From the dance hall to dancehall, here Balkan Beat Box perhaps delve deeper into their reggae influences than recent offerings. Always a part of their bass-heavy sound, it’s far more overt than on previous efforts. Both in the vocals of Tomer Yosef and the rhythms, that’s where this album lies. Successfully? To a point. Where it suffers a little is that it sounds a little watered down compared to more hardcore Jamaican takes. If one takes the time to really dive into the deepest recesses of dancehall, Shout It Out is left for dust. Is that a problem? Perhaps not: as an introduction to a genre or a gateway to that drug of choice, the record is just fine. And it does gleefully grasp influences from the Middle East and Mediterranean that give it a degree of individuality. A track like ‘I Trusted U‘ throws in any number of elements from acoustic guitar, sleek but powerful horns to rough beats and electronic squeaks. Underneath the distinct reggae meter of the vocal, that mix is pretty enchanting. More so than when matters are a touch conservative. Balkan Beat Box formed in the hotbed of Brooklyn but equally call Israel home and plunder musical traditions from all points in between. It’s world music in the truest sense. Not of the Later…with Jools Holland variety but in the sense that it is utterly without borders. The brass sound from the Balkan states tossed through the mixer with West Indian dub with admirable commitment. In many ways, they’re the quintessential 21st-century band. The global marketplace being served by the global creators. Certainly highly danceable and lively stuff across all 12 tracks. There’s an exotic feel when listened to through homegrown ears but it is nigh impossible not to wish things were pushed further. Harder, deeper, funkier, more…authentic. Whilst on paper they are a record executive’s wet dream, the sum is merely the parts, no more, no less. All a little art school and hip, with all the pluses and minuses that entails. All that said, it is a jolly romp. Summery and lively, honking and hip-swinging. An urban melting pot pointing to a melange of cultures. Exactly what it says on the tin I suppose. No danger of the trades description act being invoked. Or health and safety being infringed. Which is perhaps its shortcoming. Fun but no danger or real edge. Liset Alea has the name of chance. Chance that is tossed in the air like the roll of dice, following her footsteps like destiny brimming with surprises and unexpected possibilities. She has lived a thousand lives: born in Havana to an impulsive country man who was working in Fidel's kitchen and from whom he often stole the occasional piece of meat for the family and a literature major mother who has published some of her erotic poetry. At an early age, she already mastered the art of escape, the immigrant's task of learning how to leave behind one's home, family, friends, language, comforts and survive in an unfamiliar place. At 15 she begins to study the voice with America Crespo, a Cuban opera legend known as the Callas of Cuba. In order to pay for her lessons, she cleans homes on the weekend with her mother. She also studies Musical Theater at Miami's New World School of the Arts. Then She moves to New York, a waitress by night, she enters the New School Jazz Conservatory for Vocal Jazz and buys her first guitar. She becomes the front woman of the electronic band Etro Anime, cowrites their first album which is released through V2. After witnessing the Trade Center fall before her eyes, she decides it's time to leave the United States and moves to Amsterdam with the band. They embark upon a tour supporting Kosheen and later Llorca where she meets Alexkid with whom she writes and records 'Come with Me' on his Mint' album. Come with Me' becomes an instant electro club and radio hit and she joins Alexkid's band for a 46 dates European tour. Seduced by the European way of life, she settles in London for a while, travels to Milan, Athens, Madrid, Berlin for songwriting sessions, many of these collaborations entered the charts in their respective country. In 2012, she decides that Paris will be her new home' and from then on will be touring extensively with Nouvelle Vague as a lead vocalist, with Yasmine Hamdan and Elodie Frégé (a chanson française major figure for whom she also co-writes) as an instrumentalist (bass, percussions, guitar). While not on the road she starts working on what will become Heart-Headed', her new album co-produced with Marc Collin. Months in the making, HeartHeaded' displays a balance of craft and emotion and exhibits the refined craftsmanship of her writing. Her voice, reminiscent at times of Jennifer Charles (Elysian Fields), Marianne Faithfull or even a Cuban Lana del Rey, is set against string and flute arrangements, vintage synthesizers and urgent guitars. The first single Hunter & Tiger', heralds Heart-Headed' as an album that comes straight from the heart but remains grounded in the early Rock'n'Roll era echoing Wanda Jackson's Hard Headed woman. After releasing their own debut record in 2014 the Hamburg based group Sky Walking formed by Peter Kersten, Christian Naujoks and Richard von der Schulenburg now celebrates the launch of their self-titled label. By bringing together an international line-up of artists mostly associated with the new and experimental music scenes in cities like Hamburg, Berlin and New York Sky Walking not only establishes a link between different locations and their specific (local) scenes – with the Golden Pudel Club in Hamburg somehow functioning as a Bermuda triangle – but also between different generations of artists from these scenes. By choosing Sergei Tcherepnin’s “Queer 1” as the first track on 41'36'', as the record is simply called, indicating the length of the album in John Cage style, the compilation not just draws on the legacy of early modular synthesizers (his uncle invented the “Serge”), but also – in a manifesto like way – points out the hybrid and genre-bending approach many of the artists on this record share. The ten tracks on the record are characterized by an openness towards improvisation and collaboration as well as an experimental attitude towards technology. The outcome is sometimes weird and nerdy, sometimes playful and humorous – never taking either the music categories “new” or “experimental” too seriously. Konrad Sprenger for example, featured with the track “Distain”, invented a robotic multi-channel electric guitar, which uses the strings as frequency generators. It is tuned and set into motion by various electronically controlled mechanical movements. An even more performative quality has the Black Metal influenced duo Misanthrope CA, whose members Robert Kulisek and David Lieske prefer to play their dark and drony ambient tracks in neoprene suits. Jazz influences can be heard both in the fully improvised, cartoon-like piece by Sky Walking themselves and the filmic quality of Philipp Sollman’s and John Gürtler’s collaboration in “Gegen die Zeit”. While these two tracks were produced in the studio, Eve Essex and Dan Fox as well as Nowerk (F#X and Christian Naujoks) work with different means of live-recording in their collaborative projects. Rather mysterious appearances are the ones by Keller G and Gebrochene Beine. Whereas the latter mixes broken beats with a saxophone going wild, the first offers a dark and atmospheric, slightly uncanny soundscape. In-between longtime resident at Golden Pudel Club Nika Son takes us on a tense-ridden sonic journey with her track “Drissk”, purposefully paying tribute to the grand dames of the synthesizer. The cover is another hard-to-categorize element of this new release featuring a sketch of an alien-like two part cyber-ceramic sculpture including motion-, light-, audio- and temperature-responsive sensors by artist duo Amy Lien and Enzo Camacho. It thereby echoes the blurred boundaries between the auditive and the visual, for a perspective shared by most of the artists represented on Sky Walking, as well as their roots in the 1960s and the graphic scores that since then have become an art form in its own right.
