It's easy to take Arthur Rubinstein for granted. One of the mightiest pianists of the 20th Century, the Polish-born artist lived for 95 years, debuting in 1894 at age 7, and retiring from the concert stage 82 years later. His playing was infused with a deep connection to the music, a golden singing touch, and a particular, elusive quality that combined gentility, warmth, intimacy, and insouciance. Many pianists today have some and perhaps even all of those qualities, but the Rubinstein blend was a very special je ne sais quoi that seems to belong to artists born in the era that was wiped out by the World Wars. He was a dynamo. At age 64, he played seventeen concertos in a five-concert series in New York that spanned a period of 12 days. But for New York audiences, the most amazing Rubinstein year was 1961, by which time the artist was in his 74. Starting on January 17 that year, and concluding on December 10th, Rubinstein played ten recitals at Carnegie Hall. All were sellouts or near sellouts, tickets in such demand that audience members were also seated on the stage. His reviews were rapturous; his audiences, enraptured. Standing ovations preceded the first note on the program and elicited multiple encores after the last. The Times paid tribute to Rubinstein's feat in an editorial on December 11th: 'Arthur Rubinstein concluded his massive series of ten piano recitals last night in Carnegie Hall. But they were more than piano recitals. They were an attitude toward life - the expression of a civilized man who, in creating and recreating beauty throughout his life, has refused to grow old.'

I am curious where 'Home' will lead me and my music". — Hania Rani Hania Rani is a pianist, composer and musician who, was born in Gdansk and splits her life between Warsaw, where she makes her home, and Berlin where she studied and often works. Her debut album 'Esja', a beguiling collection of solo piano pieces on Gondwana Records was released to international acclaim on April 5th 2019 including nominations in 5 categories in the Polish music industries very own Grammys, the Fryderyki, and winning the Discovery of the Year 2019 in the Empik chain's Bestseller Awards and the prestigious Sanki award for the most interesting new face of Polish music chosen by Polish journalists. Rani also composed the music for her first full length movie "I Never Cry" directed by Piotr Domalewski and for the play "Nora" directed by Michal Zdunik. Her song "Eden" was used as a soundtrack of a short movie by Malgorzata Szumowska for Miu Miu's movie cycle "Women's Tales" If the compositions on Esja were born out of a fascination with the piano as an instrument, then her follow-up, the expansive, cinematic, 'Home', finds Rani expanding her palate: adding vocals and subtle electronics to her music as well as being joined on some tracks by bassist Ziemowit Klimek and drummer Wojtek Warmijak. The album reunites her with recording engineers, Piotr Wieczorek and Ignacy Gruszecki (Monochrom Studio) and the tracks were again mixed again by Gijs van Klooster in his studio in Amsterdam and by Piotr Wieczorek in Warsaw ( Ombelico and Come Back Home). Home was mastered by Zino Mikorey in Berlin (known for his work on albums by artists such as Nils Frahm and Olafur Arnalds). For Rani, 'Home', is very much a continuation of the work she started on 'Esja', "the completion of the sentence" as she puts it. The album offers a metaphorical journey: the story of places that become our home sometimes by chance, sometimes by choice. It is the story of leaving a place that is familiar and the journey that follows it. Home opens with the fragment of the short story "Loneliness" by Bruno Schulz, which can be seen as a parable of a journey that does not necessarily mean going beyond the physical door but can signify going beyond the symbolic limits of our knowledge and imagination. "One can be lost but can find home in his inner part - which can mean many things - soul, imagination, mind, intuition, passion. I strongly believe that when being in uncertain times and living an unstable life we can still reach peace with ourselves and be able to find 'home' anywhere' This is what I would like to express with my music - one can travel the whole world but not see anything. Based on the idea of transferring the sound language of Ambient, Minimal Music and Avant-Pop into an orchestral format, Leipzig-based pianist, composer and sound designer Philipp Rumsch founded his own ensemble in 2015. This ensemble consists of twelve artists from Leipzig, Berlin, Dresden and Weimar. Besides the ensemble, they all work in various musical contexts and environments. Between 2013 and 2020 Philipp Rumsch has studied jazz piano under the aegis of Michael Wollny and Richie Beirach at the Academy of Music and Theatre Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy in Leipzig. In 2016 and 2017 he has refined his sound design and composition capabilities at the Rhythmic Music Conservatory in Copenhagen with, among others Niels-Lyhne Lokkegard and August Rosenbaum. After his last LP reflections (2018), Philipp Rumsch deals on his third Denovali release ŸE: of anxiety x discernment with the subject of anxiety. Based on his own researches, observations and interviews he made, Rumsch develops a multi-dimensional picture of this complex emotional state. Individual experience dissolves in order to explore a collective perception of this phenomena. On ŸE: of anxiety x discernment Philipp Rumsch for the first time uses his self-written texts, but implements also writings by other people, who especially wrote them for the new album. The music of the suite, which consists of two mirror-inverted pieces, adopts dierent shapes. These shapes range between songs, complex compositions and conceptual improvisation. For the recording of ŸE: of anxiety x discernment, Rumsch extended his ensemble by numerous guest artists. The sessions took place at the prestigious Jazzanova Recording Studios in Berlin. In order to achieve an extraordinary listening experience, specialized artificial heads were used to record in binaural stereo. The artwork again has been created in cooperation with Berlin-based Designer Andi Rueckel. ŸE: of anxiety x discernment was mastered by Valgeir Sigurdsson (collaborations with Bjork, Sigur Ros, Ben Frost, Nico Muhly, Hildur Gudnadottir et al.) who already was part of the production process of Philipp Rumschüfs Solo-EP A Forward-Facing Review. In 2018 Philipp Rumsch and his ensemble received the Leipzig award for young jazz musicians, funded by Marion Ermer foundation. The production of ŸE: of anxiety x discernment has been supported by Initiative Musik gGmbH with project funds from the Federal Government Commissioner for Culture and the Media.

