East Coast to West Coast lends a great deal to the overall feel of the new album. Pulling from the pre - "Simply Irresistible" days of early Robert Palmer and first wave pioneers such as Silicon Teens, Iron Curtain, Lives of Angels, and Solid Space, Black Marble dialed in on a clear understanding of its own specific sound, showcased most clearly on this new release with Stewart becoming more comfortable in being clear with what he's trying to say, both subjectively, in terms of the stories he's telling and the things he's willing to talk about, and objectively in terms of the lyrics and upfront vocals, while still experimenting with holding things back to produce a sound more claustrophobic and immediate.

Eastern tinged opener 'Superseded', 'I Can't Cry' and 17-minute 'House Of Mountains' are exemplary workouts whilst the garage-punk of 'Dolly Bug' takes a different tone as do 'Golden Walks Of London' and 'Queen Of May' which have more traditional British influences. Playing many instruments on the record, Nick continues here to work with his live band with Andy Ward on the drums, Adrian Shaw on bass and guest second guitarist Bari Watts returns (tracks 6 & 12)

The first disc’s a kind of best-of, but we just stuck to the more electronic stuff for this - there’s so many different sounds going on in Arab Strap albums, so we wanted to make it a more coherent whole. “The second disc’s filled with rarities from EPs and b-sides and out-takes and stuff, so there’s some louder rock stuff on there. I think all of these songs could’ve been on the albums they were recorded for, but sometimes you’re trying to tell a story and they just don’t fit. This disc is more live drums and rock-y too, so anyone looking for the noise should hopefully be satisfied.

Among all the aliases used by the great Piero Umiliani, M. Zalla is perhaps his richest and surprisingly multifarious: mainly used to produce experimental records that had little commercial appeal, this 'nom de plume' (along with Moggi) is tied to memorable episodes of his career, releases such as Problemi d'oggi (literally Today's Problems), Mondo inquieto (i.e. An Unsettling World), and also Suspense, now reissued by Schema Records. And if titles such as those mentioned above may somehow disguise the musical content (electronic music, by the way), Suspense perfectly anticipates what you will hear in its seventeen songs. A full-black front cover, the title written with yellow coloured typeface (it couldn't be any different) for an album that promises tension, gloomy atmospheres, mystery and, needless to say, suspense elements that convey anxiety and distress. Thanks to the clever use of Moog and keyboards, combined with magnificent orchestral arrangements, the tracks rapidly flow one after another in a crescendo that leaves you breathless, to cite the title of one of the best tracks. And, speaking about the titles of the tracks, what better way to introduce this reissue to the public other than quoting Suspense notturna, Paura sul fondo, Killer, Inquieto, Suspense angosciosa, Evasione notturna and my favourite one, Suspense atomica. A treat for your ears, and another fundamental piece to reconstruct the story of a Master of Italian music. Lean back in your chair and turn off the light..

Recorded with the 3-D depth of analogue but there's less geek and more funk;
more Mod than Modular in the new album's tailored, minimalist design. Stephen Mallinder's vocals are a surreal joy, smeared with effects and electronics as they change, chant and shift around the jump-cut lyrics. The opening trio of lpha Omega', tupid' (Mallinder in a new mutant funk-falsetto) and clockwork' sets up White Glue with the crisp crack and thud of sequenced rhythms and lush synthesizers. Dirty' slams into a compelling funk beat with a bristling guitar riff courtesy of Julie Campbell (LoneLady). Mallinder delivers one of the most memorable vocals of his career - venting, sliding and punching through the layers of noise with real urgency and bile. He employs his voice-instrument to more measured effect on top' but it's no less hypnotic - a feverish guilt-mantra of out-of-control consumerism. The white-light-techno-rush, triggered synths and chopped-up, multi-layered vocals of Real Life' is followed by Days' which slowly loops in and then flicks off the safety catch with heavy bass and moody synth lines. Superset' is a late highlight as the band coax the rhythm into life before hitting hard with a lovely, deep groove. Colliding' is the spacey Krautrock closer, a beautiful, nuanced semi-instrumental song which exits with dreamy, abstract vocoder sounds and ambient synths.

