Imitating Aeroplanes is the new project of Tord Overland Knudsen (The Wombats) and Marius Drogsas Hagen (Team Me) – a collective output tallying five albums, multi-million sales and streams, repeat Billboard charts, international play-listing and widespread acclaim, including a Norwegian Grammy Award and multiple NME / MTV Award nominations. On paper, it’s an impressive partnership, but this is one project more destined than designed. Marius and Tord have been playing and writing music together since childhood, recording their first demos to cassette circa ‘96. Expanded reissue and first-time vinyl release of Japanese musician Hisato Higuchi's startling debut. When "She" was self-released in 2003, Higuchi had been writing and performing his style of "Tokyo laborer's blues" for a decade. The delicate song textures of "She" capture the utter feeling of loneliness and a sleep-deprived mind staring off into a blurry urban night sky. The music is "assembled from pedaling shapes of wraithlike guitar, blasted, genderless vocals and thin films of digital electronics and fuzz," David Keenan wrote in The Wire at the time. Downloadcode / Ltd. Gebrüder Teichmann's third album, Lost On Earth, merges transcultural collaborations and electronic music between 90 and 130bpm. The album was recorded in a multitude of cities and countries including Zimbabwe, Sri Lanka, Mexico, Nigeria, Kenya, and Germany and features guest artists Abe Duque (NYC), MC Psychotek (Bulawayo), Wura Samba (Lagos), Santiago Rodrigues and Signal Deluxe (Mexico City), Sasha Perera (Berlin), Max Turner (Noland) and the Kibera based art collective Maasai Mbili. Crafted by jams and recording sessions round the globe, Lost On Earth captures the essence of a rough, pure, and direct mix, highlighting club, hip-hop, African influenced, and deep tracks. Brothers Andi and Hannes Teichmann, aka Gebrüder Teichmann, are electronic musicians, DJs, and cultural activists, and have been rooted in Berlin's techno underground and DIY-culture since the late nineties. The duo have performed at Berlin's premiere clubs including Berghain/Panorama Bar, WMF, Watergate, Bar25, and have hosted regular nights at Suicide Circus Berlin since 2009. Over the years the brothers have collaborated with numerous artists across a variety of genres. Collaborations have included hip hop, contemporary, traditional, and experimental music with collaborators including Ensemble Modern, Decoder Ensemble, Embryo, Joachim Irmler and Gudrun Gut, Foremost Poets, rRoxymore, Teknotika, Jahcoozi and Modeselektor, and their father, multi-instrumentalist Ulrich Teichmann. Andi and Hannes have put together several projects in cooperation with the Goethe-Institute, like Ten-Cities, BLNRB &
Soundcamps in Sri Lanka, Pakistan, and Mexico, and established the intercultural electro ensembles Karachi Files (Pakistan/Europe), BLNRB (Nairobi/Berlin), and Mondmaschine (Mexican/Central America/Europe). With their label Noland they are compressing this diversity. Their musical activities, from DJing, giving workshops, and playing live sets, have taken them to over 60 countries as far as Afghanistan, Honduras, Sibiria, and Angola. Home in Berlin, they've been curating several festivals, such as the "From Inside To Way Out" at HAU Hebbel Am Ufer, the African Music Convention 2014, and parts of the Worldtronics Festival at Haus der Kulturen der Welt. Lost On Earth marks the first proper studio album Gebrüder Teichmann since 2011's They Made Us Do It (FEST 042CD). Lost On Earth also features: Amman Mushtaq, Eviltapes, Daniel Goldaracena, Ammara Brown, Flexxo, Maasai Mbili, Oren Gerlitz, and Fred Britzger.

I fuckin’ packed the U-Haul up and drove the band to Chicago. I got to record an EP with my friends and one of my heroes in this, like, giant firehouse building in Chicago. The EP is this missing link between .STOMACHACHES. and Parachutes. It’s everything I wanted it to be. It’s fuckin’ awesome!”

Resurgam – meaning “I shall rise again” – is the hotly-anticipated sixth studio album from Fink: UK-born, Berlin-based founding singer-songwriter musician Fin Greenall, alongside long-time bandmates Tim Thornton (drums, guitar) and Guy Whittaker (bass). It continues an acclaimed and distinctly adventurous catalogue, from the sample-splicing debut Fresh Produce (2000), through to the beautifully heady expressions of their last album, Hard Believer (2014). Resurgam derives its title from a Latin inscription in a 900-year-old church in Greenall’s native Cornwall. Its vital, insistent spirit pulses through the entire album, which was recorded with ground-breaking producer Flood (PJ Harvey, U2, Foals, Warpaint, The Killers) at his Assault and Battery studios in North London. Its ten new tracks were created over two months, a relatively luxurious stretch of time compared to previous Fink albums, resulting in a collection that is both assertive and richly immersive. On the opening title number, Resurgam’s lyrics are deliberately stripped-back, but they also pack a powerful punch, along with a deliciously persuasive deep funk flow. There is revelation and redemption;
Fink’s positive conviction pervades even the darkest sentiments here. Day 22 deals with sobriety and temptation, spiked with Greenall’s characteristic observant wit (“the blood, sweat, tears taste so good”). The lead single, Cracks Appear delivers a headrush of melody, with warmth and candour. On the exquisitely bittersweet Word To The Wise, Greenall lingers over the final notes of a love affair, tenderly accompanied on the piano by Douglas Dare. Not Everything Was Better In The Past feels like a personal awakening, merging sharp reflections and poignant moods. A heavy, resonant bass underpins the production throughout, and a range of new elements are also added to the Fink mix, from Flood’s own vintage analogue synths, to sax (played by guest musician Martin Slattery) layered into the vivid atmospheres and skittering beats of This Isn’t a Mistake. The rhythm guitar hook of Godhead brings out a West African influence, and lends a mesmerising backdrop to Greenall’s rousing vocals. Resurgam is a bold new chapter;

