André Navarra (1911–1988), together with Pierre Fournier and Maurice Gendron, was acknowledged as one of the “three great” French cellists who left their mark on the European concert life of their era. He was born in Biarritz, won first prizes at the age of 13 and 16, and gained early practical experience in chamber-music ensembles before celebrating his solo debut in 1931 with the Concerts Colonne. After a stupendous competition win in 1937 in Vienna he began an international career that was to last for more than three decades. In parallel, Navarra began teaching: starting in 1949 (until 1979) he was professor at the Paris Conservatoire; from 1953 he also taught at the Accademia in Siena and at the Vienna College of Music, and from 1958 to 1986 he was a member of the illustrious teaching team at the Nordwestdeutsche Musikakademie in Detmold, where his colleague on violin Tibor Varga taught. He can be heard playing with Varga on this 10-CD collection as well as on numerous studio and live recordings made at various times along the way of his remarkable career. (transl. JMBerridge)

Shortly after taking up the position of Thomaskantor in Leipzig in 1723, Bach wrote a Magnificat in E flat major for performance at Christmas. Around a decade later he revised the work, transposing it down to D major and making it more concise. Utilising a Biblical text, the piece is suffused with a series of memorable arias and choruses and orchestrated with spectacular grandeur. Lumen is a contemporary musical dialogue that urges empathy between the three Abrahamic religions. Translating the oratorio form into a ‘unity of diversity’, Robert M. Helmschrott has converted the poetry of the Old and New Testaments, the Torah and Qur’an into an interfaith ‘language of sounds and singing’.

Bach and Gabrielli: the focus of this recording is an unusual musical match involving the famous 6 Suites for violoncello solo by Johann Sebastian Bach and the little-known 7 Ricercari for violoncello solo (1689) by Domenico Gabrielli of Bologna, the first example of a work for unaccompanied cello in history, and thus the only precedent and possible model for the Bach masterpiece. In what ways are the two series of compositions linked? Cellist Mauro Valli is convinced that there is a connection between the two for a number of reasons, including the preponderant correspondence of the keys. Bach assiduously performed and transcribed works by Italian composers, not only those of his contemporaries but also of earlier musicians, so it is highly likely that he was familiar with Gabrielli’s works, in particular with the Ricercari. Mauro Valli provides an intriguingly new interpretation of Bach’s six masterpieces by heralding each one with the corresponding Ricercare. The outcome is strikingly fresh and original, with a wealth of courageously personal diminutions and embellishments that derive from Valli’s deep knowledge of the Italian baroque repertoire. Bach was fascinated by composers such as Frescobaldi, Albinoni and Vivaldi, and it certainly makes good sense to perform his Suites in the Italian style!

Johann Sebastian Bach has always been considered one of the greatest music transcribers of all times. Many of his transcriptions (mostly the ones from Italian composers Vivaldi and Marcello) have become instant classics, and they are still viewed as masterpieces of the baroque repertoire. Bach has always been very active as a transcriber of his own music too. His masterful transcription of his Sonata for viola da gamba and keyboard no.1, which he transformed into a trio for two flutes and continuo, has given the inspiration for this CD project. Tripla Concordia and Walter van Hauwe decided to transcribe even the other two Gamba Sonatas as Trio Sonatas, walking in Bach footsteps. In doing so, the members of the ensemble actually fulfilled their desire of offering a new listening experience of this set of sonatas, with fresh colours and textures. Tripla Concordia sincerely hopes that those new versions will cast a new light on these works, thus giving the listener the opportunity of discovering new details and fresh instrumental combinations. Transcriptions of other two Bach masterpieces, the Organ Sonata no.3 (transcription by Sour Cream) and the Partita for Lute BWV 997, complete the recording.

We are indeed fortunate that Fritz Kreisler was still at the peak of his powers when electrical recording arrived in 1925. He was as busy as ever in the year covered by these recordings, using Vuillaume and Guarneri del Gesù violins that he said ‘breathe and pulsate with a million vibrations’. On one of his many successful charity concerts in 1927 The Times commented that Kreisler’s ‘fine-drawn phrases have the delicacy of a spider’s thread, the suppleness of elastic, and the strength of steel’. With wonderful examples of parlando bowing, many demonstrations of beautiful double-stopping, lovely staccato and myriad other subtleties such as delicate rhythmic changes, harmonics and variations in dynamics, these New York and Berlin sessions include classic versions of Kreisler’s best works and a rare unaccompanied movement by Bach