WIFE is the solo electronic music project of multi-instrumentalist producer and singer James Kelly, also known as the mastermind behind acclaimed post-black metal band ALTAR OF PLAGUES. Debuting with the “Stoic” EP in 2012, WIFE would immediately sign with respected electronic music label Tri-Angle Records (The Haxan Cloak, Evian Christ, Clams Casino etc.) for WIFE’s debut LP “What’s Between” in 2014 (which was co-produced by The Haxan Cloak respectively). “What’s Between” saw Kelly incorporate more singer-songwriter elements into the WIFE sound and brought more awareness to Kelly as a prospect within the electronic music scene alongside his aforementioned peers. With the new WIFE EP “Standard Nature” to be released via Profound Lore Records on limited edition 12” MLP, Compact Disc, Kelly has created a bridge between the singer-song writer leanings of “What’s Between” and the more experimental aura of the “Stoic” EP. The result is some of the best produced WIFE material yet with a heavier, more intense sound crafted through layers of electronics, samples, beats, and vocals. “Standard Nature” explores themes relating to Kelly’s time spent as an environmental researcher. The artwork, created by renowned photographer Daniel Sannwald who has done album covers for such artists as Miguel, Arca, Kelela, and M.I.A., depicts a machine reflecting a rainforest, demonstrating the juxtaposition of nature and machine. But this is not an exercise in nostalgia, rather a journey that seeks to reframe Balearic music in the present moment by embracing that "anything goes" spirit via the avant-garde of Finis Africae's "Managua", rare classics like the Arabic pop funk of Ahmed Fakroun's "Nisyan" and Cameroonian poetry of Francis Bebey's "Forest Nativity", with the proto ambient house of Spooky's "Orange Coloured Liquid" and modern productions like Dominique Dumont's "Comme Ça", Andras's "Gold Coast" and Mark Barrott's "Deep Water". Balearic in its truest form is all these things and much more, it's cosmopolitan and countercultural, international yet wholly specific to a singular place on Earth. It lights upon and encapsulates all the evocative beauty of Ibiza, the sounds themselves matching the color palette of the island. The red dirt hills and the white sands, the pink blooms of almond trees and the electric blue of the water surrounding Es Vedrà, the raw beauty of Ibiza is all here. At its root, Balearic music is always experiential. Few would challenge the claim that the 1960s and 70s have been the most fertile two decades in the history of popular music ever - a period which, regardless of genre, laid the foundations for everything that has followed. What is more, this period was so fertile that the speed with which tastes changed left a colossal amount of incredible music to gather dust - perhaps most famously a profusion of funk, soul and jazz. It was a musical legacy that lay mouldering until the rise of sampling in late 80s hip-hop precipitated a mad scramble for lost crates and suddenly, the music that became known as 'rare groove' - for obvious reasons (it was rare and very groovy) - experienced a phoenix-like rebirth. A quarter of a century on and a million funk, soul, jazz-funk and 'rare groove' compilations, re-presses and re-releases later, you'd think that cupboard was bare and yet, even now, there are gems to be found. PT is re-releasing the rarest of cuts that often were originally only limited runs or private pressings and new compilation Down & Wired is just such a collection. Always soulful, this features everything from mod groovers and northern stompers, to funky bumps and latin heaters. Formed in 2015, Vanishing Twin came together to make an exploratory record that marries oblique English pop with a palette of arkestral sounds. Having previously released a string of conceptual cassettes under the name Orlando, founder Cathy Lucas named the group after her vanishing twin, an identical sister absorbed in utero, when they were both still a cluster of cells. Enlisting the help of producer Malcolm Catto (Heliocentrics, DJ Shadow, The Gaslamp Killer) the band began work at his London studio, Quatermass Sound Lab, last spring. Recording the basis for eight tracks, they blended structure and improvisation in pop songs that describe a personal mythology through the adventures of Lucas’ vanished twin. Drawing on sounds outside of the usual pop vocabulary, the group used forgotten drum machines, home-made electronics, vibraphones, tablas, and harp to invoke the esoteric psychedelia of lost soundtracks, radiophonic experiments and minimal music orchestras. In a studio that Catto built for maximum atmosphere and minimum interfere, and crammed with obscure vintage equipment, he brought his own distinctive sonics to the table, informed by outsider jazz, Italian library music and ethnographic field recordings. The band has previously been championed by the likes of Gilles Peterson and the Quietus. They played widely in 2015 presenting an immersive show that is equal parts crafted sound and improvised delirium. Vanishing Twin is made up of singer Cathy Lucas (Innerspace Orchestra), drummer Valentina Magaletti (Raime, Tomaga, Uuuu, Neon Neon), bassist Susumu Mukai (Zongamin, Floating Points), library music head Phil M.F.U. (Man From Uranus, Broadcast) on strange sounds, and film maker and visual artist Elliott Arndt on flute and percussion.

Seven Impale's debut album, "City of the Sun", was very well received by the prog audience over the world, and in the year poll of 2014 at Progarchives.com, the album got ranked as the 7th best that year. So, in spring 2016, Seven Impale teamed up again with producer Iver Sandøy (produced Enslaved, Krakow etc.) in Solslottet Studio to record the follow up. The band has grown a lot since the debut, without loosing any of their youthful energy. "Contrapasso" consists of nine highly varied and complex tracks expanding upon the unique sound Seven Impale started investigating on "City of the Sun", but..... they've gone much further this time. On "Contrapasso" you find a band thar are more daring, experimental and complex. Again, they touch upon the harder soundscapes as well as including more catchy and upbeat tracks, but on this album everything goes one step further. Visiting places where no band has been before, with "Contrapasso" Seven Impale pay no heed to genre boundaries. Melding melody, experimentation, dramatics, atmosphere and contrasting rythms, with "Contrapasso", Seven Impale has created an essential album for any fan of progressive rock!
