Although we know of at least five concertos J.S. Bach wrote for solo organ we have no surviving Bach organ concertos with orchestral accompaniment. Contrast this with the 200+ cantatas: of these, 18 feature organ obbligato, which Bach uses as a solo instrument in arias, choral sections and sinfonias. The most obviously conspicuous date to 1726. In May to November of that year, Bach composed six cantatas which assign a prominent solo role to the organ. Most of these are reworkings of movements of lost violin and oboe concertos written in Bach’s time at Weimar and Köthen. Why Bach wrote such a number of obbligato organ cantatas in such a short period remains unknown. One possible explanation may lie in Dresden, where Bach had given a concert on the new Silbermann organ in the Sophienkirche in 1725. Some scholars think that, in addition to other organ works, he also performed organ concertos, or at least a few earlier versions of the sinfonias, with obbligato organ and strings in order to show off the organ. From the cantatas mentioned above, along with the related violin and harpsichord concertos, it is perfectly possible to reconstruct a number of three-movement organ concertos of this type. By using this method, we hope to bring some of the music which Bach may have performed in Dresden in 1725 back to life on this CD.

According to Joachim Kaiser in his book 'Grosse Pianisten unserer Zeit' (great pianists of our time), there is 'among all the pianists in the whole world not one who takes such pains to perform for the sheer beauty of the music as Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli'. The career of ABM, as he was known, was frequently interrupted due to ill health and can best be documented through his public performances, which also form the nucleus of this compilation. Critics described his reading of Brahms' Paganini Variations and the Bach Chaconne arranged by Busoni as 'exemplary' and said that Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli (1920-1995) had 'set new benchmarks' with his recordings of Debussy, Ravel and Rachmaninov. In their book 'Pianistenprofile', a handbook of 600 pianists' biographies published by Barenreiter, lngo Harden and Gregor Willmes describe ABM's Scarlatti Sonatas as exhibiting 'flawless, hitherto unsurpassed tonal perfection and harmony'

As an instrument, the bassoon has had a remarkable history. Beginning with its Renaissance ancestry as the dulcian, it developed during the Baroque period into an almost indispensable part of the ensemble. Antonio Vivaldi recognized the versatility of the bassoon early on, composing no fewer than 39 concertos for it. But it was in the second half of the century that the bassoon achieved an equal prominence with the other woodwinds. The four delightful works on this disc, performed by Jaakko Luoma and the Tapiola Sinfonietta, represent different facets of the Classical period solo repertoire, each of which makes considerable demands on the instrument.

On this new recording, Karol Szymanowski‘s Violin Concerto, played by Finnish violin virtuoso Elina Vähälä, is paired with the impressive Lyric Symphony of Austrian composer and conductor Alexander von Zemlinsky that builds a bridge between lyric poetry and the grand orchestral symphonies. The excellent soloists of this recording are Johanna Winkel, soprano, and Michael Nagy, baritone. Recorded at the NOSPR Concert Hall, 2017.

Fire Ritual, the concerto that lends its name to the present disc, was composed with Hemsing in mind. With it Tan Dun has created a musical ceremony for the victims of war, building on four themes: Cruel Wars, Innocent People, Mantras of the Heavenly Birds and Eternity. The concerto was premièred in September 2018 by Hemsing and the Oslo Philharmonic, conducted by the composer. For Eldbjørg Hemsing, Tan Dun has also created the concerto that opens the disc, Rhapsody and Fantasia, based on earlier works. Both works reflect the composer’s memories of growing up barefoot in the countryside, and his later experiences of bringing together the shamanistic and spiritual world of his childhood with the discipline and philosophy of Peking Opera. Or in the composers own words: ‘a reflection of those early memories of my youth, but through the lens of my current musical soundscape’.

Концерт для виолончели, созданный двумя годами ранее, но никогда не записанный, был посвящен солисту этой записи: одному из самых ярких французских виолончелистов современности - Henri Demarquette. Микко Франк и престижный Филармонический оркестр Радио Франции также способствуют успеху этой записи.