This terrific album is usually filed with the "sunshine" tag on it and it is hard to think of a better way to describe the dazzlingly bright songs recorded in 1969 by this American band. The core of the group was formed by Roger and Wendy, an acoustic duo that was a regular performer at NYC's Greenwich Village scene of folk clubs. Two more members, Tom Pacheco and Sharon Alexander, joined them in Euphoria during their brief existence. The band signed to Heritage Records and recorded this fantastic self-titled debut, featuring songs mostly written by Tom Pacheco and led vocally by Roger and Wendy. Their music is built around radiant vocal harmonies and solid arrangements, echoing artists such as The Mamas &
The Papas, Free Design and The 5th Dimension, but with a distinctive lysergic edge. 'there Is Now', the opening track, is a beautiful example of the psych twist that eventually spiced up the strongest songs of the album, as so is ide The Magic Carpet'. On the other hand, ¶ucson' or ou Must Forget' are dreamy folk numbers that show the band's smoother side. The catchy 'calm Down' makes you wonder about Euphoria's commercial appeal if they had been strongly backed by promotional efforts... However, by the time the LP came out in 1969, this kind of folk-pop sound had become out of fashion and live performances with top selling artists such as Van Morrison, Iron Butterfly or Sly &

Etapp Kyle’s first full Ostgut Ton EP release sees the Ukrainian-born, Berlin-based Berghain resident emphasizing the connection between spaces, while avoiding Techno’s overt intergalactic clichés. By partially linking to his Continuum EP (Unterton, 2016), the results are four tracks of pristine, sci-fi minimalism, propelled by Ambient synths and percussive explosions in distant skies – more utopian than dystopian. Opener “Alpha” establishes the cosmic theme from the get go, with chord swells and a whirring, phasing spacewind panning across the stereo image. While a subdued kickdrum gets things started, it’s the rhythmic interplay between dynamic high-hats and halled-out rimshots that guide the track through space. From there, “Quantum” on A2 strips the voyage down to a glowing, unwavering arpeggiated synth line, interspersed with twisted, high-pitched bells and updated 909- esque snare patters. Etapp Kyle’s deep, bleepy minimalism continues with “Source” on the flipside, where morphing hats and an atmospheric two chord progression lay the foundation for an interlocking array of rhythms. On closer “Ritual”, things take a different turn entirely, as a dirge-like drone resounds across a colossal sonic expanse. At eight tracks long, Gqomtera' provides a comprehensive overview of the Sgubhu sound, with the aim of taking the listener on their own Durban Journey. "I wanted to show the uniqueness of my own style which I would describe as more musical", Emo Kid explains, "you can feel the music when you listen but it still hits hard with that Gqom flavour." That Gqom flavour, powered by hard, fast, uncompromising drums, provides a solid core from which everything else functions. Bright, shimmering trance synths feature on uturistic Gqom', while on nkwarini' vocalist Fawell skips over light, playful Sgubhu rhythms. There's also space for harder, deeper cuts like und Shaker', cut with a twinkling melody line, the charging pace and power of nsimbi Yase Dubane' and the anthemic sbambeki' featuring local crew TLC Fam. Capturing the raw, street sounds of his city, Emo Kid is the latest Durban artist to take the music global and with qomtera', put Sgubhu firmly on the map.

The band project Drums Off Chaos was one of the central and on-going projects of the recently deceased drummer Jaki Liebezeit (who is normally associated first and foremost with the Cologne-based band CAN). In the early 1980s he had initiated an - at first - loose collective of drummers, who created a rhythmic concept on the basis of simple, strictly binding codes that enabled expansive improvisations. Over the years the ensemble became smaller and refined its collaboration marked by repetitive patterns and their variation. You have to play monotonous,' a member of the audience had already told Liebezeit in the 1960s. He took this to heart and there was hardly any other formation where he could bring this concept to life as regularly and with as much inspiration as in Drums Off Chaos. During a development spanning more than three decades, this extra-ordinary band, which never saw itself as such, made numerous recordings but rarely any releases. However, in the last few months of his life Jaki Liebezeit, with colleagues Reiner Linke, Maf Retter and Manos Tsangaris, earmarked some tracks for imminent release on vinyl and CD - on different compilations. Liebezeit's death is all the more reason to go ahead with this plan

Their influences flow like a stream of innumerable genres to produce a pool of sound similar to current rock icons like Queens of the Stone Age, The Black Keys, and Rival Sons, while also taking care to include lashings of clever guitar riffs and vibrant Robert Plant-esque vocal lines. The band formed after a successful drunken jam night in a quiet village pub in Wiltshire, and what started out as an inconspicuous session, quickly birthed an ambitious group with the drive and determination to take the rock scene back to its glory days. Having already plied their trade in such venues as London’s 100 Club, the main stage at O2 Academy Liverpool, and Shepherd’s Bush Empire, as well as having been given airtime on BBC Radio 2, the sky really is the limit for this earnest group of youngsters. The band played the Camden Rocks Festival in June 2017 and will be playing (or will have played, depending on when you read this) The Wildfire Festival and Ramblin’ Man Fair as well. Loads more touring is on the horizon for the band in conjunction with the release of “Heavy Living”.
