The London singer, songwriter, guitarist, pianist and producer moves in a musically creative intermediate realm of jazz, alternative pop, soul and gospel. Julia Biel manages to combine intellectual ambition and emotionality. Her voice reflects the experience of hope and privation, of grief and happiness. Julia Biel is not one of the great vocal acrobats, but her compositions are imbued with her unique, grandiose voice leading and her magical magic immediately captures the listener and never lets go. Recorded in her own studio, produced by her longtime partner Idris Rahman and mixed by Emre Ramazanoglu, the music is enchanting from the very first note. Born in England with British and German nationality and with South African roots, she accompanies herself on the black and white keyboard of the piano and at the same time fights against any polarizing black and white thinking. Her music creates soundscapes through which she wants to reach people emotionally. At the same time she confronts the listeners with her attitude, shakes them up, fights against injustice. "Because on the level of shared emotions, people can discover common ground," says Julia. "Skin colour, socialisation, political persuasion or any other social construct should not have any influence on our ability to understand the other person, to put ourselves in their place. Nor should anyone be allowed to be prejudiced, to deny someone the right to express human feelings in all their facets." Their songs are about confusion, pain, uncertainty, joy and sadness, permeated by touching poetry and the not always easy coping with everyday life. This dialectic, of melancholic vitality and tangible authenticity, gives her a very own artistic claim. Even if some names of great vocalists are repeatedly referred to in reference to Julia Biel: on "Black And White, Volume 1" she sets her own standards, which will certainly influence other singers.

It's album release time for this Madrid-based soul/jazz organ trio who have been burning up stages and festivals throughout 2019 and who have already had a successful single out on Rocafort Records. Beat Bronco Organ Trio have not rewritten the Hammond musical handbook, but they do what it says on the tin rather splendidly – a Road Trip that grooves, swings and sashays around the familiar but much loved funky jazz theme. Although it's impossible to listen to the album without summoning up the ghosts of Jimmies McGriff & Smith and the like, nearly all tracks here are originals and shout out personality, verve and respectful homage to the tradition. Featuring the usual leitmotifs: Shaftish film sountrack, lo-fi lounger, gospel-tinged toe-tapper, the hip shaker and much wah-wah frenesi, there's nothing not to like if the genre is your bag. The steaming horn section on "Hard Play" thickens the sauce à la JBs and the Meters, aided along by a unique orchestra of handclaps. Vocalist and guitarist Alberto Palacios Anaut storms in with "Hey Hey", an old Dave Bartholomew classic from New Orleans, just to remind us where Fats Domino and Ray Charles got it all from. Chip Wickham makes two welcome appearances on flute, adding an extra jazzy touch to "Squirtly" and "Electro Pi" – the latter a fabulous trippy, spacious head-nodder that demands in our opinion some kind of a wigged out drum'n'bass remix. Every track is clearly dominated by variations on the vintage keyboard, be it Hammond, Clavinet or Minimoog; all roads lead to that sexy, sacred sound. Spain is already prominent on the modern-day Funk map thanks to groups like The Sweet Vandals, Speak Low and Mighty Vamp – and it comes as no surprise that our hero trio featured at various times in all these bands. Gabri Casanova (keys), Lucas de Mulder (guitar, percussion) and Antonio "Pax" Alvarez (drums, percussion) have been busy reviving the funk gospel for some time now. Road Trip is an elegant culmination of their efforts in keeping alive a revered and timeless tradition that still today serves as a reference to where all the good stuff came from: The Church!

First released on digital formats back in 2016, and here now given a richly deserved full vinyl release, 'Holy Science', the debut outing from Amirtha Kidambi and her New York based quartet The Elder Ones, is a work of dazzling singularity. Delicately yet unashamedly divulging its complex network of influences at every turn, 'Holy Science' simultaneously disperses of boundary and limitation, emerging as an album steeped in tradition yet located firmly in the futuristic present. Amirtha Kidambi, the Elder Ones' leader, composer and vocalist, was a child of South Indian heritage, and she grew up immersed in the tradition of devotional singing, joining in with free-form, improvised Bhajans on regular Sundays. She began simultaneously accompanying her voice with the harmonium from the age of three. These formative experiences continued to instruct and merge with her ongoing musical explorations as she went on to study Classical music, all the while ingesting the Punk, R&B and Rap that surrounded her. A particularly significant discovery was that of free and avant jazz, and in particular the music of Alice and John Coltrane, in whom Kidambi found clear echoes and parallels with those Bhajans and Ragas of her earliest musical awakenings. All these influences collide on 'Holy Science', at times as explosive blasts of sky-opening thunder, at others as moments of soothing, meditative bliss. These holy bursts are enacted by Kidambi's assembled musicians and are given permission to explore the science of spiritual alchemy, plundering their individual and collective soul for the sake of musical expression, and all of the unpredictable and profound revelations such an approach might yield. 'Holy Science' is a work underpinned by traditions, be they the Bhajan spirituals, or the Jazz and Classical avant gardes, that are in their own manner, archetypal. But perhaps most importantly, all of these forms contain an inbuilt capacity for discovery and progression. Amirtha Kidambi's musical pathway has been defined by a studied determination to occupy this specific space, the unbounded realm of improvisation and exploration, summoning the acquired instruments of experience, knowledge, culture and tradition to unlock secrets of the past, present and future. The most cherished music is often remarked upon as having a timeless quality – ancient, modern and futuristic, all at once. And so it is with 'Holy Science'.

The first album by Nina Simone was recorded for the Bethlehem label in late 1957 and released in February 1959. It contains the biggest hit that Bethlehem Records had during its existence, the Gershwin ballad "I Loves You, Porgy". It also contains the song "My Baby Just Cares For Me", which became a hit in the mid 80's generated by an animated music video heavily played on MTV. Abner Jay is an extraordinary one-man-band with one of the deepest emotive voices ever recorded. "Man Walked On The Moon" features Abner material from two different periods. Side A opens with an early deep 1970's version of his signature song "I'm So Depressed," which has never before been reissued on LP. The hit is followed by four previously unreleased songs from the same period - "The Royal Palm" (a classic train song), "Old Black Joe," "I'm A Hard Working Man," and his paen to space travel, "Man Walked On The Moon." All are sung and played by Abner with his standard one man band set up - electric banjo, drums played by his feet, and harmonica. Side B of the LP features Abner's emotionally charged last recordings. These were made two months before Abner passed away, and here we find him pensively playing acoustic guitar and singing. The songs are incredibly emotional and not for the faint of heart. These mournful tracks were previously released on a Mississippi 10" EP back in 2011 ("Last Ole Minstrel Man") and is long out-of- print. This LP collects some of Abner's greatest work from across his career, all rare or previously unreleased classics! LP comes housed in an old school "tip on" jacket and includes a 20 page booklet with photos and a loving tribute to Abner Jay written by Jack Teague.
