North America's answer to the legendary UK C86 compilation Includes an 80+ page booklet with a comprehensive oral history of the American jangle pop scene and tons of photos and ephemera // Strum & Thrum: The American Jangle Underground 1983-1987 is the first volume of Captured Tracks' new venture into compilations - Excavations. Inspired by Pebbles, Killed By Death, Soul Jazz and Numero Group compilations, Excavations is a series dedicated to compiling forgotten music from the 1970s - 1990s that has a connection to Captured Tracks' sound and aesthetic. Much like the Cleaners from Venus, the Wake, and Saäda Bonaire reissues we've put out, Excavations releases will bridge the past to our current roster and showcase the kinds of sounds that inspire us. It makes sense that the first volume of Excavations is Strum & Thrum. As an American label, we've often wondered why British, Aussie, and Kiwi indie rock from the `80s has had the most influence on modern acts and the collector's market. Granted, the music released on Creation, Sarah, Cherry Red, Postcard, Flying Nun, et al. during that era was fantastic, but a parallel to this sound existed in the US and Canada as well. Outside of bands like R.E.M., the Rain Parade, the Dream Syndicate, and a few others, most of these bands received little attention from national or international press outlets and markets - unless they opted for a "big `80s" sound and signed to a major. The acts on this compilation are the antithesis of that, with a true DiY spirit that lead many of these bands to self-record and self-release within tiny local scenes in small cities and college towns across America. Though hardcore dominated the American underground at the time, the indie scene was no less vital and operated utilizing many of the distribution channels hardcore set up. The two genres may have sounded nothing alike, but the DiY ethos and dedication to community was the same_ But this isn't the story we're used to hearing. While noted underground archivist and compilation producer Johan Kugelberg has called the `80s the "Dark Ages" of indie rock, Strum & Thrum aims to shed light on this forgotten era of jangly, melodic rock music that emerged from the ashes of post punk and helped kick start the indie rock boom of the early `90s that continues to this day. Indeed, many artists featured on Strum & Thrum went on to be part of this boom - Archer Prewitt from the Sea & Cake, Jon Ginoli from Pansy Division, Ric Menck from Velvet Crush, Brent Rademaker from Beachwood Sparks, Barbara Manning, and more went on to be in well known bands in the `90s. This compilation is an essential listen for any fan of classic `80s indie bands like the Go-Betweens, Felt, the Church, the Bats, Shop Assistants, and the like. And if you're a fan of the early records Captured Tracks released by Beach Fossils, DIIV and Wild Nothing, you'll find a lot to love here as well. Spread across two LPs, Strum & Thrum includes an 80+ page booklet with an extensive oral history of the `80s indie scene, an introduction by Captured Tracks label head Mike Sniper, and tons of archival images and ephemera. At the heart of Christian Stadsgaard's solo project Vanity Productions is a voracious emotive charge that's forever tempered by an austere and self-disciplined approach to composition. His new album for Posh Isolation, the label and project that he authors with Loke Rahbek, is the most thoroughgoing realisation of the tendencies and processes captured in the guise of Vanity Productions to date. The album presents a suite of five pieces that veer surely yet subtly through a complimentary range of acousmatic environments.. Sometimes overtly, though often with a cryptic veneer, he modulates a central refrain across each piece that comes to engulf the stereo field with different intentions. Citing the influence of American minimalist composers, Stadsgaard has refigured some of the compositional practices towards his particular context and oeuvre. A medley of strings and electronics waver in and out of place on the opening piece, 'White Ribbons On The Ceiling,' introducing the careful preparation and treatment of sound as a means of articulating a profound though compassionate melancholy. The album is drenched in sorrow and seeks its expression with great economy. And it's around this detail that there's perhaps some slight indication of the album's turbulent personal context and the major life changes that underpin it. Stadsgaard's restraint proposes a wealth of wistful invocations. This control, once combined with the subdued presence of his penchant for glaring noise, is what organises 'But All Spiked' into the meditative and dynamic work that it is.

The wait is finally over! More than three decades after it’s original inception, Swedish cult death metal band Toxaemia will release its debut album. “Where Paths Divide” comes as a dark blessing for all old-school death metal fans that praised Toxaemia's two demos, one EP and one CD-sampler in the 90s. Now it’s time for a full dose of bonecrushing, chainsaw buzzing, gore gushing Old School Death Metal, as Toxaemia return with a new line-up, a renewed motivation and the same sick sound! Toxaemia have been around since January 1989, one of the pioneering bands of Swedish death metal. They have made some line-up changes but the core is still intact. In the three years between 1989 and 1992, the band managed to record two demos and two 7” EPs. Unfortunately, Toxaemia never released the second EP, since they played and released material until 1992 when, for various reasons, took a break. The reunion came in 2017. Initially, it was all just to have some laughs and play some music again. The band members took it all slow and started rehearsing a little bit. Gradually they started to gel again, musically. Some of the musicians had not touched their instruments since 1992 when they quit playing. They started rehearsals and played a few shows and festivals, before signing to Emanzipation and started recording their debut album. Now, the old Swedish death machine is ready to fire on all cylinders and make up for the lost time, with their debut opus “Where Paths Divide!"

