Ascanio is the student of Benvenuto Cellini, a legendary Florentine sculptor. This latter character’s genius and romances came to know a great operatic destiny. The name Ascanio is also the title of a grand lyrical drama by Camille Saint-Saëns which premiered in 1890, and is based on Paul Meurice’s play. The opera was abridged several times and reassembled despite the composer’s strong objections. It is a wonderful work, far too little-known, in which Italian lyricism, Wagnerian influence and French elegance combine. For the very first time, we will be able to hear the complete premiere performance of the version abiding by the 1888 autograph manuscript. It is brought to us by the impassioned conductor, Guillaume Tourniaire, and a top-flight, French-speaking cast. They are accompanied by the Orchestra and Choirs from the Grand Théâtre de Genève and the Haute École de Musique. All this has been meticulously and enthusiastically recorded by B Records.

One of the very few recordings opera star Cecilia Bartoli made for Warner Classics’ former labels Teldec & Erato, apart from three Mozart operas (Cosi fan tutte and Le nozze di Figaro with Daniel Barenboim and the rare Lucio Silla with Harnoncourt). The terrific cast also features the great tenor Christoph Prégardien and famous French soprano Patricia Petibon. The Austrian conductor Nikolaus Harnoncourt was both a specialist of Classical era and a master of opera performances. In the early 1950s, Harnoncourt founded Concentus Musicus Wien, the first professional orchestra in Europe to play on period instruments and dedicated to music of the pre-Romantic era. As Sir Nicholas Kenyon wrote in Gramophone after Harnoncourt’s death: “He wanted to explore why composers made their music sound as it did, to understand what their intentions were, to react to the instruments they used and to their sonorities, and to see how they could best be created anew in our time. He did not believe in ‘authenticity’ as such, and never used the word. Instead he questioned ‘tradition’ as laziness [as] Mahler had before him."

Для одних Шарль Гуно - один из величайших оперных мастеров, для других - создатель "Ave Maria". В связи с тем, что 17 июня исполняется 200 лет со дня рождения великого француза, появилась прекрасная возможность ощутить все многообразие творчества этого мастера, который при жизни был одним из самых известных композиторов родной Франции.

Помимо знаменитых опер, в "Издании Гуно" собрано множество открытий - песни, церковная музыка, месса "Сесилия" и малоизвестная оратория последнего времени "Mors et Vita". Уже "Ave Maria" намекает на это: Гуно с ранних лет хотел стать священником. Став лауреатом Римской премии, он пережил "Вечный город" в религиозном экстазе. Посещение более светских городов - Вены и Лейпцига - привело к крушению его духовных планов. В Париже он отпраздновал триумф операми "Фауст" и "Ромео и Джульетта".

Но строгая инструментальная музыка продолжала оставаться его уделом: среди прочих сочинений он написал две симфонии и "Маленькую симфонию" для духового сонета. Своей монументальной мессой "Цецилия" он создал музыкальный памятник святой музыке.
