Emmanuel Pahud returns to music written for ‘The Flute King’ with these three concertos by Carl Philipp Emmanuel Bach (1714-88), who spent nearly 30 years on the musical staff at the court of Frederick the Great, a powerful monarch and a highly accomplished flautist. Pahud, the long-standing principal flautist of the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, is joined by Kammerakademie Potsdam, directed from the harpsichord by Trevor Pinnock. Several works by CPE Bach feature on Emmanuel Pahud’s Warner Classics album The Flute King, comprising music written for Frederick, which was released in 2011 to this response from International Record Review: “Pahud can equally lay claim to the title of 'The Flute King' … [He] demonstrates a flexibility of phrase that arises naturally from the architectonics of the music rather than being imposed on it by a 'personality'. Despite the modern flute, his ornamentation and articulation are thoroughly idiomatic and chime with his period-instrument collaborators' crispness of attack and cleanly expressive shifts in colour.” All cadenzas are by CPE Bach

André Navarra (1911–1988), together with Pierre Fournier and Maurice Gendron, was acknowledged as one of the “three great” French cellists who left their mark on the European concert life of their era. He was born in Biarritz, won first prizes at the age of 13 and 16, and gained early practical experience in chamber-music ensembles before celebrating his solo debut in 1931 with the Concerts Colonne. After a stupendous competition win in 1937 in Vienna he began an international career that was to last for more than three decades. In parallel, Navarra began teaching: starting in 1949 (until 1979) he was professor at the Paris Conservatoire; from 1953 he also taught at the Accademia in Siena and at the Vienna College of Music, and from 1958 to 1986 he was a member of the illustrious teaching team at the Nordwestdeutsche Musikakademie in Detmold, where his colleague on violin Tibor Varga taught. He can be heard playing with Varga on this 10-CD collection as well as on numerous studio and live recordings made at various times along the way of his remarkable career. (transl. JMBerridge)

Described in Gramophone as ‘one of the most needed and important recording projects in progress today’, this series has up until now featured the clavichord (on 27 discs), the tangent piano (7 discs) and the fortepiano (2 discs). It is therefore something of an occasion when Miklós Spányi for his Volume 37 chooses to perform on a harpsichord. In doing so he reminds us of C.P.E. Bach’s own advice to keyboard players to have both a clavichord and a harpsichord in order to play ‘all sorts of things alternating’ (‘allerley Sachen abwechselnd’). But the disc – which includes some of the composer’s earliest works – also features one of the very few, if not the only, compositions that Bach specifically dedicated to the harpsichord, namely the Sonata per il cembalo a 2 tastature. In it, Bach makes colourful use of the instrument by specifying various detailed and idiosyncratic harpsichord registrations. Spányi also performs two of the few fugues – in F and A major respectively –that Carl Philipp composed: besides the general shift in fashion away from intricate counterpoint to melodic simplicity, it is possible that he found father Johann Sebastian’s achievements in that particular genre too hard an act to follow…
