Reissue. The long-awaited eighth Satyricon album was released back on September of 2013 and it took many fans by surprise. Five years after The Age of Nero, it was obvious that the band spent time and put some deeper thoughts into songwriting, forging an album that is by no means proper black metal, or even the powerful black n’ roll of their three previous offerings. Some may dub it lifeless and numb while some others will be taken by its bleak and darkened aura. One thing’s for sure, the band took on a real challenge and came up with a very interesting result that certainly deserves attention. Let’s see why. ‘Voice of Shadows’ sets the tone of Satyricon with a slow, repetitive part that draws out a folky, Nordic feeling of grandeur, a solemn introduction for the track that follows. ‘Tro Og Kraft’ is a remarkable piece of music, a mostly mid-paced song with dark and sullen arpeggiated guitar riffs that creep up behind Frost’s thunderous pounding of the drums. Even though the album unveils itself very slowly, it is apparent that Satyr has experimented more with the guitars, constantly drifting around sections and soundscapes and creating really nice and captivating sounds and harmonies, with equally interesting vocal lines on top. ‘Our World, It Rumbles Tonight’ is another solid track, significantly quicker in tempo, fastened with scraping guitars and double bass drums that lead to an imposing chorus, as melancholic and ominous as the guitar chords that underlie it—the underscoring synths add an even more enchanting and epic atmosphere. This dark night wind rumble is soon replaced by the swaying flame that drives every beastly instinct to battle. Such is the momentum of ‘Nocturnal Flare’, which after a sluggish introduction attacks with a sharp blackened riff and Satyr’s grim snarl. This once somber trek has now turned into a nighttime expedition of the North. The next track ‘Phoenix’ it is where the controversy starts. While it remains a decent song and Sivert Høyem executes his vocals greatly, I humbly submit that such an experiment is not a fitting addition to a Satyricon album and certainly not to the overall legacy of the band. While it’s the most memorable number, it surely does not do much for the consistency of the album. The same thing happens with ‘Nekrohaven’ as well. I understand that they need a great live song with a good sing-along chorus but they already did that with ‘K.I.N.G.’ and ‘Fuel for Hatred’, and in a better way. ‘Nekrohaven’ may work perfectly in a live situation but as a studio cut, it seems rather forced and uninspired. Generally, Satyricon sees the band’s proclivity for musical exploration and evolution leading them to yet another musical path: a turn toward a more an ambient and gloomy black metal facet with relatively slow tempos. The songwriting is a combination of the simplistic, yet effective riffing they have already embraced with their latest releases and the atmosphere of the past. The changes are frequent, from tremolo picked guitar riffs to non-distorted chord progressions and back to a powerful chorus; the vocals too, alternate between harsh barks and spoken words but there is always a balance and every transition happens naturally. However, the atmospheric parts, especially the clean guitar interludes, are rarely supplemented by the drums, mostly because Frost’s approach is strictly limited to continuous double bass and fast breaks. Satyr’s vocal approach is unique and distinctive with a cold-as-stone vocal delivery that serves exactly what each song calls for, although the ferocious and passionate Satyr of old is certainly missed. There is a reason that Satyricon chose this album to bear their name: it is highly representative of their modern sound. This represents another direction for the band and although it’s far from perfect, it exemplifies an honest, authentic effort driven by pure musical vision. The new PERIHEL series on Karlrecords kicks off with previously unreleased material by GRM member GUY REIBEL, one of the most enigmatic figures of 20th century's electronic avant-garde. Limited edition 180gr LP (500 items) incl. DL code and liner notes by REINHOLD FRIEDL (ZEITKRATZER). GUY REIBEL (born 1936) is one of the most enigmatic figures in the post-war electronic music scene. He started out with a double qualification: he first became an engineer and then studied composition with OLIVIER MESSIAEN in Paris, the teacher of KARLHEINZ STOCKHAUSEN, IANNIS XENAKIS, FRANCOIS BAYLE, to name just a few. PIERRE SCHAEFFER, the director of the GRM (GROUPE DE RECHERCHES MUSICALES at Radio France), very soon offered him to edit and work out the famous Solfège-3LP-Box that was the practical part of his theoretical manifest "Traité des objets musicaux" and to codirect the class for electroacoustic music at the National Music Conservatory. During that period REIBEL worked intensively in the studios of the GRM. He did not only compose some milestones of electronic music, he also developed a very music-based theory of electronic music: he included his ideas of musical gesture and game theory already in the sixties long before anybody else discussed those issues. Once a stoner band, nowadays Phased play a sort of heavy and leaden, but still groovy psychedelic doom – motor doom, as their former label boss fittingly baptized