Die Goldenen Zitronen (The Golden Lemons), born a punk band in 1980s Hamburg and having developed into a seminal art punk collective, present their new album. After 11 long-players and countless collaborations with artists such as Peaches, Wesley Willis (with whom the band toured the US), Chicks On Speed, Françoise Cactus (of Stereo Total), Mark Stewart (of The Pop Group), DJ Koze or Michaela Melián, »Flogging a Dead Frog« is their first release on Altin Village & Mine. »Flogging a Dead Frog« assembles instrumental and, for the first time, English reworkings of songs of their most recent albums. Far from being a complacent »Best of«, the album directly plugs into the band’s impressive body of work with the opener, ›Fan Without Fan‹, being a reworking of the most recent album’s final track, ›Wer Hier‹. »Flogging a Dead Frog«, then, unfolds a re-contextualization in two senses: For one, its instrumental tracks emphasize the fact that the band’s sound has always been much more than a musical accompaniment for the unrelenting social commentary of singer Schorsch Kamerun. Here, the album brings out the Goldie’s tremendous nomadism between punk, techno and krautrock, its dramaturgical condensations mirroring the diverse engagements of the six members in theater and film projects. On the other hand, in the English versions of songs such as ›If I Were A Sneaker‹, a song about European immigration policy, or ›The Investor‹, »Flogging a Dead Frog« proves a consequent re-adjustment of the band’s political scope, opening discourse on matters that have desastrously proven to not be exclusively pertinent to Germany. As is typical for the Goldene Zitronen, these two interventions – one concerning the band’s oeuvre, the other its environment – are inseparable and testament to their political aesthetics. HOLLY GOLIGHTLY IS BACK. With her first full band album since 2004's Slowly But Surely! ... Though the last decade has seen the London-born singer re-locate from the Medway delta to the southern state of Georgia, USA, she returned to Blighty late last year to record a new solo album at London's Gizzard Studios with Ed Deegan at the controls. Originally released in 1972, the record peaked at number 54 on the Billboard album chart in the USA. The Boston based band's first live album was recorded over two nights in April of 2 at the Cinderella Ballroom in Detroit, Michigan, and kind of set up things for the breakthrough success of their next album - especially the tracks "Serves You Right To Suffer" and "Looking For A Love" which enjoyed quite some radio airplay in the States. The live album itself charted for 26 weeks and was eventually certified Gold. Combining Chicago Blues and Classic Rock (and throwing in some Motown too), the J. Geils Band's raw energy seems to jump out of the speakers like a burning locomotive. One of the best live albums ever pressed on vinyl, the only complaint one could have is that the album is too short. Be assured that this rock 'n' roll onslaught is a blast from start to finish. Underground German kosmic rock band GAM recorded their sole record, Eisziet, in 1978 and then shelved it after the master tape disappeared. Comprised of echo-guitar pioneer Günter Schickert, guitarist Axel Struck, and drummer Michael Leske, GAM's record sat undiscovered and thought lost until The Crack in the Cosmic Egg authors Alan and Steven Freeman tracked down Günter, found out that he had a copy of the recording, and released it on CD on their label, Cosmic Egg, in 2004. Championed by Julian Cope, GAM wove echoed guitars and tripped-out vocals together over a tight rhythmic groove that still sounds current thirty odd years after their recording date. Günter, a veteran of the Berlin experimental and free jazz music scene, was a frequent visitor to the legendary German club/art space, Zodiac Free Arts Lab (founded by Conrad Schnitzler and Hans-Joachim Roedelius), where he encountered fellow German music pioneers and witnessed seminal live performances by now-lauded German bands. In 1974, prior to GAM, Günter self-released his first solo record, Samtvogel, which the Brain label reissued in 1975. Following work with Klaus Schulze, Günter recorded a second solo record, Uberfallig, on Sky Records in 1979.
