Likewise, the flaming red, the furious, the deeply dark, sometimes appears only as a hint or as a brief change of musical perspective. Textor & Renz have a sound that finds the magic in a single note or in a simple sentence and makes it shine. They seem to be strangers at home and at home in the stranger. I'll be honest: this compilation came out 14 years ago, and I still don't recognize the titles of 60% of these songs, despite drumming on all but one of them. You think Alan Alda remembers every M*A*S*H episode? I'm sure he can give a scene-by-scene breakdown of the show's now-legendary final installment ("Goodbye, Farewell and Amen") and yet have no memory whatsoever of the episode where they help an injured cow give birth ("The Birthday Girls"). It doesn't mean that one episode is better than the other. ok. this argument doesn't hold water, and I can see that now. The songs on Cup of Sand may not have found homes on our studio albums, but that doesn't mean they are unworthy of your time. Sure, a few didn't make the grade, but most of these songs were recorded specifically for compilations, one-off 7"s, EPs, and soundtracks. "With Bells On"-a song I wrote the bulk of-was left off 1997's Indoor Living in an effort by the others to keep me from buying a new motocross bike with the publishing money I'd have received. I cover this in much greater detail in my upcoming memoir, Wrongs I've Endured (PenguinLite). This marks the first time Cup of Sand has been released on vinyl. We've even added three extra songs that weren't on the original album. This was done to give fans something special, but also to help us realize our dream of one day releasing a three-LP set that somehow has eight fewer songs than Sandinista! This translucent blue 12" includes "Blue Bucket of Gold" on one side, and a cover of Drake's "Hotline Bling" featuring Gallant on Side B. Released in March 2015, Carrie & Lowell is perhaps Sufjan's bleakest album, tracing the songwriter's struggle with grief and depression following the sudden death of his mother. To promote the album, Sufjan set out on an extensive worldwide tour, playing almost 100 concerts performing almost exclusively songs from the new record. The show, which was designed by Marc Janowitz, incorporated an expansive lighting display and cathedral-like LED columns featuring home videos shot by Sufjan's maternal grandfather, Nick Marabeas. Much of this vintage footage highlights family birthdays, graduations, and weddings of Carrie and her siblings from th e late 1940s through the early 1970s, lending the performances the emotional arc of a memorial, celebrating Carrie's life and meditating on her death with a sweeping transcendence that gave testament to Sufjan's central thesis of mourning: that in spite of death, we must go on living in fullness and joy. Daybreak tends to creep up on you. Emerging from starry darkness, the sun wobbles at first but proceeds on its scheduled arc. You can't help but wonder if it ever looks back in disbelief, or regret. This feeling of self-reflection-of looking back to see how far you've come-is precisely the sentiment of Thawing Dawn, the first solo record from A. Savage, released on Dull Tools. The songs on Thawing Dawn form a guided tour through the romantic environs of A. Savage's mirrored mind. While some were written recently, other tunes were penned over the past decade. For one reason or another, these compositions didn't land with any of Savage's other groups, and instead are presented now as a distinct collection. Reflecting back, Savage says, "Once I realized I had a small body of work that didn't fit anywhere else, I started to examine the commonalities: What's the common denominator of all this and how I can expand on it?" Savage is best known as the frontman for Parquet Courts, a duty split with fellow Texan Austin Brown. Their last record, Human Performance, delved into the emotional wreckage of a broken heart, to critical acclaim. But with Thawing Dawn, it's clear that Savage has matured. While assembling the record, he fell in love. Now, for the first time, we hear songs about being on the inside of love.