It's also a work of wild exploration. PLASMA pulls together ideas from across the musical landscape. For an original of „All Or Nothing“ you have to dig deep into your pockets and even a Russian CD bootleg has its costs. That‘s over now, because Golden Core is now releasing a unique CD of the band, which contains the LP (remastered) and all recordings. In 1986 SUDDEN DEATH produced three tracks with Harris Johns in the Music Lab Studio, who also sat at the mixing desk on „All Or Nothing“. There were never any mangy rehearsal room demos on Sudden Death. They always produced at full throttle. Trendless, powerful Heavy Metal can‘t sound better!

1998 Performance Broadcast Recorded For The Storytellers Series In early 1998, Stevie Nicks was approached by Warner Music to release a solo career-spanning box set, to conclude her contract with Atlantic Records in the US. After the culmination of Fleetwood Mac s reunion tour, in which she had taken part, Stevie settled down in Los Angeles with close friends and colleagues to devise a track-list for the upcoming three-disc collection. Enchanted was released to critical acclaim on April 28, 1998, with liner notes by Nicks herself, as well as exclusive rare photographs, and pages from her journals. She supported the collection with a successful US tour. Fittingly, on 18th August 98, she performed a superb show for VH1 s Storytellers series whereby popular artists would relate the tales behind a number of their most popular compositions, in front of a small audience, and then, of course, perform the song in question. For Stevie s episode, fans were allowed to ask her questions too. Previously unreleased, this CD now features the full set Stevie Nicks performed that night, and with a set list that includes some of the girl s finest tunes, all played in arrangements unique to the event, this release will prove a delight for fans of this enduring performer, musician and writer.

We at FT have had the big pleasure to continue our collaboration with the brutalist rhythm explorer & Forest Limit resident Sofheso. Plenty had their brains scrambled by his 2.5hr ARCHIVE release in 2018 - ("the emotional impact is that of a solitary battering ram to the gut…” - ATTN magazine / "a staggering introduction to a mysterious talent" - The Quietus) and since then we’ve been pulling together yet more irresistibly ruff & spirited one-takes from his recent sessions. Juggernaut rhythms, frenzied vocal samples, machinegun drum programming greets us from track a.1 / ECSS, and the pressure is maintained for almost the entire record. Major bludgeoning damage is dealt on a.4 / ONJJ particularly, as chunks of subby utterance boil over into a nimble breakbeat. Moments of melodic release are spoon fed through the cracks & become euphoric - like a nourishing sip of something offered in the smoke of a 5am dancefloor. Across 53 minutes barely 4 bars are the same - always an unseen path is taken into a fresh rhythmic possibility. Sometimes it’s abrasive & chaotic. But our seasoned technician always finds the right addition or subtraction to make sense of the tumult, and discovers new levels of blown out/up POWER where others would be timidly reaching for the gain pot. Sofheso has been sharpening his tools since 2002 - the year of his first performance under this moniker - and it’s apparent from his new recordings and his euphoric live shows that he wields them with a rare & unconstrained intuition. He is using this 6th sense to shake rooms & bodies in his home city of Tokyo, and soon (COVID willing) also in the UK & Europe. We were lucky enough to get over to Japan this year to do a show with him in Tokyo’s Forest Limit as part of our tour. The recording of his performance at that show will be dubbed to tape and released as part of a special edition, along with the LP and a zine of sketches by Kan Togashi - the artist responsible for the album cover (and also the cover for ARCHIVE)

France chamber duo Snowdrops, formed in 2015 by Mathieu Gabry and Christine Ott, release their graceful debut album Volutes, an eloquent miniature symphony of strings, piano and the notoriously challenging Ondes Martenot instrument. Christine Ott has performed alongside celebrated film composer Yann Tiersen, longstanding UK alternative band (and reputable soundtrack composers) Tindersticks, and French post-rock experimentalists Oiseaux-Tempête, resulting in the breadth of musical knowledge and the acute, skillful sensitivity to compositional subtleties and sympathies evident in Volutes. Alongside their contribution of piano, strings, mellotron, electronics and the Ondes Martenot, for Volutes Gabry and Ott are joined by virtuosic viola player Anne Irène-Kempf. From a classical and baroque background, Kempf's extremely lively and spontaneous playing adds a special colour to the album. The duo draw from a unique combination of contemporary classical, jazz, electronic music and film score, and spent the first few years of their partnership composing essentially to picture. Most notably, this soundtrack work includes the score to Phuttiphong Aroonpheng's 2018 feature Manta Ray, which won the Lion Award for Best Film at the 2018 Venice Festival.