it. Six years into their last studio recording, the Swiss trio now releases «Aeon». Seven monoliths of down-tuned guitars, slow beats and a subtly threatening vocal treatment, that were recorded by Chris Sigdell (voice, guitar), Marko Lehtinen (drums) and Michael Greilinger (filling in on bass) at Helium Records in Basel. The album was mixed by Richard Whittaker in London and mastered by Greg Chandler in Birmingham. «Aeon» will be available as CD, LP and download by end of November 2015. Today’s Phased came to as a trio in 2001, morphing out of two earlier formations. The members have their roots in Sweden, Finland and Austria. Phased have released three albums before “Aeon”: «Music For Gentlemen» (2003) and the Elektrohasch classics «Medications» (2006) and «A Sort Of Spasmic Phlegm...» (2009). In 2013 Space Rock Productions released a double vinyl compilation. The band has played several European festivals of high renown, such as Stoned From The Underground, Up In Smoke or Doom Shall Rise and shared stages with bands like Mastodon, High On Fire, Orange Goblin and Spirit Caravan. PARTISAN is the brainchild of Cedric Goetgebuer, Ivo Debrabandere and Thijs Goethals. Having known one another for many years they began to work, play, create as a unit in 2013. In an era in which 'Psychedelia' can often mean merely a grab-bag of influences it can be a rarity to come across a band who are genuinely fixated on creating alternate realities for the listener. This is exactly how Stockholm's Josefin Öhrn + The Liberation view their incandescent art, and it's this sensibility that has led to the kaleidoscopic spendour of this debut full-length. The last year has seen a dramatic rise for The Liberation with their EP 'Diamond Waves' leading to shows in Sweden with Goat and Les Big Byrd, a nomination for a Swedish Grammy as best newcomer, and rapturously received appearances at festivals like Roskilde. 'Horse Dance' is a razorsharp collection of ditties that marry dreamlike radiance with hypnotic rhythmic drive, set alight by an experimental glow. It inhabits a realm in which a propulsive '60s-tinged pop song like 'Sunny Afternoon' can be elevated skyward with krautrock-tinged repetition, dub echo and analogue curlicues alike, and one in which a Broadcast-style mantra like 'You Have Arrived' can tap into a psychic lineage that stretches way back. Yet at all times their transcendental extrapolations are married to icy and enticing melodic flourishes, making for a revitalising clash between the chic and the transcendental, and a sound as biting as it is beatific. Those recordings - which combined the aggression of punk, the rhythm and texture of kraut rock, and the ambience of early 80's experimental noise (This Heat, Throbbing Gristle) - sound as fresh and relevant today. With the long standing past of TOMLAB releases from North American based artists it's a rare sight to see a band from Vienna, Austria in our roster - seemingly springing out of nowhere - yet with a rhizomatic network of side projects in music and art away from my current radar that is usually pointing on the other side of the ocean. Now, HEARTS HEARTS will be releasing their first wonderful album Young towards the end of the year (Dec 04 for continental EU, Jan 21 for all other countries). The band formed around charismatic lead singer David Österle is composed of 4 members with Daniel Hämmerle on guitar, Johannes Mandorfer on percussion and Peter Paul Aufreiter on bass and electronics. The album has catched me completely by surprise: Young puts very high stakes with a very mature songwriting, very contemporary in the stories told and the feelings induced in the larger context of personal politics facing the new societies of the West. HEARTS HEARTS have managed to produce a very personal album that does not so much relive the past but points into the unknown future. Eivør's second full-length album this year is a so-called split release, featuring the Faroese-spoken "Slør" and English-spoken "Bridges" in one great combined offer. The album is first released in the Faroes and Denmark, before internationally, but it has already received rave reviews in such respected music outlets as Gaffa. "Slør" (literal translation: veil) showcases a series of new compositions, sung in Eivør’s mother tongue, Faroese. "Slør," in this sense, follows up on "Bridges," released earlier this year, as a twinned version - although we're talking about two different albums, sung in two different languages, we're also talking about two closely-linked works of art. In connection with the split release, Eivør has also announced a European release tour this fall with a big Faroese album release concert, set for the 25th of October at the Nordic House. In terms of its style and mood, there is still a suitable distinction to be made; where "Bridges" is light and wistful, "Slør" is raw and reflecting. Where "Bridges" is inspired by homesickness, friendship and love, "Slør," on the other hand, ponders on separation, longing to belong and searching for freedom. "Like a bridal veil, "Slør" ultimately symbolizes both happiness and surrender," reflects Eivør and explains what led her to writing two albums during the same process. “While I was writing the songs, the texts came to me in both English and Faroese – like a reflection in the mirror.
