Energetic as well as poetic is Karola Obermüllers music, and it reveals hidden and unknown elements underneath the multilayered musical material. Zooming in on musical details is a special feature in several of her pieces as in 'Pulstastung' for example. Here the distances between the musical occurrences are extended more and more, 'with an increasing pulse at the same time' (Karola Obermüller). Obermüller is inspired by ancient poetic texts as from the greek poet Sappho. Here she finds the essences of human existence like light and night, eros and longing. In 'Untergegangen der Mond' and 'silbern.' her music tries 'to create moments of magic' (Volker Blumenthaler in the booklet of the CD). In 'Myrmecia' microtonal shiftings are confronted with percussive making of sound, which are creating a 'strange, crackling, and insisting stream of sound', the composer compares to the wild activity of the primordial ant, the title is derived from.

The great Viennese musical tradition, as represented by Beethoven, Brahms, Bruckner and Mahler, found itself straining the limits of tonality during the first two decades of the 20th century. Schoenberg, Webern and Berg consequently forged a new compositional world, engaging in what they saw as the historically inevitable development of the system of atonality. In contrast, however, Karl Weigl continued to pitch his marvellous music in a more traditional style. Schoenberg wrote in 1938 that 'I always considered Dr. Weigl as one of the best composers of the old school; one of those who continued the glittering Viennese tradition'. This is clearly heard across Weigls entire output - in his symphonies, songs, concertos, string quartets, and the chamber works for piano, cello and violin in various combinations.

The musical language of the New York-based Arnold Rosner (1945–2013) had its roots in the modal harmony and rhythm of pre-Baroque polyphony. It evolved in an array of unusual directions, producing a style that is instantly recognisable and immediately appealing – as can be heard in the three works on this album, all receiving their first recording. Rosner’s Nocturne suggests the immensity – and the implacable violence – of outer space. His overture Tempus Perfectum has its starting point in Renaissance dance. The monumental Sixth Symphony opens with music of volcanic ferocity and vehemence; the central Adagio then provides an island of troubled calm before the dignified opening of the finale presages a symphonic Allegro of wild, freewheeling energy; only when its immense force is spent does this powerful masterpiece sink to an uneasy close. This is the third volume of the Toccata Classics survey of the orchestral music of Arnold Rosner, with more projects in the pipeline

Florence Price was born in Little Rock, Arkansas and studied at the New England Conservatory, but it was in Chicago that her composing career accelerated. The concert in 1933 at which her Symphony No. 1 in E minor was premiered was the first time a major American orchestra had performed a piece written by an African American woman. Influenced by Dvorák and Coleridge-Taylor, she drew on the wellspring of Negro spirituals and vernacular dances, full of lyricism and syncopation. The Symphony No. 4 in D minor demonstrates her tight ensemble writing, her distinct sense of orchestral color, her Ellingtonian ‘jungle style’ language and her penchant for the ‘juba’ dance.