With basic tracking completed, further elements were added in his bedroom studio, from vintage synths and drum machines, to strings, Mellotron and percussion. Arrangements and song structure in some cases went through several iterations until they rang true to songwriter Dan Weltman's ears. Already with their debut, the band managed to gain a kind of cult factor within a very short time, and extensively demonstrated their kind of music live at the Summer Breeze Open Air and several shows. On "Lust To Lynch" the band has developed in terms of aggressiveness, depth and also lyrically, without losing a trace of agility and power. The three guys from Aalen simply have thrash in their blood, which brings tears of joy to the eyes of the denim cut-off and high top sneaker wearer. "Lust To Lynch" was recorded by themselves and mixed and mastered by Marcel Kühn at Clydefrog Studio. The famous cover artwork was created by Arda Taner.

Reykjavík maverick Henrik Björnsson is due to release 'Good Sick Fun', his eleventh album under the Singapore Sling project. Inspired by goth-rock, dub and big-band jazz on top of the usual fuzzed-out rock'n'roll touchstones that are seared into Henrik's work, the latest Singapore Sling full-length is as perversely hedonistic as they come - and that's not without competition by any means. An invitation to "rejoice in doing wrong", in Henrik's own words, 'Good Sick Fun' is the latest morbid and characteristically-depraved addition to a back-catalogue spanning nearly two decades from the cult Icelandic band. Arriving off the back of the 2019 'Killer Classics' LP, Henrik says of the new album: "Old rock'n'roll is the main influence on this record, as on most of my records. When I release a record it means rock'n'roll has saved my life, my mind and my soul once again. And it does that quite frequently. Sometimes I start running astray, getting sucked into pointless garbage and thinking it actually matters. Then I realize that it's absolute garbage and that nothing matters but rock'n'roll so I go and make a record instead."

So, what have you been doing in 2020? Tensions have mounted, turmoil has reigned and work emails have forever rung out with boilerplate platitudes as the world has ushered in a new decade in more uncomfortable and disquieting fashion than anyone could have imagined in January. Nonetheless, amidst such mental tumult Craig Clouse - the Austin-based sage of the aurally unclean also known as Shit & Shine - has been busily channelling the interface between the surroundings and his own wayward muse into 'Malibu Liquor Store' - a lockdown-birthed psychic landscape mapped out in the first half of this turbulent year. The only expectation any relatively well-adjusted person should have of Shit & Shine remains the unexpected at this stage, with Clouse having released well over thirty records on multiple labels in a storied, questing and uniformly invigorating catalogue - just as comfortable with both bloody-minded electronic assaults and noiserock-driven dirge, as adept at kraut-hammered rhythmic mantras as dancefloor-friendly abstraction. 'Malibu Liquor Store' is none of these things exactly yet simultaneously flirts cheerily and irreverently with all of them. Always shot through with gleeful humour, this is a sonic world that recognises neither boundaries nor common sense. Craig Clouse cares not for your definitions of psych or dance music, and he's never more comfortable than when transcending and annihilating both generic headspaces with casual ease and cheerful panache. Instead, these heat-damaged jams mark a spectral collision course between infectious glitch-heavy groove and an appropriately Texan acid-flashback aesthetic - a world in the last fifty years of culture are reflected and refracted back ad absurdum. Co-ordinates and reliable audial landmarks are rendered meaningless as the title cut comes on like a '60s Morricone chase sequence reassembled in new electronic shapes like lysergically-assisted Meccano. 'Rat Snake' sees the humid grooves of Can's 'Soon Over Babaluma' bludgeoned into delirious submission. 'Devil's Backbone' witnesses Buttholes-esque transgressions of the '80s beamed forward Terminator-style to a cyborg-ridden dystopia, and the glorious skeletal groove of album centrepiece 'Hillbilly Moonshine' meanwhile is nothing less than workout music for the damned - a relentless and pulsating soundtrack for a generation of ghouls mounting a legion of rowing machines along a metaphysical river Styx. The creation of 'Malibu Liquor Store' may just have helped Craig Clouse keep his sanity in 2020, even if it appears custom designed to help us lose our own.
