After more than ten years of making music with turntables, tapes and loops the swiss based musician, artist, performer and architect Christoph Hess started in 1998 the project Strotter Inst. to concentrate just on the manipulation of turntables not using any records or sounds made by someone or something else. The anachronistic machineries have dual roles as objects and as instruments. The first live impact is as installations, then the sounds start to grab the listeners' attention. The auditive level surpasses the visual one. Therefore, the optical comprehension of how the sound is generated plays an important role. Hardly using sounds from LP's - if so, they are cut or scotched - the main source of sound are the prepared pick-ups (i.e. sewing needles or strings instead of the diamond or the extended use of rubber bands). The treatment involves the unclean nature of the sounds as part of the music. Besides the work as a musician, Strotter Inst. is creating sound objects and installations out of turntables. On Line': a collaborative album in parts, focused on themes of repetition, poly-metrics, transformation and abstraction. The record opens with Simo Cell's 'Symmetry': a slow crescendo of whirring pads, melodic percs and dotted rhythms, all underpinned by thick slabs of sub-bass that, with each heavy hit, seem to collapse the track's atmosphere down and in on itself. Next, Don't DJ follows with the oblique, discordant chug of 'Übergang Zur Metrotram'. As with all of Florian's works, the track pulses with an organic, animal quality that completely belies its mechanical origins. Last up, K-LONE clears the air with oniso'. The track grows slowly out of a series of beautiful harmonic counterpoints - morphing patterns that come and go in the mix to reveal their individual colours and contours.

Black and silver cover artwork. 180g vinyl. The multi-channel sound work is the result of a two-week-long artist residency at Lucerne's Südpol in the summer of 2015. Originally briefly available as a small-run cassette release through the Italian Haunter imprint, Just Dead Stars For Dead Eyes has been carefully mastered for a vinyl issue by Room40 founder Lawrence English. During his residency, Savenberg explored the sonic environment of Südpol, doing field recordings around the building or recording pianos and even another resident, an actor whose fragmented and distorted voice can be heard throughout the two parts that make up Just Dead Stars For Dead Eyes. While this particular work does not necessarily explore a theoretical framework like Savenberg's previous releases under his S S S S moniker, it is not to be understood as an experimental piece, but rather an extension of his singular approach to electronic composition.

Night Ranger will release a new, self-produced album, Don’t Let Up, on March 24. “The album is the result of five musicians living and breathing rock ‘n’ roll 24 hours a day,” explains bassist and singer Jack Blades in a press release announcing the record. “Thirty-five years on and Night Ranger is once again ready to let the fans know it’s only rock ‘n’ roll, but I like it.” Don’t Let Up will be made available in standard and deluxe editions. The deluxe edition boasts a bonus track and a DVD featuring band interviews and music videos for the new songs “Running Out of Time” and “Day and Night.” In the meantime, the album’s first single, “Somehow Someway.” has been released to give fans a taste of what to expect. You can listen to it above. Guitarist Brad Gillis describes the new single as “a rockin’ barn-burner up to the standards of our first single, ‘Don’t Tell Me You Love Me.'” (That song appeared on the band’s first album, Dawn Patrol, and reached the Top 40.) He’s enthusiastic about Don’t Let Up’s return to the sonic components that will make them recognizable to fans. “As is typical for NR, we have all the elements that made us popular in the first place,” Gillis says. “[This] includes twin lead vocal trade-offs with Jack and Kelly, and dual guitar harmonies and solos with my new partner in crime, Keri Kelli.” (Guitarist Kelli joined in 2014.)

In the six years since his last album, Christiana, James Mabbett aka Napoleon IIIrd has covered a fair amount of distance, both emotional and literal. The culmination of that journey results in the release of his new album, The Great Lake. A five track exploration of the possibilities of song structures within experimental soundscapes thematically wedded to James’ personal experiences of grief, The Great Lake is paradoxically an album full of human warmth and emotion and a strident piece of abstract art, the collision point between the theory of Basinski and the melody of Northern Soul. The genesis for the album came with James’ move to London from Yorkshire in 2011. Journeying through the centre of the metropolis by bus every day he found solace in immersion in ambient and noise experiments as a travelling soundtrack, recontextualising the chaos and thrum of the city around him into something more surreal and passive. Central to the album is track 4, And the You in Between the Space. Clocking in at 19 minutes and 25 seconds, this three-part piece embodies all the aspects of the album and is a stark example of the bravery of James’ approach to the recording, his desire to challenge both himself and listener. Dropping to almost silence at its midpoint before building to a glorious, joyful climax, the album’s markers of tone, structure, melody, ambience and mood are all displayed within its boundaries;
a rejoinder to those who suggest that contemporary music has nowhere left to travel.

Diario de un Monstruo is a homage to the 1981 album Diary of a Madman by Ozzy Osbourne. It is another (and some might argue, inevitable, addition) to the on-going MONSTER series of releases. To say Liles' recording is a cover version of the original Ozzy album is far too simplistic and misleading. This recording adapts motifs and hooks from the original music but is in no way similar. It is a complex tapestry that is woven from many fine threads and at times is a confusing and incomprehensible MONSTROUS interpretation of the classic album. Anyone expecting a hard rock L.P. will be sorely disappointed. Liles has been obsessed by the original album since its release 36 years ago and has been collecting various L.P. pressings and ephemera associated with Diary of Madman for many years. Ltd to 500 copies, the LP is packaged in a high gloss laminated sleeve and has a printed lined inner.

The lyrics of this album are more autobiographical than of the previous album Cocoon Crash and the music is, when compared to earlier work, more melancholy and intimate. Frontwoman Sarah Bettens gets personal from the start, kicking off the album with a recording of her singing a Belgian folk song at age five. The innocence surrounding it sets the tone. Kraków Loves Adana are a Hamburg based indie band started by Deniz Cicek and Robert Heitmann after meeting in a music club in 2006. The duo creates music that is dreamy and intimate with a delicate and reduced instrumentation. The pair soon started working on their debut album #Beauty' which was released by German indie Labels Clouds Hill &
Snowhite followed by their second LP #Interview'. After touring together and accumulating a fan audience Kraków Loves Adana started self-releasing a series of singles including their self-produced EP #Contrast' and the yearningly, yet mystically piano piece 'Omg I Missed You' early in 2016. Their current release for this year's Autumn was the delightful, melodic guitar driven 'Once In July'.
