Эрнст Хфлигер - швейцарский оперный певец, тенор. В 1943 Хефлигер впервые выступил с партией Евангелиста в оратории И. С. Баха "Страсти по Иоанну" в Цюрихе. После этого дебюта был приглашён на ряд концертов Швейцарии и - после окончания Второй мировой войны - за рубежом. Венгерский дирижёр Ференц Фричай заметил молодого певца и пригласил его участвовать в Зальцбургском фестивале. Мировая карьера Хефлигера началась с исполнения на Зальцбургском фестивале в 1949 году партии Тиресия в "Антигоне" Карла Орфа. В 1952 году Хефлигер последовал за Фричаем в Берлинскую немецкую оперу, где исполнял теноровые партии во всех операх Моцарта, "Севильском цирюльнике" и "Графе Ори" Россини, "Палестрине" Ханса Пфицнера, партию Ганса в "Проданной невесте" Сметаны и другие роли. В 1965 году Хефлигер дебютировал в Бостоне в серии концертов Пибоди Мейсон.

Renaissance polyphony is generally held to be stately, calm, reassuring. But this programme of Palestrina’s six-part Missa sine nomine, complemented by five of his motets and three by Marc'Antonio Ingegneri (c. 1535/36–92), was recorded after the Choir of Girton College, Cambridge, had undertaken a tour of Israel and Palestine. There the music and its texts (‘How can we sing the Lord’s song in a strange land?’) took on an extraordinary poignancy, with the dispossession and desperation of thousands of years ago animating the restrained dignity of Palestrina’s counterpoint with an unexpectedly topical intensity. The Girton College Chapel Choir has gained an impressive reputation as one of the most distinguished mixed-voice choirs at the University of Cambridge. As an international prize-winning ensemble comprising around 26 students, it has built its reputation through regular choral services in Girton College Chapel and frequent performances in parish churches and cathedrals across the UK. Choir members are all undergraduate or graduate students at Cambridge University.

The Verdi Requiem in Memory of the Destruction of Dresden on February 13, 1945 The Requiem concerts of the Dresden Staatskapelle on Dresden Memorial Day maintain a long tradition. It is 68 years now since February 13, 1951, when Rudolf Kempe, at that time General Music Director of the Dresden Staatsoper and Principal Conductor of the Dresden Staatskapelle, conducted the Messa da Requiem by Giuseppe Verdi, the first Requiem to be performed on this day in remembrance of the bombing of Dresden in February 1945, during which many thousands perished within the space of a few hours and large parts of the city were destroyed. The effects of the war were everywhere to be seen in Dresden in 1951; heaps of rubble dominated the city. The presentation of the Verdi Requiem in the Large Auditorium of the Staatstheater - the present-day Schauspielhaus - left a deep impression on those present, who listened in awed silence.

Franz Liszt was 67 when he composed his Via Crucis, yet it did not receive its first performance until 1929, 43 years after the composer’s death. This work of his mature years is in 15 sections, retracing the Stations of the Cross that mark the stages of Christ’s Passion, from being condemned to death to being laid in the tomb. Combining Gregorian chant, the Lutheran liturgy and the Latin, German and Aramaic languages, the Via Crucis shows real formal originality. A devout believer, Liszt gives us here his most important sacred work. He composed several versions: for mixed choir, soloists and organ (with the organ part optionally transcribed for piano), for piano solo, organ solo, and two pianos. After a CD devoted to Janacek, the Collegium Vocale founded by Philippe Herreweghe is once again conducted by Reinbert de Leeuw in this new Alpha recording.

Mazarin managed to sign the Treaty of Paris which validates the future Peace of the Pyrenees, and therefore the marriage of Louis XIV with the Infanta of Spain in 1660. In the context of these celebrations, the French ambassador in Venice commissions a mass from Cavalli, the greatest composer of his time. He thus composed this sumptuous Missa, performed in January 1660 in the Basilica of San Giovanni e Paulo and brought together the best voices and most famous musicians around viols, violins, cornets and trumpets in a spatialisation in the Venetian manner. In this recording, Benjamin Chénier takes on this chef d'oeuvre which celebrates France and Louis XIV with brilliant soloists and a strategy of spatialisation in the Royal Chapel which recreates the splendid sound of 1660
