First performed at the Brussels court during Lent 1706, this second oratorio by Pietro Torri is the oldest to have been given in the capital of the former Spanish Netherlands, and for which a score survives. Sung by the leading artists of the time – the very same who went on to participate in the first performances of the early Handel operas – it played a decisive role in the dissemination of Roman oratorio in northern Europe. Torri, who had a lifelong attachment to the court of the Electors of Bavaria, left behind the most substantial corpus of oratorios – both in French and in Italian – before Handel, whom La Vanità del mondo anticipates by the beauty of its arias and its dramatic power. This recording was performed at Festival International de Musiques Sacrées in Fribourg (Switzerland, 1988) by the prestigious ensemble Musica Antiqua Köln, conducted by Reinhard Goebel, and brilliant soloists

This unique performance of Haydnʼs biblical oratorio Il ritorno di Tobia, which is so rarely heard, is thanks to an unusual gift: the orchestra La Scintilla, which was founded as an 'original sound' ensemble comprising musicians from the Zurich opera orchestra, and which awarded Nikolaus Harnoncourt honorary membership. The honour included the opportunity for Harnoncourt to choose a piece of music which he could then perform with the orchestra in an ideal atmosphere. Harnoncourt surprised everyone by choosing Haydnʼs virtually unknown oratorio based on the apocryphal Bible story of Tobias (Tobit), who goes on an adventurous journey with the angel Raphael in order to heal his blind father with the angelʼs help. In keeping with the spirit of the subject matter, the proceeds of the concert were given to a charity supporting war victims of Sarajevo. The work was performed under Harnoncourtʼs direction with an ideal line-up of soloists (Ann Hallenberg, Valentina Farcas, Mauro Peter, Sen Guo and Ruben Drole) and the magnificent Arnold Schoenberg Choir at a 2013 Salzburg Festival concert in the Felsenreitschule. This Orfeo release of the live recording, which is almost devoid of background noise, is only the third-ever recording to have been made of this very seldom performed Haydn oratorio in the history of phonography. Yet again one is moved to ask why so many of Haydnʼs operas and oratorios are so rarely played. Viewed objectively, Il ritorno di Tobia is in no way inferior to Haydnʼs better-known oratorios, The Creation and The Seasons.

Для одних Шарль Гуно - один из величайших оперных мастеров, для других - создатель "Ave Maria". В связи с тем, что 17 июня исполняется 200 лет со дня рождения великого француза, появилась прекрасная возможность ощутить все многообразие творчества этого мастера, который при жизни был одним из самых известных композиторов родной Франции.

Помимо знаменитых опер, в "Издании Гуно" собрано множество открытий - песни, церковная музыка, месса "Сесилия" и малоизвестная оратория последнего времени "Mors et Vita". Уже "Ave Maria" намекает на это: Гуно с ранних лет хотел стать священником. Став лауреатом Римской премии, он пережил "Вечный город" в религиозном экстазе. Посещение более светских городов - Вены и Лейпцига - привело к крушению его духовных планов. В Париже он отпраздновал триумф операми "Фауст" и "Ромео и Джульетта".

Но строгая инструментальная музыка продолжала оставаться его уделом: среди прочих сочинений он написал две симфонии и "Маленькую симфонию" для духового сонета. Своей монументальной мессой "Цецилия" он создал музыкальный памятник святой музыке.
