We’re in the midst of an occult revival, in large part because people are searching for meaning. As the esoteric scholar Erik Davis wrote, “We turn to psychedelics, the occult, meditation, not just as another form of ideology, but because they reflect something true about the situation we’re in.” Magic is something that can live in chaos and make use of chaos, and these are chaotic times. Jess Williamson’s Sorceress, her fourth album and second with Mexican Summer, arrives during this cultural moment. Fittingly, it addresses these issues via personal epiphany and offers revelation in the real sense of the word. Across eleven country western prayers and pop incantations, Williamson melds the magical with the day-to-day, and makes it feel universal. On the title track, a gorgeous fireside ballad that finds her accompanied by the chirps of cicadas, she sings “Yes, there’s a little magic in my hat / But I’m no sorceress.” The thing is, she certainly sounds like one. Sorceress is polished and assured and it hits immediately. The Texas singer and songwriter makes deeply felt songs that orbit around her powerful voice, a voice that’s strong and vulnerable, big-room flawless, quietly ecstatic, and next-to-you intimate. When she has something to say, even when it’s a kind of Dolly Parton whisper, you listen. Offering a deep-hued kaleidoscope of dusty ‘70s cinema, ‘90s country music, and breezy West Coast psychedelia, Sorceress weaves a woman’s wild love letters to a confusing present and uncertain future. The music from Mauritius in the 70s found on this compilation naturally evolved from this original sega, a music made by the creoles. Created at the crossroads of Afro-Malagasy, Western and Indian cultures, pop, soul and funk arrangements, syncopated ternary polyrhythms, saturated guitars, psychedelic organs and Creole vocals, this musical phenomenon is as incredible as a tropical flower in bloom. The Creoles are mostly descendants of slaves who were deported in mass in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries from Madagascar and the East African coast for the cultivation of spices and coffee and later sugar cane. On the margins of these hellish plantations was secretly created a music called tchiega, chéga or tsiega, a distant cousin of the blues.

As he lives at the foot of the Alps in the German town of Berchtesgaden, some 800 meters above sea level and quite a world away from hectic city life. It's "next level Bavaria", as the singer calls it. Last winter he was welcomed by three meters of snow outside his front door, but Tim Vantol nonetheless feels right at home. You can hear it in his music, and perhaps his friendly Bavarian neighbours may have had something to do with that. The music on "Better Days" is "next level" as well. The latest in a string of pearls the Dutchman has been threading for his dedicated fans over the last eleven years. Even so, the new record is sure to be the musician's most personal work yet. "My songs are always written from my own perspective, but at the same time I want them to be as open as possible", he says. And surely enough, opener "No More" features one of those typical Tim-Vantol-lines right away. "Brand new directions are waiting for you," he sings in that distinctive voice that sounds like it's tattooing your soul.
