A symbolist drama on a supernatural theme, it is steeped in beauty, mystery and foreboding, and orchestrated with the Romantic opulence familiar from his sumptuous trilogy of Roman tonepoems. Its triumph at the New York Metropolitan Opera in 1928 was repeated at La Scala, Milan, and this most recent production at the Teatro Lirico di Cagliari, worldrenowned for its staging of rarities, was hailed for its ‘brilliant production’ and magnificent performances.

3 July 1951 Mexico, Palacio de Bellas Artes Aida held an important place in the earlier years of Callas’s career, and in 1950 it brought her debut at La Scala, Milan, the theatre where she soon became reigning diva. That same year, she sang the role of the Ethiopian princess in Mexico City, arousing near-hysteria among the audience (and anger in the competitive tenor singing Radamès) by interpolating a stupendous top E flat at the end of the Triumphal Scene, which closes Act II of the opera. She repeated the feat on her return to Mexico the following year, when this live recording was made. This time, the Radamès was the celebrated, heroic-voiced Italian, Mario del Monaco, while the Mexican mezzo-soprano Oralia Domínguez made an opulent Amneris and Giuseppe Taddei, one of the leading Italian baritones of his time, sang a powerful Amonasro.

Prokofiev composed his adaptation of Tolstoy’s mighty War and Peace during World War II. In 1986, as the Cold War entered its final phase, the exiled Mstislav Rostropovich conducted this superb recording of the opera with his wife, Galina Vishnevskaya, in the central role of Natalya Rostova. Rostropovich had been Prokofiev’s student and knew him well. “At the end of his life,” he wrote, “Prokofiev was obsessed with the hope that one day his greatest masterpiece, War and Peace, would triumph in its definitive form … Now I fervently hope that this recording will satisfy my old friend.”