Koki Nakano has spent time in the worlds of both classical music and electro-rock (with his band Gas Law). After training at the prestigious Toho Gakuen music school and the Tokyo University of the Arts, he embarked on his career with the strength and serenity of a man who had already ditched all those qualms about identity and heritage that often hobble young musicians. It was back in 2016 that Koki Nakano first came to the attention of those who hunger for the wondrous and unprecedented. The nine pieces on his first album Lift, recorded for No Format! with help from cellist and admirer Vincent Segal, revealed a composer of singular talents. His work displayed a subtle versatility, a high-wire delight in floating above established musical genres. The title of the album evokes a move well-known to ballet dancers: the porté, and conveys the deep relationship, both physical and spiritual, that Koki's music maintains with dance, a bond he's been cultivating ever since he moved to Paris in 2015. Pre-Choreographed is the sequel to that beautiful opening chapter, a new episode in No Format's adventures with the emancipated genii of the piano, which began fifteen years ago with the release of Chilly Gonzales's classic Solo Piano. This project evokes the strong "saudade" for the era when the music and the dance were very close to each other, when they used to function congenially in the society. It also means the state of the music such as "awaiting" or even "missing" the choreography. That is to say, the character of the music is yet very "raw", no direction is given. Koki Nakano's basic intention resides in the urge to re-transcribe the intimate topography of a man's life, whilst remaining deliberately detached from fashions, slogans, from a binary vision of the history of music in which modernity and past, avant-garde and classicism, new and old stand in opposition to each other as a matter of principle. For that reason, his creations never emit the dusty odour of schools and lecture halls, or the perfumed incense of chapels.

Black Sarabande expands upon pianist-composer Robert Haigh's beguiling debut for Unseen Worlds with a collection of intimate and evocative piano-led compositions. Haigh was born and raised in the 'pit village' of Worsbrough in South Yorkshire, England. His father, as most of his friends' fathers, was a miner, who worked at the local colliery. Etched into Haigh's work are formative memories of the early morning sounds of coal wagons being shunted on the tracks, distant trains passing, and walking rural paths skirting the barren industrial landscape. The album opens with the title track - a spacious, plaintive piano motif develops through a series of discordant variations before resolving. On 'Stranger On The Lake,' sweeping textures and found sounds lay the foundation for a two chord piano phrase evoking a sense of elegy. 'Wire Horses' is an atmospheric audio painting of open spaces and distant lights. 'Air Madeleine' uses variations in tempo and dynamics to craft the most seductively melodic track on the album. 'Arc Of Crows' improvises on a single major seventh chord, splintering droplets of notes as ghostly wisps of melodic sound slowly glide into view. 'Ghosts Of Blacker Dyke' is a melancholic evocation of Haigh's roots in England's industrial north - intermingling dissonant sounds of industry within a set of languid piano variations. 'Progressive Music' is constructed around a series of lightly dissonant arpeggiated piano chords which modulate through major and minor key changes before resolving at a wistful and enigmatic refrain. In 'The Secret Life of Air', a nocturnal, low piano line slowly weaves its way through the close-miked ambience of the room, nearly halting as each note is allowed to form and reverberate into a blur with the next. The ambitious 'Painted Serpent' calmly begins with drone-like pads and builds with the introduction of counterpoint piano lines and an orchestral collage of sound underpinned by a deliberate bass motif. 'Broken Symmetry' and 'Lady Lazarus' highlight Haigh's gift for blurring the line between dissonance and harmony - opaque piano portraits of moonlight and shadows glancingly evoke the impressionistic palettes of Harold Budd, Debussy and Satie

Two leaders from very different musical worlds, the innovative pianist Bruce Brubaker and scientist-now-electronic-artist Max Cooper collaborate to create this latest expression of music by Philip Glass and tell a story of diversity and vulnerability. Commissioned by and introduced at the Paris Philharmonie in 2019, Glassforms melds the acoustic concert grand piano with synths and cutting-edge electronic production techniques to create a compelling album and a dynamic live experience. Rather than just reworking or augmenting via traditional means, Max Cooper and Bruce Brubaker fundamentally rewire Glass’ forms in a manner that’s not possible with human composition tools. Max built a new system for musical expression through coding with software developer Alexander Randon, creating a tool for taking live data from the piano and transforming it into new but intimately related forms which drive his synths on stage. The result is that each of the pieces by Glass becomes its own electronic “instrument,” an instrument Bruce plays in addition to, and simultaneously with the original piece. As Bruce plays the piano and controls synths with his playing, Max modulates and augments, sometimes adding his own melodies to form hybrid variants.
